    In this paper, we examine the determinants of subjective social status. This topic used to be discussed extensively in the U.S., although few consider the present state of social status. We focus on the sequence of temporal change in Japan in comparison with that in the U.S. Thus, we apply a multigroup MIMIC model to the longitudinal dataset from both societies. We feature subjective social status as the dependent variable. This is measured as a latent concept by three indicators: class identification, self-ranked social position, and satisfaction with standard of living. As independent variables, we examine the general aspects of objective social status: education, occupation, and household income. Significance tests of the model fit indicate that objective social status gradually gains influence to subjective social status in Japan, while the determinant structure is almost equally maintained in the U.S. Expanding class awareness observed in Japan calls for researchers to pay attention to future consequences not only in the U.S., but also other countries.

    It is frequently said that the degree of <i>familial differentiation of schooling</i> has expanded in recent years. In contrast with the stratification studies that originally covered this issue, recent works have put more stress on economic problems.<br>Therefore, we need to focus on the educational attainment of mothers that particularly reflects the viewpoint of family sociology: parenting, female gender, the occupational environment of married women, familial cultural capital, and so on.<br>The current situation is one where the tertiary education attendance ratio of middle-age females has risen as high as forty percent. Taking this ratio into account, the education of mothers may be dichotomizing their educational strategies.

    Stratification study in Japan seems to be activated journalistically these years. Nevertheless, specialists also point out the complicated tasks of this research field. This paper reviews the footsteps of the study, which has developed in consonance with the SSM (Social Stratification and Social Mobility) Survey in Japan since 1955. Then I point out that comparing the period of industrialization after WW II, recent two decades as research objects remain not fully explained. This seems to form a background that Hara and Seiyama (1999) proposed the studies of 'inequalities in the affluent society' as a basic perspective of contemporary stratification study in Japan. However, their ideas are still involved with the anachronistic understanding "After the War." Thus, the traditional frameworks are sustained in the longitudinal comparative analyses, and not very new conclusions are repeated without enough explanation of the current reality of these two decades. On the other hand, the delicate class differences in the affluent society, on which they stressed, reveal to the younger sociologists that the importance of the stratification study to the broader social aspect gradually diminished.

    Cultural reproduction theory, which was suggested by P. Bourdieu and J-C. Passeron (1970), S. Bowles and H. Gintis (1976) or B. Bernstein (1971) has been imported to Japan for more than twenty years. Studies of social mobility are inevitably related to it. However there are not so many empirical studies discussing the relationship between these two fields. This paper examines the validity and the extent of cultural reproduction theory in relation to the status attainment process in contemporary Japan.<br> H. Fujita, T. Miyajima and their colleagues conducted two surveys in order to replicate Bourdieu and Passeron's work in Japan. They invented some Japanese original variables to measure cultural capital. One of them is a vocabulary test as an index of linguistic ability. We also applied it to our own research on 1990s' Japanese junior high and high school students and their parents (686 families). The research design allows me to analyze the relationship between social class and linguistic ability of adult men (fathers) , and the relationships among that of students and their parents.<br> The conclusions are the following. Social class does have a meaningful effect on parental linguistic ability. However, there are significant but small magnitude of parent-child relationships of linguistic abilities. Then there is no longer a significant relationship between social class and students' linguistic ability. These conclusions indicate that it is not appropriate to apply cultural reproduction theory to all Japanese social strata. This also implies that the effect of school education will be more important than that of cultural capital when we explain status attainment process in contemporary Japan.

    This empirical study discusses the democratization of social consciousness in post-war Japan and the function of school education in this process. For the measurement of democratic consciousness, we use the scale of authoritarian conservatism, which has been used in many previous studies in this field. It is a well-known fact that educational career and age have effects on authoritarian conservatism. Besides, the more complex relationship between school education and authoritarian conservatism has already been confirmed, namely two opposite aspects of school education, which reduce authoritarian conservatism and form it according to the educational conditions in school. Reasoning from these facts, it can be presumed that the relationship between age and authoritarian conservatism just represents the qualitative difference of school education between generations. Making a comparison between the old system and the new one, we can properly evaluate the function of school education to democratize social consciousness in post-war Japan. We use the data of the 1985 Social Stratification and Social Mobility Survey (SSM) and conjecture the effects of school education. After dividing all samples into three groups, the first group being people educated only under the old system, the second, under both systems, and the third, only under the new system, we apply the same multiple regression model to each group. The independent variables analyzed are educational career, occupational prestige score, and age, and authoritarian conservatism score is a dependent variable. The result indicates that 1) the relationship between age and authoritarian conservatism is caused by the difference in educational systems. Especially, age has little direct effect on the democratization of social consciousness in post-war generations. 2) The magnitude of the democratizing function of the post-war educationl system is about 1.8 times as large as the pre-war one. 3) The function of democratization of social consciousness by school education has been maintained for 25 years in post-war Japan.

  • Educational Conditions in School and Formation of Social Attitudes Reviewed

    This empirical study of the formation of social attitudes during junior high and high school is based on data gathered in 1992 through the use of a self-administered questionnaire filled out by about 700 Japanese students and their parents.<BR>The paper focuses on authoritarian conservatism and general life satisfaction as separate facets of the different ways of thinking that typify the various social strata. The status attainment model served as the basic model. The variables, some of which were based on structural equation measurement models, were arranged in the following causal ordering : 1) social background i.e., father's education and occupational status, 2) socialization factors i.e., parents' social attitudes, number of family members, 3) ascription i.e., ability in school, age or grade and 4) educational conditions in school i.e., substantive complexity of schoolwork, closeness of supervision by teachers and routinization of work. 5) authoritarian conservatism or general life satisfaction.<BR>The results indicated that 1) there are significant, but not particularly powerful, causal connections between parents' and children's levels of authoritarian conservatism and general life satisfaction. 2) The fact that the social background variables have little significant effect on these two variables suggests that social reproduction theories such as the Bourdieu's, or Bowles and Gintis do not apply to contemporary Japan. 3) Despite Parsonian thesis of socialization into the nuclear family, educational conditions mainly form student's authoritarian conservatism and general life satisfaction in contemporary Japan.

    M. Kohn and his colleague have been analyzing complicated relationships between work and personality for more than twenty years. He insists that "the essence of higher class position is that one's decisions and actions can be consequential; the essence of lower class position is that one is at the mercy of forces and people beyond one's control, often beyond one's understanding." Higher class position means relatively higher occupational self-direction and promotes self-directedness of personality; on the other hand, the lower class position's occupational conditions force people to conform to external authority.<br> In this paper, I re-examine part of the studies, "Work and Personality", using Japanese men's data which was collected in 1979. I focus on three different components of self-directed personality, 1 ) authoritarian conservatism, 2 ) idea-conformity and 3 ) self-esteem. Then I re-confirm significant relationships between social stratificaion and these three attitudes. In order to examine direct causalities of related social factors, I introduce social background variables, which have been ignored or treated as control variables in almost all previous studies; father's occupational prestige and education, urbanness of respondent's hometown, age and education of respondent. Then the coefficient between social stratification and attitudes is divided into direct or indirect causes as follows;<br> 1 ) Respondent's education and aging have effects on their ideational flexibility. By these effects, high education reduces authoritarian conservatism, while aged people tend to be more authoritarian.<br> 2 ) Urbanness of one's hometown directly influences idea-conformity, but social stratification does not have a significant direct effect on idea-conformity.<br> 3 ) Occupational prestige of present job and aging have positive direct effects on self-esteem.<br> These findings match S. Lipset's discussion about blue-collar workers' authoritarianism. And they also suggest important hypotheses about the relationships between personality and social structural factors in Japan.

    本年は初年度であり、3つの研究フィールドと実験フィールドのそれぞれでグループを組織して研究課題を具体化した。
    流動化社会のまちづくりの研究グループは、フィールドとしてＧＶ（大阪大学グローバルビレッジ津雲台）と咲洲において、＜分断＞の克服のために不可欠なコミュニケーションの活性化を実験的に行った。対象フィールドでWebアプリである「災害救援マップ」を用いたまち歩きを行い、防災訓練を兼ねるとともにその効果を測定する質問紙調査を試行した。
    都市と地方の分断の超克の研究グループは、都市部からの地域への人の流入は関係人口の増大の動きとしてとらえる。西予市野村地域をフィールドに、「がいなんよ大学 in のむら」という講演会を中心とするイベントを4回行い、従来の人文学・社会科学的な方法を用いて地域内外の対立をなくし、コミュニケーションを増大させる試みを行った。また、地方にとっては不可避な高校生の地域移動をキャリアの観点から調査するとともに、都市に移動した大学生が出身地域と関わり続けられる仕組みを野村地域で試行した。
    災害グループは、だれ一人取り残さないインクルーシブを前提に「助かる」という概念を理論的枠組みとして、特徴のある分断が発生した東北、福島などの被災地を継続して訪問した。また能登半島の被災地を訪問し、災害復興の支援を行った。
    移民グループは移民やエスニック・マイノリティの多い大阪府生野地域における多様な担い手による実践に焦点をあてている。大阪生野は日本人も在日韓国人一世も減少しており、ベトナム人をはじめ、中国、ネパール、ミャンマーの人などが増加傾向にある。エスニシティだけでなく、在留資格も多様であり、小さな子供たちも増えている。このような従来とは異なる状況で、人々の地域への愛着や教育のアクターによるコミュニティの関係のつなぎ直しについて、研究を進めている。

    本プロジェクトでは、先行して2021年３月に、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大に関するオンライン調査を実施していた。この調査での回答者をベースにして、2021年7月、2021年11月、そして2022年3月にオンラインパネル調査を実施した。同一の回答者について、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大期における意識・行動の変化を追いかけるデータを蓄積したことで、新型コロナウィルス感染拡大が社会に対してどのような影響を及ぼしたのかが分析可能になった。特に注目されるのは、2021年7月は東京オリンピック2020が開催された時期に相当し、さらにこの時期にデルタ株による新型コロナウィルス感染拡大が進んだことと、2021年11月は新型コロナウィルスワクチンの接種が進み、一時的に新型コロナウィルス感染が収束していたことである。新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大が一気に進んだ時期と、新型コロナウィルスが一時的に収束した時期の双方を含むパネル調査データは、新型コロナウィルスの影響を明らかにするうえで貴重なデータとなっている。
    2021年度は、調査の実施に加えて、すでに2020年度に実施されていたもう一つのオンラインパネル調査のデータを分析する作業をおこなった。データ分析を通じて、新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大が人びとの経済状況、主観的ウェルビーイング、そしてメンタルヘルスに与えた影響が明らかになった。本プロジェクトでは、分析の結果を日本社会学会大会で報告し、その成果を２本の英語論文にまとめた。ひとつは『理論と方法』に特集論文として掲載され、もうひとつはSSM-Population Healthに研究論文として掲載された。なお、分析の結果は、本プロジェクトが立てた仮説「新型コロナウィルスの感染拡大は、人びとの生活に対して負の影響をもたらし、その影響の大きさには社会格差が存在する」を支持するものとなっている。

    This project aimed to discuss and examine how the social stratification structure in Japan, the most aged society in the world, is based on the empirical analyses of the 7th National Survey of Social Stratification and Mobility (SSM survey), 2015. First, the intergenerational social mobility trend has been stable for the last 60 years, and there is no clear evidence that the inequality in educational opportunities has expanded. Alternatively, we also confirmed social changes. For instance, the extent of homogamy in class origin between wife and husband has reduced, and the relative advantages enjoyed by white-collar workers in long-term employment of white-collar workers and the effect of college degree and beyond on managerial status have declined since the 1980s. Further, in determining the social status of the elderly, the effect of work histories during their working-age period has not declined.

    SSP2015, Stratification and Social Psychology Survey in 2015, is a nation-wide survey carried out by us. The project named SSP consists of the members and the collaborators of this grant-aid research. We prepared the data properly at first, then we shared them within the project. After we held research meetings based on data analyses, we provided the outcome to public. We held symposiums and an international workshop. Also, we made presentations in academic meetings. We presented more than 50 of academic papers based on these work. All in all, we pursued to make wide outreach of the survey research data. These efforts promote people’s understanding of contemporary Japanese society.

    This study examined the survey paradata, which mainly means data about the survey process obtained in the administration of surveys, for the purpose of improving the quality of survey operation by using this information. We also discussed the methods for evaluating nonreseponse bias which could be caused by low response rates, and methods for adjusting for the bias. Survey modes included in this study were traditional face-to-face interviewing with paper questionnaire, self-administered questionnaire, telephone interview by RDD, Web surveys and on-site smart-card record of visitor's behavior. By analyzing the visit record in interviewer-mediated surveys and call record of RDD surveys, we can understand the interviewer behavior more precisely and we can make use of these findings in interviewer training. By analyzing paradata such as response time in CAPI survey or Web survey, we can deepen our understandings on the respondent behavior.

    We empirically compared Computer-Assisted Self-administered Interview (CASI) based on deliberation within himself/herself with Mini-Publics (MP) based on deliberation with other people, CASI is preferable because it guarantees representativeness of sample better and costs less. However, this research project also found that deliberation within himself/herself was not as effective as deliberation with other people in some aspects of attitudes. For example, when a respondent wrongly believed incorrect information to be true, only deliberation with other people can correct his/her wrong concept. Therefore, we now know that each of CASI and MP has its own merit, and it would be premature to conclude that one method is better than the other.

    Face to face interview method in the social research field has been remarkably developed in Japan. The principal method was interview surveys with paper and pencil. Taking into account the current development of information technology, we newly established the computer assisted personal interview (CAPI) method with paired tablet computers. We paid special attention to maintain comparability with former social research method when we designed the system. In consequence, we could design a new method and research sequence with which we actually pursue interview surveys. All of these enable us to collect the information about the merits and problems of the new social research method.

    The most important achievement of this project was that the National Survey of Social Stratification and Social Mobility (hereafter, SSM survey) was successfully conducted in 2015. Besides, empirical studies with this data were conducted on the structure of social stratification in contemporary Japan considering demographic transformation, that is, fertility decline and aging population. The SSM survey has been conducted every 10 years since 1955, and this was the seventh, wherein the upper limit of the age of respondents was increased from 69 to 79 and a new questionnaire was included about leaving the parental home, social status of the spouse at the first marriage, and the educational attainment of the respondents’child(ren). Based on the 2015 SSM data, the ground realities in the structure of social stratification and the mechanism involved in the emergence of social inequality were identified considering the rapid transformation in the demographic structure and in the family in Japanese society.

    In this study, we have longitudinally examined accumulated social survey data from Japan since 1980s. In addition, we pursued five preliminary social surveys and experiments, so that we could grasp the current socio-economic reality, which was called mass-inequality society. At the same time, we developed a CAPI (computer assisited personal interviewing) social survey method and introduce it to the 1st Stratification and Social Psychology survey in 2015, which is one of the latest nationwide social surveys. We are currently in the process of detailed analysis, though we have immediately reported the descriptive outcome of the survey.

    We conducted a nationwide survey named "Survey of Education, Social Stratification, and Social Mobility in Japan, 2013"(an abbreviated name of the survey is ESSM2013), which contained many school or education variables. These variables were inclined to be not contained in sociological nationwide survey so far. The response rate of this survey was 60.3%, which was higher than many recent similar surveys in Japan. By the survey data, we were able to analyze effects of educational experiences to social status and effects of social origin to educational experiences more exactly than before.

    年度当初の計画に従い、この先5年間の研究を遂行すべく、研究代表者である大阪大学・人間科学研究科・准教授吉川徹と、研究分担者である東北大学・文学研究科・准教授浜田宏、統計数理研究所・データ科学研究系・准教授前田忠彦の3名により、入念な研究計画の打ち合わせを行なった。ここでは、事務補佐員および研究員の雇用による研究計画全体の統括、実験設備の設置、大規模調査の実施などの細かいスケジュールを決定した。
    続いて、分担者の所属先である東北大学と統計数理研究所に研究経費を配分する手続きを進めた。加えて、研究代表者である吉川徹は慶応義塾大学・文学研究科鹿又伸夫教授、早稲田大学・文学研究科・木村好美准教授との共同研究論文作成のための打ち合わせを行った。これは7月の研究会、12月の共著論文の執筆の道筋をつけるものとなった。
    この間に大阪大学では特任研究員および事務補佐員の採用の手続きを進め、人間科学研究科社会環境学講座内に階層意識研究拠点を立ち上げた。本年度の研究計画においては、2010年に収集した「格差と社会意識についての全国調査」の回収データを整理し、分析可能な状態に整形して、研究メンバーに配布し、基礎分析を行うことが予定されていた。そのため調査データのチェック作業などの活動に入ろうとしたところ、5月31日に科学研究費補助金基盤研究(S)「現代日本における階層意識と格差の連関変動過程の実証的解明」(23223002研究代表者:吉川徹)の交付内定の連絡があり、本研究を廃止することとなった。実質的にはこの2ヶ月という期間には研究実績を出すことはできていないが、上記の活動により、年度途中から開始された基盤研究(S)の研究をきわめてスムーズに開始することができた。

    Examining the long term comparable follow up survey data in post-industrial phase, this study clarifies the similarities and differences in Japanese and the US societies. Japan spent an era of stability from the beginning of 80s' to the middle of 00s with respect to family, occupational and other social structures. We confirmed that the main determinant of the changes in social psychology was basically one's aging during this period in Japan. This reflects the fundamental stability of psychological functioning of Japanese people. In spite of the fact, remarkable transformations in value orientations and public opinions were also observed.

    In this survey project, we pursued a long-term panel survey which had more than twenty-five years of interval. The purpose of it was to analyze the relationship between macro social change and individual lifecourse in recent Japanese society. Moreover, we have collaborated with the US counterpart conducted the equivalent survey project, so that we could comparatively analyze the data from the United States and Japan. This enabled us to sort out the similarity and differences of these two societies.
    Our practice also proofed that with an appropriate research design, it was possible to carry out such a long-term follow up survey.
    The data told us that the employees worked from 60s to 80s in the United States and those worked from 80s to now-a-days in Japan have similar traits in the influence of job conditions to their values and attitudes. In other words, we could find the similarity of social function in these industrialized societies. At the same time, we found US-Japan differences which are based on the cultural and historical differences. Our conclusion is that there exist cultural differences as well as fundamental similarity of the industrial structure of the societies.
    We could obtain valuable data of lifecouse value change along with individual's changes of life condition as well as macro social change.

    We investigated the choice of cources, the social consciousness and consciousness-of-daily-life of the Machino High School students, and compared the result with the data of the survey in 1992 and the nationwide survey in 2002. According to the investigation, we found the improvement of students' relationship with the school and the rise of students' self-esteem. Moreover, it turned out that while Machino High School students' daily-life behavior and consciousness out of the school is a little different from the average of the nationwide data, there is not a significant difference in school-adaptation and occupational consciousness.
    We carried out the opinion poll about the educational system reform of high schools in Wajima City and Matto City in Ishikawa Prefecture. In Wajima City, we carried out random sampling of the 400 (20-75 years old men and wemen), and delivered and collected the questionnaires by the mail (237 valid responses and the valid response rate was 59.3%). The result of data analysis is as follows : (1) There are large differences between the two cities in the cognition of the gap of an educational opportunity, and the number of people who "feel" the differences is more by 23.7 point in the Wajima city, (2) How much people desire that an the university-preparatory school at an equivalent level will be located in every region is deferent by cities, and those who answer "it is very important" is more in number by 10 point in Wajima City, (3) On the other hand, about the opinion "that we avoid closing a school even if a special fiscal burden is necessary", it turned out that there was a little more "strongly opposite" people in Wajima City.
    We analyzed 30 years of statistics about the graduate junior high school ratio of the high school new students and the course after the graduation from the high school, and showed that (1) the high school could not fully attract the graduate person of the local community concerned, or it could not show the presence as a local high school (2) even at Machino High School, which is not a so-called university-preparatory school, after the 1990s, the ratio of advancement to institutions of higher education after graduation was rising (we can call this fact "the realization of a mature credentialism society"), and the high school allocation policy of Ishikawa Prefecture cannot control the population outflow of the young people from the area.

    This research took up a new kind of inequality, the digital divide in an information society. Our purpose is to clarify the cultural, psychological, and social effects of the revolution of information technology (IT)
    As for cultural aspects, we discussed about the dynamic states of sense of value in an information society. As for social aspects, we focused on the change of lifestyle or way of communication, and analyzed the digital divide from the viewpoint of inequalities among social stratifications such as gender, age, region, education, job and income. As for psychological aspects, we placed importance on the effects of IT use on the relationship between work and personality, the inter-relationship among self-direction, intellectual flexibility, and authoritarianism, and social consciousness in the highly-sophisticated information society.
    To examine the issues as noted above, we conducted a series of national surveys, The Japan Survey on Information Society(JIS). Three surveys have been conducted thus far, Survey 1 (JIS 2001) in 2001, Survey 2 (JIS 2002) in 2002 and Survey 3 (JIS 2004) in 2004. The samples of the JIS surveys are men and women aged 20 to 89 (20 to 79 for JIS2004). The sampling method used is multi-stage stratified random sampling. The survey method used for JIS2002 is a face-to-face interview method. In the cases of JIS2001 and JIS2004, we used both a face-to-face interview method and self-administered questionnaire. The sample size are 2,000 (1,500 for JIS2001). The completion ratio is 67.4% for JIS2001, 62.8% for JIS2002 and 64.7% for JIS2004.
    In order to report JIS surveys and their findings, we published "The Interim Report of The Japan Survey on Information Society." Our database of social research, Social Research Database on Questionnaire(SRDQ), also offers the information and the data of JIS surveys on the web site (http://srdq.osaka-u.ac.jp).

    The purpose of this research is to show the new computer-aided coding procedure to analyze various type of qualitative data and to perform multi-variate analyses for some quaitative data.
    The coding method is as follows (1)transcripts are input in ASCII format in several groups according to the time of interview or each sample of open-ended questionnnaire research and so on ; (2)the computer program disaggregates the transcripts into words to which codes are assigned (3)the codes are integrated into several meaningful categories by the cross-tabulation of two variables, time and code or sample and code; (4)a contour map made from the cross-table helps to grasp the significance of the categories and their relations in data ; and (5)qualitative description is used as a supplement for the portions of text which have no important categories in computer coding analysis. We have made two computer programs excellent in the user interface to accomplish this procedure and the manual in which usage is described.
    We discussed how theories in qualitatve data alanysis related to this coding procedure and concluded that Grounded theory and Narrative approach were very useful in analyzing and interpreting these data.
    We collected the data of newspapers in 1990's, the tables of contents in magazine for 20 years and more than 1,200 respondenses by open-ended questions: To analyzed these data, we make frequency tables, generate cross tabulations, make contour maps and perform multivariate analyses including cluster analysis and corresponding analysis. These are unprecedented analysis.
    The manual of computer program, the theory supported coding procedures and examples of analysis using computer coding applied for various qualitative data are printed as a research report

    昨年までに、島根県東部への実地調査を繰り返して、現代の地方中山間地域の若者たちのショート・ライフコースの質的・量的データを大量に獲得してきた。これはデジタルビデオ映像、スチール写真、会話記録、文書資料、地図など多岐にわたる。
    本年度前半は様々な視点からこのデータを分析した。その結果は学歴社会における地方からの人口流出についての、トラッキング理論に基づく新しい研究としてまとめた。その過程において最終的な資料収集と調査のために、島根県東部地域などに繰り返し出張を行なって、対象者のライフヒストリーを精密に作成した。
    その後、研究全体をB6判251ページの単著学術刊行物『学歴社会のローカル・トラック-地方からの大学進学』として刊行した(世界思想社2001年9月)。そして教育社会学、地域社会学、エスノグラフィ研究、階層研究の諸分野の国内外の研究者に同書の内容を示しレビューを受けて、今後の研究の方向を探った。さらに同研究をもとにして2001年10月の日本教育社会学会大会で研究報告を行なった。
    また、上述の学術的な成果公表と平行して、調査対象者、調査対象地域に対して研究成果をわかり易く報告して社会貢献に努めた。

    この研究では現代若者にとって、大学進学・就職というライフコースや地域移動が、どのような社会意識形成効果をもつのかを実証的に明らかにした。1992年10月に当時高校3年生であったサンプルに対して、進路、価値観,精神状態、自己概念、両親に対する思いなど様々な社会的態度を尋ねる質問紙調査を行なっているが、この対象サンプル45名に対し、今回再び同様の追跡質問紙調査を行なった。対象が中国地方の山村の進学クラスであったため、それぞれのサンプルは6年の期間を経て、地域移動を伴なう進学・初職就業を終え、現在24歳となっている。今回の質問紙調査では35ケースの回答を得ることができた。さらに13名の対象者からは20時間に及ぶ面接インタビューのデータを映像と音声として獲得した。
    地位達成のダイナミズムを、質的・量的双方のアプローチから試みる調査の前例は未だ多くは存在しない。そのため、分析は慎重に専門知識の提供を得ながら進め、現在調査データを集計し終えた状況である。
    質問紙調査からは、現代若者がライフコースを進めるに従って、自己概念を確立し自己の能力や獲得的属性を肯定していく様子が明らかになった。逆に、大きな挫折経験によって以前の自尊心や自己能力感を喪失したケースもあった。他方で、高校時代までに獲得された価値観は、疾風怒濤の多難な6年間を経ても大きくは変化せず、当時のままで維持されていることが明らかになった。また、質問紙調査では明らかにならない受験の進学の失敗の挫折感や、就職活動の際の方向性などは、面接インタビュー調査に基づくライフヒストリーから徐々に明らかになりつつある。
    今後はこの研究結果をまとめて学術的に報告していく予定である。

    In this research, we analyze the survey data of high school seniors in 13 schools in Hyogo prefecture that was conducted in the end of the first term in 1981 and in 1997. Sample size of this survey is 2180 in 1981, and 2397 in 1997.
    Main findings of this research are as follows :
    (1)Compared with 1981, high school senior girls' career plans have changed in almost all aspects.They intend to enter universities rather than junior colleges, and want not to become teachers, nurses or clerical workers that are believed to be suitable for girls but rather to become other professionals like sports instructors, animators and journalists and so on. Their attitudes have become more occupation-oriented. But this change does not mean they compete with boys, who want to enter traditional professions like engineers, medical doctors, lawyers and certified public accountants.
    (2)Gender role attitudes affect boys' career plans as well as girls' plans. This means gender identity differentiates career perspectives of both sexes.
    (3)Occupational aspiration of high school seniors is not only based on the occupational status but also based on the technical aspects of the occupation.
    (4)Recently, it is said that 'serious' attitudes, especially occupational ethics, of youth have declined. But we cannot find clear evidence for this analysis.
    (5)We also analyzed personal networks of 'significant others'. The results show girls' networks are more based on close contact with friends in the same school than that of boys.
    (6)Authoritarian-conservatism of high school seniors is higher than that of adults. This implies the necessity of research in the deprivation process of authoritarian-conservatism in adulthood.

    We have studied about foreign workers in Hamamatsu city area for three years. Many of them have come from Brazil. We interested in system of reception of Brazilian People and conflicts between Brazilians and Japanese because of difference of their cultural background. The results of our studies are now in printing.
    Prof.MANIWA studied about crimes of foreign people and he used formal data of police or other institutions.
    He has considered of culture that influenced to crimes which foregner caused.
    Through long inquiry of African Culture Prof.SHIMADA interested in multi-cultural and multi-racial society. This time he studied the thinking of foreign people about playing and working.
    Prof.KURIOKA had join with "Hamamatzu Foreign Labors Solidarity" which was a volintary group for suspending foreign people for one year. From this research he tried to explain the reason why the group could aid foreign people so actively and to make clearly the problems which the group had.
    Associated Prof.NOZAWA has researched about networks of the community of foreign people. He had made participant investigations in Brazilian community in Hamamatsu and observed some events.
    Mr.JUGON who are a lecturer of French and has studied psychopathology of Japanese people investigated the difference of mind of French and Japanese.
    Our book will has other reports which our assistant researchers had written about the theme.

    吉川教授らは昨年、全国の20～64歳を対象に仕事や家庭、生活などについて面接方式の意識調査を実施し、約3500人から回答を得た。吉川教授は「イクメン意識の高まりなど、現役世代の日本人における意識の変化がデータで明らかになった」としている。調査結果によると、「夫が妻と同じくらい家事や育児をするのは当たり前だ」との質問に対し、「そう思う」「どちらかといえばそう思う」と答えた人の割合は、女性の55・1%に対して男性は66・2パーセント。「子供には海外留学をさせたほうがよい」との質問で肯定的に答えた割合は、50代が50・8パーセントだったのに対して20代は37・7パーセントと、若年層の内向き志向が浮き彫りになった。また、20～40代は年上の世代に比べて閉塞（へいそく）感を強く感じており、他人に追い越されたり得たものを失ったりする不安を持つ一方で、募金や寄付などには消極的との結果が出た。

    女性に比べて男性の方が、夫の家事や育児への参加を肯定的に捉えていることが１９日、大阪大の吉川徹教授（計量社会学）らのチームによる社会意識調査で分かった。

    吉川教授は「男性の心構えはできており、参加するための社会制度に課題がある」と話した。

    チームによると、調査は昨年１～６月に実施し、対象は無作為に抽出した当時２０～６４歳の全国の男女計９千人。個人のプロフィルに加えてジェンダー（社会的性差）や経済格差、勤労意識など約１００項目について質問し、約３５００人から有効な回答を得た。(共同通信)
