    Abstract

    Objectives

A growing literature examines the effect of retirement on cognitive function, but pays little attention to how this relationship may depend upon the nature of retirement. Of particular importance is the growing prevalence of gradual retirement characterized by continued employment—either with a new employer or with the same employer—after retiring from a career job.

    Methods

We use data from men and women aged 50 or older in the Japanese Study of Aging and Retirement to examine the effects of full retirement, partial retirement with the same employer, and partial retirement with a new employer on cognitive function. Our analyses consider the moderating role of career job complexity and exploit distinctive features of the Japanese public pension and mandatory retirement systems to estimate the causal effect of retirement type on cognition.

    Results

Results indicate that partial retirement with the same employer has a significant and adverse effect on cognitive function (relative to those not yet retired). In contrast, those who experienced either full retirement or partial retirement with a new employer were, on average, no different from those still in their career job. Partial retirement with a new employer has a beneficial effect on cognition among those who had a high-complexity career job.

    Discussion

Results are consistent with the idea that novel work exposures and experiences have a beneficial effect on cognition. They also suggest that ongoing policy efforts to promote partial retirement with the same employer may have unexpected adverse implications for cognitive health.

  • Social capital and refraining from medical care among elderly people in Japan Reviewed

Background: Refraining from required medical care can worsen health, particularly for the elderly, and increase public medical expenditure, which destabilizes the financial aspect of social security. Social capital, such as trust between residents and the norms of reciprocity in the community, is a possible measure to prevent refraining from medical care.
Methods: We studied survey data collected in a small area in Japan that included a high response rate (91.6 %) to evaluate refraining from medical care. Self-reported refraining from required medical care from among 1016 elderly people, aged >= 60 ( male = 490; female = 526), was used as a dependent variable. Social capital indicators were mean values of people's attitude toward the generalized trust and norms of reciprocity in each community. We estimated the association between community level social capital and individuals' probability of refraining from medical care while controlling individual factors such as age, education, and marital status.
Results: Logit estimation results showed that only generalized trust is associated with low probability of refraining from medical care among the elderly in small communities. The marginal effect for 0.1 increase in community level trust is 4 % decrease in the probability of refraining from medical care. In larger communities, generalized trust is not associated with the probability of refraining from medical care.
Conclusions: This finding suggests that the generalized trust is effective in smaller communities as far as related to access to medical care. In small communities, policy to increase generalized trust to support medical care for elderly is recommended.

The study aim is to examine the effect of non-familial support for elderly persons on their refraining from medical care. We used survey data collected in a small, semi-mountainous area of Hakusan in Mie prefecture, Japan (response rate = 91.7%). Community officials visited respondents' houses to distribute the questionnaires on September 1, 2012; these were collected by September 20, 2012. Self-reported refraining from required medical care was used as a dependent variable for the 1341 elderly males and females aged 60 or over who participated. An endogeneity test of three factors of non-familial support―family doctor, close neighbors, and close friends other than neighbors―was undertaken. The results showed that these factors were not endogenous.<br>The frequencies of self-reported refraining from medical care were as follows: often (4.0%), sometimes (13.6%), seldom (32.7%), and never (49.7%). The ordered probit estimation revealed that among the factors of non-familial support, having a home doctor and having close friends other than neighbors were negatively associated with the frequency of refraining from medical care. Conversely, having close neighbors was not statistically associated with refraining from medical care. These results suggest that non-familial support can prevent elderly people from refraining from medical care. Local governments could ensure that elderly people have a family doctor and help them to create a supportive, non-familial network.

This study examines the effect of the Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Raising Next-Generation Children on childbirth and women's job continuity. This Act requires firms to support their employees in bearing and rearing children. In particular, it helps working mothers to continue their careers, thereby reducing the opportunity cost of having children and boosting childbirth. Although the Act requires large firms to support their employees in this regard, it merely recommends that small- and medium-sized firms do so. In consequence, it potentially has greater influence on employees of large firms than on those of small- and medium-sized firms. Difference-in-differences estimation results demonstrate that the Act has a positive effect on the joint probability of childbirth and women's job continuity

The purpose of this paper is to examine different factors that promote transition to permanent employment by gender and by educational groups while taking account of regional labor demand, using the micro data of monthly Labor Force Survey 2002 to 2007 when economy was on the path of recovery. Though Japanese firms are known for long term employment practices, following the financial crisis of 1997 to 1998, firms increased termed and temporary employment in place of long term employees, resulting in a significant decline in youth with employment contract without termination, or Seishain.\\r\\\Our main findings show that a low job demand at one's school graduation, represented by monthly prefectural job openings to job seekers ratio, significantly decreases the probability of getting a Seishain job. This effect was found to be strong and lasting.\\r\\\For those in a pool of precarious employment, economic upturn, again represented by monthly prefectural job openings to job seekers ratio, does have positive effect on the youth's transition to permanent employment, but only to a smaller degree. Age has a large negativ\e effect on transition to stable employment, while education has a positive effect.\\r\\\Among precarious employment, more women in temporary dispatch are found to make transition to permanent employment as compared to part-time and arubaito , while for men, those in termed full-time employment did the best. The Government is taking measures for improved job placement of the youth. Among arrays of measures, "job caffe " is one of the core measures, creating prefectural one-stop job seeking center for youth implemented from 2004 to 2006, with 20 "model prefectures" among 47 prefectures initiating variety of activities. By making figures as to the percentage of average visit to "job caffe " of youth in age group of 15 to 34 by prefectures, and adding this variable in the transition equation, we found that active prefectural "job caffe " activities have small positive sign in transition to permanent employment for most educational group of males.

As is broadly known, the contribution by Japanese husbands toward childcare and housework is much smaller than that among other developed countries. Recently however, as more wives have taken jobs outside the home, it has been suggested that husbands'lesser contribution to childcare is one cause of declining fertility in Japan. This possibility is symmetrical with increases in fertility rates after 1980s in Nordic and English-speaking countries. This study explores the effects in five countries of the husband's participation in childcare on willingness to bear additional children. We use the 2005 international comparative survey on fertility decline conducted in the United States, France, Sweden, Japan, and Korea. Results from these data suggest that the husband's involvement in childcare has a significant positive effect on the willingness to bear more children in Sweden, Japan, and Korea. This effect is, however, observed only among wives in Sweden and only among husbands in Japan and Korea. No effect is observed in the United States and France. It is probable that these results are caused by the difference in couple's evaluation of the husband's childcare.

Some previous papers point out that labor market situation, macro level, with which individuals face right after graduation effect one's marriage timing. The effect of individuals' employment status, micro level, right after graduation, however, is still unsolved. This paper examines the relationship between employment status right after graduation and marriage timing. For this purpose, survival analysis is performed with JGSS data. The results suggest that employment status right after graduation effects male's marriage timing but not female's.

We found that after 2009 and then also after 2013, university graduated women who continues to keep long-term employment increased substantially. Higher supply of child care places, as well as the increase in the child care leave allowance contributed to the increase. Government's initiative targeting overtime work also significantly reduced weekly work hours. However, we found that timing on the second birth lagged for double income couples and that husbands' higher share in domestic work statistically significantly increased second births of working couples. Male's workplace norm affected their domestic work share, implying need for change for workplace norm.
Those without dating partner continues to increase among never-marrieds. Lower income, non-standard work, gap in male-female ratio significantly reduced the probability of one's having a dating partner, while perception of one's parent having good relationship with one another increased positive attited towards mating.

In this study, we examined the transformation process of marital relationships by utilizing nationwide family panel survey data. Our focus was on the possibility of ascertaining family transformations at the individual level, identified by trend surveys comprising repeated cross-sectional studies. Prior to our analysis, we prepared a weighting program to compensate for attrition from the panel. Next, we requested several researchers to develop panel analysis programs and report the analysis results that they obtained from these programs. The results of these analyses were reported during thematic sessions at academic conferences as well as research meetings. For the specific results of this study’s analyses, please refer to our upcoming publication from Minerva Shobo (ed. Michiko Nishino).

The questionnaire survey concerning the economic policy was executed six times in total as a frame in this study. The panel data is used for empirical analysis of each researchers and some important discoveries were performed. The level of happiness seems to be different according to the response pattern to the consumption tax. Happy people don't change the consumption behavior to the consumption tax, and unhappy people negatively react to the consumption tax. As a result, the influence of the consumption tax depends on the state of the mind.

By using a panel study method that followed the same cohort, this study collected nation-wide data on contemporary Japanese families as part of the National Family Research of Japan (NFRJ), organized by the Japan Society of Family Sociology. Beginning with 1,879 participants who responded to the NFRJ08 in January 2009, an annual postal follow-up survey was conducted; it was followed by a detailed survey for which respondents were visited. The response rate was between 80 and 90 percent, with complete data from all 5 surveys collected from 1,317 respondents.
Around 40 members of the Society formed a research group that met two-three times per year to hold workshops on panel data analysis methods and review the results of the data analysis. Members of the research group also participated in data cleaning and some of the survey visits. A summary of this study along with details of the basic characteristics of the data was published as a report.
