本研究は，外国語教育研究において主要な研究領域である四技能（リスニング，スピーキング，リーディング，ライティング），文法，語彙，学習方略，動機づけの各領域において，代表的な先行研究の追試（replication）を行い，その再現性を問うことにより，外国語教育研究における再現可能性の程度を検証し，また，先行研究とは異なり，より洗練されたデータ分析を行うことにより，学術的かつ教育的に有用な情報を示すとともに，外国語教育研究において新たな研究領域を創出することを目指す。

The fundamental status of spoken language relative to written language has been acknowledged by many linguists. However, actual research on language has focused on the written form, and there are very few research on natural disfluent speech in daily conversation. This project sheds light on the inherent disfluency of spoken language from a grammatical point of view. Previous research has pointed out the possibility of relevance of morphological complexity to the plausibility of disfluency patterns. Apart from this, we suggest that the degree of agglutinativity of a language also affects disfluency. According to our Agglutinativity Hypothesis, a high degree of agglutinativity of a language tends to allow for a [prolongation + continuation] type of disfluency within a single morpheme. We showed this based on observation of Chinese, French, Hungarian, Korean, Sinhalese, Tamil, and Turkish in addition to Japanese.

This study discusses the findings of and focuses on the automatization of natural language processing, as well as the role played by the function of noticing, attention, and interactive alignment. Among the findings, this study identified that the phenomenon of syntactic priming－one of the mechanisms supporting the function of interactive alignment－also appears through spoken language production if the language is intelligible. While the degree of mapping of the syntactic and semantic structures of language comprehension varies on the learner's language proficiency, the abstract representation of syntactic structure can be acquired through repeated exposure of the same sentence structure by using the priming method. This may also make the progression of implicit learning possible, which handles syntactic structure and semantic roles.

The purpose of this study is to develop effective teaching approach toward English pronunciation, particularly English prosody, at the junior high or high school levels.
In order to achieve this aims, first of all, the researchers looked into theories of prosodic aspects and theories and practices about teaching English pronunciation. Based on the obtained information, the researchers carefully chose what aspects of prosody and in what order teachers should teach and developed the tasks and activities for teaching English prosody. With the help of teachers and learners at the attached secondary school, the researchers had an opportunity to implement these tasks and activities into classrooms and to obtain data and feedback from teachers and students. The results of a questionnaire on their awareness toward prosodic features showed significant gains in learners’ awareness toward prosodic features both in and out of classroom situations. -

The present study aims to examine how foreign accents derived from one’s first language (L1) affect second language (L2) sentence comprehension processes in communications between non-native speakers of English from different L1 backgrounds. Japanese L1 learners of L2 English listened to a series of English sentences produced by Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai L1 speakers. The listeners found English utterances by Japanese and Korean speakers easy to understand, possibly due to the similarity in phonetic and phonological features between the two languages, while the Chinese and Thai speakers’ English utterances posed comprehension difficulties.

Politeness is believed to be crucial in building a harmonious relationship with others and in achieving successful communication; however, it is not effectively taught in the EFL context. We thus began our research by analyzing teaching materials in terms of politeness, and then sought to describe the mechanisms in which politeness is realized, on the basis of our questionnaire survey. The results of our project suggest: (1) politeness always comes with other language functions or acts, and so it can be appropriately described in conjunction with other acts languages can perform; (2) it is promising to approach politeness in terms of lexis.

This project was undertaken to further research on spoken Japanese (including cadence) which has conspicuously lagged behind in comparison with research on written language. Similar to the analysis of major Japanese language speaker profiles (verbal characters) in our previous research, which emphasized “characters” (Kiban (A) H19-22), this research considers the major “contexts” seen in Japanese speech, and analyses the form of speech based on contexts. It clarifies, under specific contexts, what sort of speaking privileges are possessed by people in certain positions with respect to others in certain positions, and this is then used to generate data.

These findings suggest that proficiency of learners may not necessarily entail their pragmatic awareness. Therefore, educators should be well aware that developing pragmatic competence of learners should require attention to their motivational profiles.

平成16年度の助成により、必要な物品をそろえることができた。それにより、昨年度から継続して本年度も、それらを用いて調査を開始することが可能となった。以下にその手順を記す。
平成17年度4月から、学生とアポイントを取り、英語発話の録音を継続的に行っている。発話に用いられた対話文は、拙博士論文に用いた対話文と同一のもので、Brazil et al. (1980)、Roach (2000)を基に作成したものである。こうすることによって、拙博士論文において収集したデータとの比較も可能となるようにした。また、発音教材からの対話文も取り入れることで、学生同士で擬似的に対話を行い、その録音も行うことができた。学生に対して、最大でほぼ月に一回のペースでの調査を実施することができた。
平成18年度においては、同じ学生に対しての調査を継続するとともに、これまでの調査において収集した音声データを分析し、経年におけるイントネーション使用の変化を分析・考察を行っている。平成17年度に収集したデータについて、平成18年8月に実施された全国高等専門学校英語教育学会において口頭発表を行い、論文化したものを同学会の『研究論集』に投稿、掲載された。
これまでの研究によって、学生のイントネーションには一定の変化が見られることが明らかとなった。学生への指導は余り行われていないこともあり、自然な学習状況での変化とみなすことができる。
今後も、これまでに採取したデータをまとめ、研究を継続し、英語イントネーションにおける語用論的機能の習得過程の一端を明らかにしたいと考えている。 -
