    In recent years, research on mathematical models describing crowd dynamics has become increasingly important. Among this research, a two-dimensional mathematical model with the effect of body rotation describing bidirectional flows has been constructed, and its fundamental diagram has been shown to be qualitatively consistent with real experimental data from the perspective of flow rate inversion. However, this property has not been mentioned in one-dimensional mathematical models. In this paper, we introduce a new, simpler, one-dimensional cellular automaton model to focus on the direction of particles and the effect of flipping instead of body rotation by extending the well-known TASEP as a solvable lattice model. Our model was found to be qualitatively consistent with the actual phenomenon of flow rate inversion, both numerically and theoretically.

    Abstract

    We propose an improved version of the Rule-184 fuzzy cellular automaton model for describing the key properties of real-world traffic flow. A crucial aspect of modeling involves incorporating the time delay caused by vehicles’ inertia and reaction time in a nonlinear difference equation. Specifically, the effect of time delay was incorporated into the model’s transition rates as an internal form. We then conducted a bifurcation analysis to investigate whether this model has important properties for representing traffic flow. The analysis results indicate that the proposed model exhibits bistability at a certain density region, in which both free and jamming flows coexist. Furthermore, the uniform solution was stable at all densities depending on the values of the parameters included in the model.

    Both macro and micro states of Newtonian particles are used to define entropy. However, in previous research studies, which focused on traffic flow from the perspective of thermodynamics and information theory, researchers did not fully determine how entropy can be defined for self-driven particles that do not satisfy Newton’s laws. One attempt to formularize entropy in a one-dimensional traffic flow has been based on information theory. Entropy has been defined by focusing only on the location variation of the vehicles but not on the velocity variation of the vehicles. Moreover, no study has succeeded in considering the time evolution of entropy in a self-driven particle system. In this study, we redefine the entropy and mutual information in one-dimensional traffic flow from the information theoretical perspective, focusing on the velocity variation of vehicles. Moreover, we advance the thermodynamic analysis of one-dimensional traffic flow by examining the time evolution of the new formularized entropy. To observe the time evolution of the formularized entropy, we conducted numerical simulations using both stochastic optimal velocity (SOV) and zero-range process with a slow-start rule (ZRP+SLS) models that can reproduce a metastable state, which occurs before the congestion begins at a high average velocity and short headway. Moreover, we used the mutual information to anticipate a metastable state – a sign of congestion – by calculating experimental data from three following vehicles on a real expressway to demonstrate the practical application of the formularized mutual information. Thus, we analyzed traffic flow both macroscopically and microscopically using the new formularized entropy to contribute to the studies of self-driven particle systems in both ways of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics or information theory.

    Cellular Automaton (CA) is a new and suitable approach to model various kinds of SDP systems, such as vehicular traffic, pedestrian dynamics, and logistics. Especially, the advantages of CA modeling approach are follows; (1) CA models can explicitly consider the exclusion principle, which is an essential factor of SDP system. (2) Some of CA models, e.g. TASEP, can be solved analytically. In this paper, we present some results about two traffic situations, i.e., the dynamics through a rail crossing and the dynamics in a queue of vehicles, using a CA model for 1D traffic flow.

    Various motions of camphor boats in the water channel exhibit both a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous state, depending on the number of boats, when unidirectional motion along an annular water channel can be observed even with only one camphor boat. In a theoretical research, the unidirectional motion is represented by a traveling wave solution in a model. Since the experimental results described above are thought of as a kind of bifurcation phenomena, we would like to investigate a linearized eigenvalue problem in order to prove the destabilization of a traveling wave solution. However, the eigenvalue problem is too difficult to analyze even if the number of camphor boats is 2. Hence we need to make a reduction on the model. In the present paper, we apply the center manifold theory and reduce the model to an ordinary differential system.

    In order to study pedestrian dynamics, mathematical models play an important role. It is well-known that a social force model exhibits clogging or what is called the "faster-is-slower effect" (Helbing et al., Nature 407: 487-490, 2000). Also, the authors in Frank and Dorso (Phys A 390: 2135-2145, 2011) and Kirchner et al. (Phys Rev E 67: 056122, 2003) reported that an obstacle facilitates and obstructs evacuation of pedestrians trying to get out of a room with an exit, dependently on its position, size, and shape. In particular, as stated in Frank and Dorso (Phys A 390: 2135-2145, 2011), an obstacle has a strong influence on pedestrians if it is put in a site shifted a little from the front of the exit. However, it has not been shown where and how it is the most efficiency to set up an obstacle. Thus we investigate the dynamics of pedestrians and clarify the effect of a disk-shaped obstacle with various sizes placed in several positions via numerical simulations for a social force model. Finally, we calculate a leaving time of pedestrians for each size and position of an obstacle, and determine an "optimal size" of an obstacle in the case that it is set up in a site shifted from the front of the exit.

    We have developed a new calibration method to analyze the effect of velocity variance of a single particle (VVSP) on flow in cellular automaton (CA) models. We have verified that the flow in the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) decreases when VVSP increases even if the mean velocity of each particle is same. The effect of VVSP on other CA models, such as a stochastic Fukui-Ishibashi (SFI) model and a simple evacuation (SEV) model, are also investigated. When VVSP increases, the flow decreases in the one dimensional models (TASEP and SFI model), whereas, it increases in SEV model. Furthermore, it is investigated how the effect of VVSP is strengthened or weakened by the characteristic parameter in SFI model.

    We have conducted an experiment to demonstrate "jam-absorption driving", which is a method of driving with a single car to avoid being entangled in a jam by changing its headway and velocity dynamically. We used real cars on a circuit. In the experiment, the car doing jam-absorption driving takes a long headway in advance before a jam comes.     We show that there exists a typical dynamic arch-shape structure in pedestrian evacuation system governed by the social force model. It is well known that the simulation of pedestrian evacuation from a square room using the social force model shows arch-shape formation and clogging in front of the exit. It is also known experimentally and numerically that an obstacle near the exit could improve the flow rate, but detailed mechanism of this effect is not clear. In this paper, we show the existence of the "dynamic arch", the typical structure in the long term, by using the social force model and the image processing. The time-averaged image of the system shows us the existence of the typical structure in the system and it can be interpreted as the probability distribution of the arch formation. With this method, we discuss the possible physical mechanism of the effect of an obstacle in the pedestrian system. From the observation of the morphological feature of the arch obtained by the simulation and image processing, we show that the obstacle affects the structure of the arch in three ways. These effects could lead the easy-to-break arch that enhances the flow rate of the system.

    The relaxation process in a queue is very important for the smooth movement of pedestrians. As previously reported, the propagation speed of a starting wave, that is, a wave of people's successive reactions in the relaxation process of a queue, and the initial density of a queue are fundamentally related by a power law. In addition, when the walking velocity of the leader of a queue, called "escape velocity", is optimal, the flow of the queue is maximized and the queue is not separated. In order to investigate how the behaviour of the followers in a queue changes with the leader's velocity, we performed experimental measurements on real pedestrians. In our experiment, we set the walking velocity of the leader of a queue using three metronome tempos (fast, normal, and slow) transmitted through earphones. The experimental results show that the escape velocities corresponding to the fast and slow tempos cause empty spaces in a queue and limit the walking velocities of the queue members, respectively.

    We have introduced the effect of delay in walking from the head of a queue to the service windows in the queueing model and obtain a suitable type of queueing system under various conditions by both computational simulation and theoretical analysis. When there are multiple service windows, the queueing theory indicates that mean waiting time in a fork-type queueing system (Fork), which collects pedestrians into a single queue, is smaller than that in a parallel-type queueing system (Parallel), i.e., queues for each service window. However, in our walking-distance introduced queueing model, we have examined that mean waiting time in Parallel becomes smaller when both the arrival probability of pedestrians and the effect of walking distance are large. Moreover, enhanced Forks, which shorten waiting time by reducing the effect of walking distance, are considered, and parts of our results are also verified by real queueing experiments.     We investigate the mechanism of the phenomenon called the "faster-is-slower" effect in pedestrian flow studies analytically with a simplified phenomenological model. It is well known that the flow rate is maximized at a certain strength of the driving force in simulations using the social force model when we consider the discharge of self-driven particles through a bottleneck. In this study, we propose a phenomenological and analytical model based on a mechanics-based modeling to reveal the mechanism of the phenomenon. We show that our reduced system, with only a few degrees of freedom, still has similar properties to the original many-particle system and that the effect comes from the competition between the driving force and the nonlinear friction from the model. Moreover, we predict the parameter dependences on the effect from our model qualitatively, and they are confirmed numerically by using the social force model.

We consider mechanisms of this illusion, formulate the conditions for maximizing the strength of the illusion and classify the apparent motions into eight patterns according to the widths of a pair of objects and their distance.     The propagation speed of people's reaction in a relaxation process of a queue, so-called starting-wave, has an essential role for pedestrians and vehicles to achieve smooth movement. For example, a queue of vehicles with appropriate headway (density) alleviates the traffic jams, since the delay of reaction to start is minimized. In the previous study (Tomoeda et al., Fifth international conference on pedestrian and evacuation dynamics. Springer), it was found that the fundamental relation between the propagation speed of starting-wave and density is well approximated by the power law function. We have revealed the existence of optimal density, where the travel time of last pedestrian in a queue with the starting-wave to pass the head position of the initial queue is minimized. This optimal density inevitably plays a significant role to achieve smooth movement of crowds. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

    "Can a single car really absorb a traffic jam without making new jams?" In this paper, we focus on this frequently-discussed question, and have succeeded in making a theoretical framework of a driving technique how to absorb a traffic jam by using a minimal microscopic model. Jam-absorption driving comes from Beaty (Beaty, 1998
    Beaty, 2013), and it is composed of a sequence of two actions termed the " slow-in" and " fast-out" The " slow-in" is the action to avoid being captured by a jam and remove it by decelerating and taking a longer headway in advance. The " fast-out" is performed after the " slow-in" , and it is the action to follow the car in front without unnecessary time gaps by accelerating quickly. In our theoretical framework, we have represented the recipe of the actions such as the time-space points and the velocity. Moreover, we have clarified the condition of no secondary jams due to this driving, i.e., the condition that compression and expansion waves caused by this driving meet each other and disappear. Particularly, we have calculated how these waves propagates to the following cars and the point where and when they disappear. Besides, we have analyzed how this point moves in time-space diagrams by varying the timing to start the jam-absorption, and revealed that the pattern of this movement is not constant but changes greatly by the velocity-headway relationships. Furthermore, as a more realistic problem, we have formulated the driving for jam-absorption in two steps of deceleration, which brings rich patterns of collisions among compression and expansion waves. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

    In the present paper, we investigate arch-shaped equilibrium solutions in the social force model proposed by Helbing and Molnar (Phys Rev E 51:4282, 1995) and Helbing et al. (Nature 407:487, 2000). The social force model is a system of ordinary differential equations, which describe the motion of the pedestrians under a panic situation.     We have calculated a fundamental diagram of pedestrians by dividing the velocity term into two parts, length of stride and pace of walking (number of steps per unit time). In spite of the simplicity of the calculation, our fundamental diagram reproduces that of traffic and pedestrian dynamics models in special cases. Theoretical analysis on pace indicates that rhythm which is slower than normal walking pace in free-flow situation increases flow if the fundamental diagram of flow is convex downward in high-density regime. In order to verify this result, we have performed the experiment by real pedestrians and observed improvement of pedestrian flow in congested situation by slow rhythm. Since slow rhythm achieves large pedestrian flow without dangerous haste, it may be a safety solution to attain smooth movement of pedestrians in congested situation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

Moreover, when the starting wave is characterized by the power law (beta > 1), we have revealed the existence of optimal density, where the required time, i.e., the sum of the waiting time until the starting wave reaches the last pedestrian in a queue and his/her travel time to pass the head position of the initial queue, is minimized. This optimal density inevitably plays a significant role in achieving a smooth movement of crowds and vehicles in a queue.

    We have developed a simple model for pedestrians by dividing walking velocity into two parts, which are step size and pace of walking (number of steps per unit time). Theoretical analysis on pace indicates that rhythm that is slower than normal-walking pace in a low-density regime increases flow if the flow-density diagram is convex downward in a high-density regime. In order to verify this result, we have performed an experiment with real pedestrians and observed the improvement of flow in a congested situation using slow rhythm.

    We present a computational method to create a new illusionary solid sign inspired by two kinds of illusions
    "hollow mask illusion" and "crater illusion". The threedimensional vertices of the illusionary solid sign are obtained by the straight line Voronoi diagram for a given base shape. We also provide a specific example of our new illusionary solid sign, so-called hollow arrow sign. Just like the name implies, our new sign has a hollow structure.     In this study, we investigate the flux of self-driven particles (SDPs) in spontaneous zipper configuration merging at the junction of an open two-lane lattice. Particles are simulated by a cellular automaton model with a slow-to-start (SlS) rule. Spontaneous merging is induced by a local rule that the hopping probability of particles moving in one lane decreases with the approach of particles from the other lane. By means of numerical simulations, we show that, by varying the rate of injection of particles, the SlS rules and the hopping probabilities, the particle flux is improved as a result of the spontaneous zipper merging even if each SDP decreases its hopping probability during the zipper merging. We also investigate asymmetric interactions between particles moving in one lane while ignoring particles in the other lane. We find that asymmetric interactions are unsuitable for improving the particle flux except for the onset of congestion. Lastly, we estimate an approximate particle flux by a mean-field analysis, which confirms the improvement in particle flux, and is in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations.

    In driving a vehicle, drivers respond to the changes of both the headway and the relative velocity to the vehicle in front. In this paper a new car-following model including these maneuvers is proposed. The acceleration of the model becomes infinite (has a singularity) when the distance between two vehicles is zero, and the asymmetry between the acceleration and the deceleration is incorporated in a nonlinear way. The model is simple but contains enough features of driving for reproducing real vehicle traffic. From the linear stability analysis, we confirm that the model shows the metastable homogeneous flow around the critical density, beyond which a traffic jam emerges. Moreover, we perform experiments to verify this model. From the data it is shown that the acceleration of a vehicle has a positive correlation with the relative velocity.

    We investigate the reaction speed of a pedestrian to the predecessor in a queue which significantly affects the flow inside the queue. This is one of the most essential points for studying the dynamics of pedestrians. We have performed experiments of pedestrians' walk in a queue on a flat road, upslope and downslope to measure the propagation speed of the starting wave and stopping wave. We have found that the propagation speed of stopping wave is faster than starting wave on a flat road, whereas the speed of stopping wave is slower than starting wave on the other cases. This reverse result has been studied by using stochastic cellular automaton model in which a perspective of predecessors and the inertial effect are introduced. Moreover, in the case of starting wave we can estimate the elapsed time of the last pedestrian in a queue to move after the leader starts by using mean field analysis.

    In this paper, we have detailedly studied the effect of conflicts on the pedestrian outflow through an exit. Pedestrians conflict each other at the exit, which is a bottle neck, when they evacuate from a room. The pedestrian outflow decreases when there are many conflicts. In the floor field model, which is a pedestrian model using cellular automata, the conflicts are taken into account by the friction parameter. However, the friction parameter is a constant and does not depends on the number of the pedestrians conflicting at the same time. We have extended the friction parameter to the friction function, which is a function of the number of the pedestrians involved in the conflict. The results of theoretical analysis using the friction function agree with the experimental results much better than using the friction parameter. We have also found that putting an obstacle in front of the exit increase the pedestrian outflow from our experiments. The friction function clearly explains the mechanism of the effect of the obstacle, i.e., the obstacle blocks a pedestrian moving to the exit and decrease the average number of pedestrians involved in the conflicts.

    "Jamology" is an interdisciplinary research of all sorts of jams, e.g. those of vehicles, pedestrians, ants, etc. Our model of pedestrians, called the floor field model, is based on tins study, and it is a two-dimensional generalization of an ant trail model. It is a rule-based cellular automaton model, and efficient in computations since the long-range interaction between pedestrians is imitated by the memory of the floor of only neighboring cells. Recently several generalizations of this model are proposed to make the model more realistic. We use an extended model to study how to make crowd movement smooth. Not only computer simulations but also experiments are shown in this paper. Introduction of pedestrians' anticipation into the model affects the crowd movement significantly, and leads the counterflow smooth. Moreover it is clearly shown experimentally that evacuation dynamics near a bottleneck becomes smooth if we put an obstacle at a suitable place.

    The authors of this paper have found that putting an obstacle in front of an exit in a congested situation increases the pedestrian outflow, which is the number of pedestrians going through an exit with a unit width in a unit time, from their experiments. In this paper, the effects of conflicts and turning, which affect the pedestrian outflow significantly, are introduced by the frictional and turning functions to analyze the effect of an obstacle. They clearly explain the mechanism of the effect of an obstacle, i.e., it blocks a pedestrian moving to the exit and decreases the average number of pedestrians involved in the conflict. The authors have also studied when an obstacle contributes to ease the congestion most effectively. The results of their simulation indicate that its maximum efficacy is achieved at the point where the cluster of pedestrians is started to form. The mean traveling time of pedestrians becomes a quarter if an obstacle is set up since it prevents the formation of the cluster against increase of the inflow by reducing the impact of conflicts.

    In this paper, two important factors which affect the pedestrian outflow at a bottleneck significantly are studied in detail to analyze the effect of an obstacle setup in front of an exit. One is a conflict at an exit when pedestrians evacuate from a room. We use floor field model for simulating such behavior, which is a well-studied pedestrian model using cellular automata. The conflicts have been taken into account by the friction parameter. However, the friction parameter so far is a constant and does not depend on the number of the pedestrians conflicting at the same time. Thus, we have improved the friction parameter by the frictional function, which is a function of the number of the pedestrians involved in the conflict. Second, we have presented the cost of turning of pedestrians at the exit. Since pedestrians have inertia, their walking speeds decrease when they turn and the pedestrian outflow decreases. The validity of the extended model, which includes the frictional function and the turning function, is supported by the comparison of a mean-field theory and real experiments. We have observed that the pedestrian flow increases when we put an obstacle in front of an exit in our real experiments. The analytical results clearly explains the mechanism of the effect of the obstacle, i.e., the obstacle blocks pedestrians moving to the exit and decreases the average number of pedestrians involved in the conflict. We have also found that an obstacle works more effectively when we shift it from the center since pedestrians go through the exit with less turning.

    Heavy traffic congestion occurs daily at merging sections on a highway. For relieving this congestion, possibility of alternative configuration of vehicles on multiple-lane road at a merging area is discussed in this paper. This is the configuration where no vehicles move aside on the other lane. It has merit in making a smooth merging at an intersection or a junction due to the so-called "zipper effect." We show, by developing a cellular automaton model for multiple lanes, that this configuration is achieved by simple local interactions between vehicles neighboring each other. The degree of the alternative configuration in terms of the spatial increase in parallel driving length is studied by using both numerical simulations and mean-field theory. We successfully construct a theoretical method for calculating this degree of the alternative configuration by using cluster approximation. It is shown that the theoretical results coincide with those of the simulations very well.

    In this paper, we have detailedly studied the factors of increasing and decreasing the pedestrian outflow through an exit. One of the major factors is a conflict. In the floor field model, which is a pedestrian model using cellular automata, the conflicts are taken into account by the friction parameter. However, the friction parameter is a constant and does not depend on the number of the pedestrians conflicting at the same time. We have extended the friction parameter to the friction function, which is a function of the number of the pedestrians involved in the conflict. Furthermore, we also consider the effect of turning around at the exit and the effect of avoiding conflicts by going through the exit one after the other, i.e., zipper effect. The results of theoretical analysis of the extended model, which includes three new effects, agree with the experimental results much better than the previous model. We have also found that putting an obstacle in front of the exit increases the pedestrian outflow from our experiments. The friction function clearly explains the mechanism of the effect of the obstacle, i.e., the obstacle blocks a pedestrian moving to the exit and decreases the average number of pedestrians involved in the conflict.

    We introduce the effect of delay in walking from the head of the queue to the service windows in the queueing theory, and obtain the suitable type of queueing system under various conditions. When there are plural service windows, the queueing theory indicates that a fork-type queue, which collects people into a single queue, is more efficient than a parallel-type queue, i.e., queues for each service windows. However, in the walking- distance introduced queueing theory, we find that the paralleltype queue is more efficient when sufficiently many people are waiting in queues, and service time is shorter than walking time. We also consider the situation where there are two kinds of people, whose service time is short and long. The analytical result says that we can decrease people's waiting time and their stress by setting up queues for each kind of people separately.

    A new public conveyance model applicable to buses and trains is proposed in this paper by using stochastic cellular automaton. We have found the optimal density of vehicles, at which the average velocity becomes maximum, significantly depends on the number of stops and passengers behavior of getting on a vehicle at stops. The efficiency of the hail-and-ride system is also discussed by comparing the different behavior of passengers. Moreover, we have found that a big cluster of vehicles is divided into small clusters, by incorporating information of the number of vehicles between successive stops. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V.     Payne model is one of the most fundamental one-dimensional traffic models in terms of the instability of homogeneous flow which is essential phenomenon of traffic flow. However, this model also include one computational issue of numerical divergence for disturbance. We believe that in the physical dynamics of real traffic, growth of disturbance is saturated and the disturbance is propagated as a stable shock wave without divergence behavior. In this paper, the instability of homogeneous traffic flow in Payne model is analyzed in more detail by using reductive perturbatrion method in order to investigate how the disturbance propagates. We have analytically obtained the master equations of first-order and second-order perturbation quantity in long-wave approximations.

    In real traffic flow, we have found jamp phenomena from jam to free flow. From the viewpoints of fluids dynamics, we can say this phenomenon as 'expansion shock wave.' In conventional fuids dynamics, 'expansion shock wave' can never occur because this phenomenon goes against the 2nd law of themodynamics. We analyzed this phenomenon from viewpoints of fluids dynamics.

    A new mathematical model of traffic flow described by nonlinear difference equation is proposed to extend the framework of the "jam-absorption driving", a driving technique aimed at eliminating spontaneous traffic jam on highways, and the proposed model is analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the proposed model exhibits instability of homogeneous flow, which is important for a traffic flow model, and that it has a bistable solution structure. Furthermore, to clarify the common mathematical structure of the proposed model and existing mathematical models of traffic flow, the corresponding partial differential equations and ultra-discrete equations derived by the continuous and ultra-discrete limits of the proposed model are also studied in detail.

    The keyword of eliminating traffic congestion is "slow-in fast-out". In principle, traffic jams can be shortened by slowly approaching the traffic queue and taking action to quickly get out of the queue. In this research, using the stochastic cellular automaton as the fundamental mathematical model and explicitly incorporating the spatial structure (excluded volume effect) inside the traffic queue which has not been considered in the conventional queuing theory. We have revealed the characteristics of the starting-wave (the chain of reaction). Specifically, the propagation speed of the starting-wave can be characterized by a power function of the density, and in the case where the propagation speed is slow, it is found that the queue is smoothly eliminated by moving from an optimal headway distance.
