The purpose of this study is to clarify the spatial structure of the contemporary Indian economy as well as its formation mechanism. For this purpose, we have identified the following five items to focus, namely (1) Spatial structures of eight industries (broiler, dairy, textile, steel, automobile, pharmaceutical, ICT and retail), (2) Mechanism of urban development, (3) Socio-economic changes of suburban villages, (4) Development problems in the less-favored areas, and (5) Dynamics of emerging economic spaces. The growth of India’s economy has widened regional disparities between states, and north-south and east-west economic divides have appeared across India as a whole. The most important achievement of this study was to find the method of analyzing the above mentioned spatial structure of India's economy.

I studied the present conditions of the distribution system around the depopulated area in Tohoku district, Chugoku district and Hokkaido and examined the development possibility of the distribution system that I could apply in the low demand area including the movement sale car. I investigated the actual situation of the movement sale car which co-op Sapporo ran in Hokkaido and analyzed its operation systems and cost structure. I examined how local commerce revived while a population decline went ahead through the tsunami stricken area of the East Japan great earthquake disaster in the Tohoku district. I considered how elderly people secure their own buying channels in temporary housing and examined the actual situation of the movement sale car in their areas to serve elderly people.

In the history of Japan, in addition to natural disasters, Japan has issued many casualties due to threats such as famine, infectious diseases. I revealed the actual situation based on various historical materials. Mr. Mizoguchi of the research representative visited 63 temples nationwide, browsed the Temple death registers, and examined the change in the number of deceased people. In addition to the earthquake / tsunami, famine, infectious diseases typified by cholera had been sacrificed by a large number of infants. In addition, I saw a lot of adult male killed in World War II as human disaster.
Participant Murayama conducted an investigation into the death record from 1770 to 1972, which is said to be the biggest famine in the Czech Republic. Tsuchiya, who is also a shareholder, collected disaster records in the Tohoku region and recommended rationalization of the distribution system at the time of a disaster with regard to reconstruction. -

The late 1990s was the turning point of the urbanization of Japan. It was regarded as the advent of the "post-growth city". Agendas of urban geography towards the formation of a sustainable urban space were examined. As a result, the following topics were identified as agendas to be studied: Reconcentration of population into the inner areas in large metropolitan areas, reduction of commuters from suburbs to central cities, increase of residence movement corresponding to the lifestyle instead of the life cycle, increase of vacant house in suburbs and of gentrification in inner areas, necessity for development of residential environment for young generation’s residence in inner areas of local cities, the problems of large-scale merging of municipalities, directionality of urban studies in the future.

The research examined the characteristics of Mega-Regions which have rapidly grown in contemporary India. Our field survey in Delhi metropolitan region and its surrounding areas clarified that Indian Mega-Regions which are beyond individual metropolitan areas play an important role as industrial clusters, functional spaces of urbanization economy and consumption spaces of middle classes. The growth of Mega-Regions has been concentrated to the western part of India. Therefore it is expected to widen regional disparities.

The damage of flood occurs every year in various countries of the world, especially in Bangladesh and Japan. This study aims at creating a new type of water environmental society in 21st century to reduce the damage of the flood at the minimum. I surveyedfollowing four points.
1) documenting the daily life of flood affected areas in Bangladesh
2) the trinity way of making water environment: preventing flood, utilizing water and enjoying flood.
3) helping the socially vulnerable people such as pagan, women, aged, poor, and
4) mutual learning of the anti-flood measure among the countries: Bangladesh and Japan and Germany. -
地方都市における小売業・サービス業の郊外立地と交通弱者の生活環境

本年度は、昨年度に引き続き、(1)地理情報システムを用いて、群馬県の小売業・サービス業に関するデジタル地図の作成、(2)群馬県における小売業・サービス業の郊外化についての現地調査、の2つを実施してきた。
まず、地理情報システムによるデジタル地図作成では以下のことを実施した。群馬県全体を対象として、1990年代以降におけるロードサイド型の小売業・サービス業の店舗展開についての地図を作成した。昨年度は、コンビニやホームセンターなど主要業態を対象に地図作成を実施したが、本年度は、カー用品店、ファーストフード、ドラッグストアなどの業態も採用して地図作成を実施した。その結果、群馬県の中核都市の郊外地域での商業集積が進んでいること、県の周辺に位置する町村部でも国道の結節点、新たに敷設されたバイパス道にロードサイドショップの進出が進んでいることが明らかになった。
現地調査では、前橋市や高崎市といった主要都市に隣接している町村での商業発展について検討した。そうした町村では、前橋市や高崎市の境界付近を都市計画区域としてロードサイドショップの誘致に積極的であり、都市部の住民の買い物先として地位を高めようとしている。そうすることによって地域経済を発展させ、税収入を増やそうとしている。しかし、2000年に入って市町村合併の機運が進んでいくと、前橋市や高崎市などに吸収合併された場合、そうした町村部は都市計画区域から除外される可能性があることから、自分たちの意図するように都市計画を実施できないことに不安を持つようになった。
このように、モータリゼーションの進んでいる群馬県では、ロードサイドショップが地域の経済や社会に影響を与えるようになっていることが明らかになった。 -
