    Abstract

    Although native speakers (NSs) of English make plural agreement in preverbal-subject sentences (e.g., A pen and eraser *is/are…), previous studies have demonstrated that they prefer singular – not plural – agreement between verbs and conjoined noun phrases (NPs) in expletive there constructions (e.g., there is/are a pen and an eraser…), showing efficiency-driven processing prioritization of agreement between nearest constituents. This paper assesses whether Japanese L2 learners of English (JLE) show this tendency. The results of two self-paced reading experiments together indicated that even though efficiency-driven processing was available to L2 learners, their use was unstable due to the repeated exposure to there are NPpl- and NPpl-type sentences during the task. It seems possible that repeated exposure triggered learners’ knowledge that conjoined NPs are always plural. Hence, it could conceivably be hypothesized that a learner’s specific knowledge intervenes the efficiency-driven processing strategy.

    This study examined number marking comprehension among Japanese learners of second language (L2) English, whose first language (L1) does not have an obligatory number marking system. The study conducted an online sentence comprehension experiment with 96 L1-Japanese learners and 32 native speakers of English, wherein participants engaged in a self-paced reading with Stroop-like number judgment tasks. Participants were required to determine the number of single words in stimuli (e.g. cat/ cats, one word; the cats/ the cat, two-word sets), and their judgment time was measured for singular and plural words. The results indicated that both groups took more time to judge single plural nouns, suggesting that Japanese L2 learners of English automatically activate plurality in online sentence comprehension as native speakers do. In contrast, neither group showed an interference effect of singularity in judging singular two-word noun sets ( the cat), unless the singularity is explicitly marked by indefinite article ( a cat). The lack of interference may be because of unmarkedness of singularity.

    ABSTRACT

    This study aimed to investigate how Japanese learners of English as a foreign language, whose first language does not have obligatory morphological number marking, process conceptual plurality. The targeted structure was reciprocal verbs, which require conceptual plurality to interpret their meanings correctly. The results of a sentence completion task confirmed that participants could use reciprocal verbs reciprocally in English. In a self-paced reading experiment, participants read sentences with reciprocal verbs and those with optionally transitive verbs (e.g., while the king and the queen kissed/left the baby read the book in the bed). There was no reading time delay for reciprocal verbs but a delay for optionally transitive verbs. Therefore, the participants succeeded in processing second language conceptual plurality in the online sentence comprehension task.

    Abstract

    This study, based on Jiang’s (2000. Lexical representation and development in a second language. Applied Linguistics 21(1). 47–77) bilingual lexicon model, investigates the learnability of collocations among 34 Japanese EFL learners and examines the influence of their L1 on such learning. An acceptability judgment task assessed the knowledge of three different types of collocations: English-only collocations that cannot be directly translated into Japanese (e.g., flat rate); congruent collocations that can be translated into Japanese without changing their meaning (e.g., cold tea); and Japanized collocations that are infelicitous in English, but felicitous in Japanese (e.g., yellow voice). After the task, participants translated the collocations and rated the difficulty on a four-point Likert scale. The relationship between the accuracy of these collocations and the translation difficulty rating scores was analyzed using mixed-effects logistic regression modeling to assess L1 influence. The results showed that with increasing L2 proficiency, learners tend to regard congruent and English-only collocations as acceptable, but even highly proficient learners did not fully reject the Japanized collocations. This suggests that as L2 proficiency increased, participants learned to accept felicitous collocations but did not learn to reject Japanized infelicitous ones. In addition, the influence of L1 was evident in English-only and Japanized collocations and could not be avoided by those with increasing proficiency.

    Abstract

    This article addresses the pitfalls of performance analysis in investigating cognitive processing during second language (L2) learning. The problems that we discuss in this paper are twofold: (1) Assuming psychological variables to be ontological entities without meeting the criteria for ontological reality and (2) Inappropriateness of assessing abilities based on learner’s speaking or writing performance to investigate cognitive processes. By addressing these problems, we argue that some latent variables postulated by observing L2 performance do not exist in reality and emphasize the difficulty of interpreting cognitive mechanisms through performance analysis. We also enumerate some problems that arise from the epistemological perspectives of previous research practice (e.g., the bifurcation of contradictory hypotheses and their indeterminacy). Finally, two alternative approaches treating L2 performance are proposed. The implications of this line of discussion for future research are also discussed.

    Among foreign language teachers and researchers, it has been widely acknowledged that grammatical knowledge of a foreign language comprises two types of mental storage. One of the two, explicit knowledge, is quite likely linked to adjectives such as "slow" and "conscious," whereas the other, implicit knowledge, is associated with words such as "fast" and "unconscious." The present study challenges this conventional and popularized view, by addressing the consciousness and speed dimensions of Japanese EFL learners' (<i>N</i> = 24) knowledge about <i>tough</i> movement. We conducted a grammaticality judgment task adopting two experimental paradigms: (a) a subjective measure of consciousness known as the <i>meta-knowledge criterion</i>, and (b) response time modeling. The participants judged the grammaticality of the stimuli under the two conditions, (a) control and (b) tough movement, and described their mental state during judgments (explainable vs. intuitive) trial by trial. We analyzed the dynamics among the recorded judgment responses, reaction times, and responses on the subjective measure. The results supported the hypothesis that the consciousness and speed dimensions intersect obliquely. This means that unconscious knowledge does not entail faster grammatical performance. Some pedagogical implications, particularly in light of English grammar teaching in Japan, are also discussed.

    This study aimed to develop and validate a scale to measure the Grammatical Carefulness (GC) of foreign language learners. GC, by its definition, refers to psychological, behavioral, and meta-cognitive traits of a learner, and it entails highly controlled, cautious, analytical, and time-consuming language use. By conducting a set of questionnaire surveys targeting Japanese junior high school, high school, and university students (N=2,288), a Foreign Language Grammatical Carefulness Scale (FLGCS) with 14 items, written in Japanese, was developed and tested for its factorial structure, reliability, convergent, content, and criterion validity. The results demonstrated that FLGCS yields three factors: (a) phonological, (b) lexical-syntactic, and (c) pragmatic carefulness, with a high reliability for each. The factorial validity was also supported by using both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Further, a set of analyses confirmed various types of validity. The evidence for the validity is as follows: (a) the linguistic experts (n=10) consistently judged that all the items properly referred to each factor in an appropriate linguistic sense, (b) FLGCS showed correlations with learner beliefs, consistent with theoretical expectations, and (c) FLGCS correlated to the scores of a C-test, and with the time to finish the C-test. The applicability of FLGCS in EFL teaching and research will also be discussed.

    The present study attempted to confirm the validity of the Foreign Language Grammatical Carefulness Scale (FLGCS) developed by Kusanagi et al. (in press). According to Kusanagi et al. (in press), Grammatical Carefulness (GC) is defined as a personal trait reflecting learners’ behavioral and psychological aspects of language use, and it consists of three subscales: phonological carefulness, lexical-syntactic carefulness, and pragmatic carefulness. Although the initial validation concerning factorial, content, and criterion-based validity has been done, the criterion-based validation did not take into account the correlation between the performance focusing on the specific aspects of language use and each subscale under the GCS. In order to examine the validity of the subscales of GCS, this study applied two types of task: a discourse completion task (DCT) and a reading and underlining task (RUT), which are considered to measure pragmatic and lexical-syntactic aspects of learners’ performance respectively. It was found that the two subscales (lexical-syntactic and pragmatic) and the scores of the two tasks were weakly correlated, which means that this study found additional evidence showing the validity of FLGCS.

    By the use of grammaticality judgment tasks in two conditions (untimed and rapid), the present study examined Japanese EFL learners' explicit and implicit knowledge about the countability of common and material nouns. It is well known that Japanese EFL learners exhibit long-lasting difficulty in attaining knowledge of countability. However, previous studies have not taken the explicit/implicit distinction of L2 knowledge into account. Hence, the present research conducted a grammaticality judgment study, targeting highly proficient Japanese EFL learners (N=18). The stimuli consisted of both grammatical and ungrammatical sentences including number agreement errors with two conditions (common vs. material nouns; k=12 for each). The results of a two-way ANOVA (task type: untimed and rapid, by the stimuli type: common and material nouns) clearly revealed that there was a statistically significant interaction between the two factors, showing a large effect size. This suggests that (a) there was no effect of task type on the material nouns, which might lead to the conclusion that the participants were not aware of the countability of material nouns, even as explicit knowledge; (b) the accuracy score of common nouns substantially declined, which means that the countability of common nouns was not fully acquired as implicit knowledge.

    Grant type:Competitive

    Grant amount:\4160000 ( Direct Cost: \3200000 、 Indirect Cost:\960000 )

    しかしながら,webベースの実験構築に取り組み,コンピュータ上で本研究の中核となる実験課題を行うことが可能な環境の構築が完成した。ただし,現段階では実験で取得したデータをウェブ上のデータベースに自動的に保存する仕組みが完成していない。データベースに実験データが保存される仕組みを構築することで,参加者にとっても実験に参加するハードルがさがり,実験参加者募集の段階でのメリットが見込まれる。
    実験構築と並行して,上記(b)の文処理についての研究を国際学術雑誌に発表した。この研究では,学習者が英語母語話者と異なるふるまいを見せた場合に,それが単なる知識の欠如や処理の非効率性ではなく,学習者が持つ中間言語文法知識の影響である可能性が示唆された。また,その知識は実験中にターゲット文法項目に繰り返し晒されることがきっかけとなって活性化する可能性も示唆された。こうした知見は,第二言語の文処理メカニズムを明らかにするための重要な知見となりうると考えている。

    Grant amount:\1300000 ( Direct Cost: \1300000 )

    本研究の目的は,以下の2つの研究課題を心理言語学実験によって明らかにすることであった。
    <BR>
    (a)第一言語では義務的に形態的数素性を標示しない日本語を第一言語とするEFL学習者にとって,英語の形態的数素性と概念的数素性を結びつけることは可能か。
    (b)第一言語では義務的に形態的数素性を標示しない日本語を第一言語とするEFL学習者にとって,英語の形態的数素性と文法的数素性を結びつけることは可能か。
    <BR>
    本研究では,数素性を形態的,文法的,概念的という3つのレイヤーに分類し,形態的なマーカーの有無が文法的・概念的数素性とマッピングされているかを明らかにする2種類の実験を行った。1つ目の実験は,画面上に提示される絵と英文が一致しているかを判断する課題であった。この課題では,英文中の名詞が単数形か複数形かという要因と,絵中のモノの数が単数か複数かという要因を操作した。名詞の数とモノの数の不一致が反応時間の遅れを生むかを分析した。2つ目の課題では,画面上に提示される1語または2語の英語の語数を判断させる課題であった。この課題では,1語であっても複数形の名詞(e.g., cats)や,2語であっても単数形の名詞(e.g., a cat)など,語数と数素性の不一致が反応時間の遅れを生むかを分析した。実験参加者は日本語を第一言語とする英語学習者96名と,英語母語話者32名が参加した。主な結果は次のようにまとめられる。文法的複数性については日本語を第一言語とするEFL学習者にとっても形態的複数性とのマッピングがなされていることが明らかになった。また,概念的複数性と文法的単数性については有標性によって習得が困難である可能性を指摘した。さらに,今後の研究においては有生性という観点も取り入れた研究が行われることによって,数素性のマッピングについてさらなる知見が得られる可能性を示唆した
