  • Plumbing Ethically: A New Pastorate in Ian McEwan's Saturday Reviewed

Ian McEwan’s post-9/11 novel Saturday (2005) has divided reviewers and critics mainly due to its exclusive focus on the complacent elite protagonist, Henry Perowne, who can be described as a Blairite neoliberal, and its use of Matthew Arnold’s ‘Dover Beach’ (1867) as a deus ex machina. Interestingly, Perowne’s complacency endorses Foucauldian ‘pastoral power’, now in the hands of medical professionals, which bears a close parallel to the godlike power of a novelist, a theme explored in Atonement (2001). Indeed, McEwan’s neurosurgeon exercises a form of control over the populace: on the one hand, he guides his patients to live a normal life by removing abnormalities and getting everything in the right order; on the other, he decides who is worthy of receiving further care. McEwan’s analogue between neurosurgery and creative writing consolidates this pastoral power of Perowne, who changes the course of people’s lives as easily as a novelist does. In addition to performing a life-saving surgical intervention for Baxter, he
abuses his power for his personal and emotional ends in determining how this genetically abnormal intruder should live. This essay aims to understand the novel’s exploration of the power of this new pastorate in the era of medicalised politics.

  • The Lawyer’s Scarf, the Banker’s Waning Testosterone: A Most Wanted Man and the Post-9/11 Politics of Emotion Reviewed

Though often pigeonholed as a spy novel, John le Carre’s A Most Wanted Man (2008) provides an insight into the post-9/11 intellectual climate. As if to confirm the author’s place on the political spectrum, the novel unequivocally condemns ‘American justice’ that condones the indefinite detention of Muslims of the ‘suspect’ categories and Britain’s role in creating the political chaos in Chechnya. While reviewers praise it as ‘one of the most sophisticated fictional responses to the war on terror’, critics detect le Carre’s inability to imagine Islam beyond the Western conceptions—Muslims as meek victims, yet staunch misogynists. The absence of a Muslim perspective, however, does not really discredit this novel as an important post-9/11 text. With le Carre’s almost exclusive focus on Western characters, A Most Wanted Man manages to hold up the mirror, cracked as it may be, to the emotional life of the guilt-ridden, educated Western middle class during this time of disruption. Interestingly, the novel ends with Tommy Brue, a middle-aged Scottish banker, putting his arm round the shoulders of a young German lawyer named Annabel Richter. At one level, it signals the defeat of their brands of liberal humanism and left-liberalism as the by-products of guilt, shame and love. Annabel’s idealism does not really save Issa Karpov, the eponymous Chechen refugee, any more than her headscarf, an ostensible sign of her respect for his culture. The story of Brue’s emotional attachment to this young woman comes close to a sentimental scenario of a father’s reconciliation with his daughter. At another level, however, the novel underlines the significance of such personal feelings that at once bind us to moral imperatives and create meaningful connectedness during divisive times.

This project is designed to understand the scope of 21st-century British novels that explore the global civil war, or the never-ending war. While British-Pakistani authors such as Nadeem Aslam and Kamila Shamsie seek to represent the trauma of marginalised people in ways accessible to a wider readership, writers such as David Mitchell produce more imaginative texts that help us envision a post-apocalyptic future. Significantly, both categories of writers address commonly experienced affects such as collective trauma and anxiety of the future threat. These trends at once testify the diversity of contemporary British writers and suggests the increasing importance of affects for those writers.

In this project, I detected two trends in post-9/11 British fiction: return to the belief in Western modernity and disillusionment with the New Left. Mythologisation of 9/11 predicated upon the Western belief in rationality is facilitated by the global disillusionment with the New Left. Interestingly, this provides an antithesis to Jurgen Habermas’ and Jacques Derrida’s debates on terror. The former’s belief in Western modernity is rather eclipsed by the latter’s more sophisticated discussion, whereas post-9/11 British fiction is marked by the revival of such beliefs in Western modernity.
