Conflicts can be a useful means to unite groups against a common enemy. In this sense, both the US Administration and Al Qaeda have not only benefited from the "war on terror", but even share a covert symbiotic relationship. The former won the 2002 and 2004 elections by exploiting the American public's fear of further terrorist attacks, while the latter also benefited from the hatred it was able to generate amongst its followers. The Republican Party's television advertisement broadcast in November 2006 was the first time, however, that their aims could be seen to have converged so overtly. The Systemic Functional approach is employed to analyse the strata of context, semantics, and lexicogrammar. According to this approach, the strata are "semiotic dimensions that intersect in a vast, elastic, semiotic space" (Matthiessen, cited in Lukin, 2006, p. 1) that have a bi-directional relationship of realisation. Lukin asks: "do language users shape the social context, or is our language practice constrained or determined by it?" (2006, p. 8). In this case, the advertisement helped to shape the context, but not in the way that the Republicans intended, because they lost seats in the election to the Democrats.

  • A metafunctional analysis of Sir Winston Churchill’s We shall fight on the beaches speech

This investigation utilised Systemic Functional Grammar to analyse the final portion of a war speech given in 1940 by Sir Winston Churchill the British Prime Minister. A metafunctional approach has been utilised to analyse the taxis, and the experiential, interpersonal and textual meanings. Experientially, this text has the short term goal of preparing the British for the threat of invasion and the long term goal of signalling a warning to the Germans, solidarity with the French, and a call for help from the Empire and America. Interpersonally, although Churchill has the status and social distance of a war leader and despite his use of modals to demand and expect his people to do their duty, this is a very inclusive speech that is designed to unite the population to share his vision. Textually, Churchill uses a common Theme pattern, based on the British people and allies, and introduces the various situations where they can fight in the Rheme as New information. This is therefore a very motivating speech with paratactic extension and hypotactic projection also used to great effect, but the necessary conditions that must be fulfilled and the impending crisis are still included in the Range and some hypotactic clauses of elaboration and enhancement.

Most studies on motivation and translanguaging have focused on learning Global English. This has led to a call for more research into how this lingua franca influences attitudes to languages other than English. We describe Japanese undergraduates who studied English and Chinese in Taiwan during an 11-month study abroad programme. Following a survey of their translanguaging practices in Japanese (L1), English (L2) and Chinese (L3), we interviewed them to explore motivations underlying their language choices. Extending beyond Dörnyei's L2 motivational self system, we used Henry's multilingual self analytical framework. Results indicated that, rather than striving for ideal multilingual selves or settling for contentedly bilingual selves, participants had actual multilingual selves in response to immediate needs and interests. One participant had a contentedly trilingual self period where he could use his three languages socially while delaying further formal study. The other participant focused on his L3 due to intrinsic motivation derived from its proximity to his L1.

    Research reports Kinki University Technical College   21   39 - 47   2005.12

     More details

In order to improve learners' writing competence, two approaches, that is, the process approach and product approach, are well-known. In this paper, however, another approach, the genre approach is introduced. Essay writing based on this approach is conducted in our technical college and the usefulness of the writing class is analyzed. For the analysis, questionnaires were employed. Learners' response can be regarded as positive to the method, because the approach facilitated writing by giving learners the framework within which they could describe their opinions. The effectiveness of teaching methods based on this approach may not end in class activities. After deepening their understanding of this approach, it can be expected that learners will apply it to other genres.

  • How a Seminar for English Teachers Should Be

    Research reports Kinki University Technical College   18   61 - 67   2002.12

     More details

Junior and senior high school teachers often participate in seminars to brush up their English ability. However it is doubtful whether the seminars set up objects that teachers require, and follow a proper procedure to attain the goals. Recently, we conducted a seminar for junior high school teachers in which they learned how to study English in order to improve their own knowledge. The purpose was to think about effective learning methods for teachers. When the three-day seminar ended, we checked whether the seminar was successful or not in attaining the purposes, and the questionnaire results were affirmative. So in this paper, we describe our seminar and discuss how a seminar for junior high school teachers should be. Especially we insist that as they are engaged in teaching, they should study the pedagogical dimension of English and then study English for movies, music, newspapers, and so on. For teachers, studying English education signifies English for Specific Purposes and studying English for the latter areas represents English for General Purposes. We also mention content-based teaching. In our seminar, the purpose was brushing up English ability, but we aimed at its acquisition through thinking about topics in English.
