    Discovery learning is a learning method for acquiring new knowledge and utilizing such knowledge in the real world. As a framework for support discovery learning, several exploratory learning environments (ELEs) have been developed, which aim to acquire and utilize knowledge within such environments. However, some learners cannot utilize their knowledge because it is weakly linked to entities in the real world. Few ELEs aim at using learning to strengthen the connection of the learner's knowledge with real-world entities. In view of the insufficient framework for supporting a discovery learning that links knowledge with entities, this study identifies the cognitive state of errors in the grounding of discovery learning, and internal representations of information necessary to detect such errors in an ELE.

    Writing includes such elements of communication skills as expressing authorial intention in an understandable way that is acceptable to readers. Our research introduces a writing activity that cultivates communication skills by introducing a method for writing novels that are liked by the estimated target readers. An aspect of novels that may reflect individual preferences is the emotional experience produced by them. Therefore, this research proposes a method for creating novels that are liked by target readers from an emotional viewpoint. We first adopt story arcs as a representation of a reader model that expresses the emotional changes that readers are expected to experience from a novel. Second, we define the candidates of emotions for designing scenes from the viewpoint of the emotions of characters. Last, we develop a support system that not only suggests candidates for story arcs and characters’ emotions but also provides feedback when the emotions selected for characters fail to support the selected story arc.

    Writing novels is one of the good trainings for cultivating the 21st century skills. However, some authors, especially beginners, cannot complete writing their novels. This research proposed a supporting method for completing the novels, especially in the phase of deriving the global scenario and the setting from the theme. We have analyzed the types of ideas that are needed to derive the global scenario and the setting, and the questions to focus on such ideas. In addition, based on the analysis, we have developed the support system in which authors can derive the ideas based on the given questions. The system also recommends the sequence of ideas from the derived ones that may form the scenario.

    When writing a novel, authors often create a framework called a plot. However, since a plot’s format is not defined, they must create it by their own styles. If sufficient information for completing a novel is not included in the plot, especially by beginning authors, they might be unable to complete their novels. This study supports beginning authors who are creating plots for their novels. We analyze the items that must be considered in the process of writing a novel and propose a plot-construction model. In addition, we develop a system that support creating plots by introducing a story in the plot-construction model. A story corresponds to the events ordered along a time sequence of the narrative world.

    Historical thinking skill is important in historical learning. Although this overall skill includes various skills acquired through historical learning, this research focuses on reasoning skill. This skill is the ability to apply patterns of historical events to predict future situations. Historical events consist of problem situations, solutions that were found by historical people, and the results. To infer about future situations using historical events, first, we need to grasp the conditions in which the solution in the historical events was applied. Then, we need to compare the conditions with the modern situation so as to find the solutions in the historical events to be applied. The purpose of this research is to propose a learning method to follow the above steps for fostering reasoning skill in historical learning. In our learning method, the learning activity of creating a story based on a historical event is introduced. To create similar or different stories from the historical events, learners need to consider conditions in which to apply the solution in the historical events in detail. Thus, this learning method is expected to improve reasoning skill. We have also developed a learning system to support this learning activity. The experimental result indicated that our learning method is effective for grasping a historical event from an abstract point of view and understanding the condition in which to apply the solution in the historical events.

    Historical events include lessons of good and bad behaviors of human beings that can be readily applied to the modern world. To discover these lessons, one must generalize the basic attributes of multiple historical events, so that one can perceive the underlying patterns that commonly occur. This paper proposes a novel scheme for uncovering the typical patterns that emerge from multiple historical events by generalizing historical characters. We then construct a learning system that supports the generalization and discovery of common patterns based on the proposed scheme.

    Historical thinking is the type of thinking that learns lessons from past historical events and applies them to the modern world. In order to apply lessons, the future situation after the lessons have been applied should be inferred. The future situation has been affected by the causal relationships between people and between properties of the people. In this study, an "if thinking" learning method is introduced so as to understand such causal relationships. In this approach, the change of one historical element is given and its influence on other elements is asked as a question. To answer the question, consider various causal relationships between people and their properties must be considered. In this study, we have also developed a system for presenting "if" situations and judging learners' answers automatically.     The objective of our research is to develop a support system for creating presentation speech, especially speech that explains relations between two slides (complementary speech). Complementary speech is required between slides whose relations are difficult to understand from their contents, such as texts, figures, and tables. If presenters could notice relations between created slides that are recognized by audiences, they would prepare appropriate complementary speech at the right places. To make presenters notice slides where complementary speech is needed, our system analyzes relations between slides based on their texts and visualizes them. Four slide relations are defined and the method for detecting these relations from the slide texts is proposed. Then, analyzed relations are arranged in two-dimensional spaces that represent sequential relation and inclusive relation of their topics. The experimental results showed that most detected slide relations were the same as what examinees understood, and visualization of slide relations was useful in creating complementary speech, especially for less-experienced presenter.

    Recently, researchers from multiple disciplines have been showing their common interest in automatic question generation for educational purposes. In this paper, we review the state of the art of approaches to developing educational applications of question generation. We conclude that although a great variety of techniques on automatic question generation exists, just a small amount of educational systems exploiting question generation has been developed and deployed in real classroom settings. We also propose research directions for deploying the question technology in computer-supported educational systems.

    In collaborative learning, a discussion sometimes comes to a standstill because no comments have been made or no conflicting opinions have been offered. Activation remarks, which might solve such situations using past discussions, may be effective for similar situations. Our research group proposed a framework that applies the activation remarks of past discussions that were stored in a database to ongoing discussions based on case-based reasoning (CBR). To utilize past activation remarks, they should be modified to fit the current situations. We introduce a method for modifying selected activation remarks that contain situation-dependent words about the current discussion especially on remarks that contain words about the remaining time or topics. Our method grasps the time and the topics of ongoing discussions and creates activation remarks by replacing situation dependent words to words of ongoing discussion. Our experimental result showed that our proposed method created valid and effective activation remarks when appropriate past remarks were selected from the only one case-base. (C) 2014 The Authors.     Design pattern is a description of the object-oriented design that gives high-quality and re-usable solutions for frequently occurring problems. A design pattern is formed based on the various experiences of predecessors who made ineffective designs. If students can grasp the design policy of predecessors from the design pattern, they can create good designs and apply them to new problems. The objective of this research is to propose a learning method for understanding design policy of the design pattern and to construct a meta-learning system for proposed learning method.

    Researchers often present their ideas using presentation tools such as Microsoft Office PowerPoint. However, listeners sometimes cannot follow the story and cannot understand what the speakers intend, even if topics are appropriately selected and arranged. Such situations are caused by inappropriate representation of sentences that describe topics. The audience cannot re-organize topic structures based on the descriptions on the slides. Our research is aimed at developing a system that automatically detects differences in the speaker's (or author's) intention for topics and a topic structure that can be estimated from created slides. We focus on a mechanism for automatic estimation of the relationships between slides, especially sequential and inclusive relationships. Relationships between slides can be inferred by the change in focus in the topic structure, and the topic structure is estimated using lexical information on the slides. Therefore, we introduce a topic graph that represents the relationships among topics on slides, which is formed using lexical and layout information of slides. Relationships between created slides are detected by the change in their focused topics in the topic graph. Based on an experiment, we validated the detected relationships with a prototype system when slides mainly consist of typical topics of a presentation and do not contain compound nouns.

    We often present our ideas using presentation tools such as Microsoft Office Power Point. To create an effective slide, authors need to select topics and order them by considering the understanding levels of audiences. We call this ability topic explanation skill. The topic explanation skill is an implicit knowledge and is experientially acquired through the reactions of audiences. However, it is difficult to acquire it as explicit knowledge and utilize it in the activity of creating slides. The objective of our research is to propose a learning method for obtaining topic explanation skill and develop support tools for the learning method. To acquire topic explanation skill, considering the reasons for inappropriateness of a slide is effective. Therefore, we have proposed a learning method that consists of three steps: 1) the author presents his/her ideas using the slide in front of an audience, 2) each audience member (learners of topic explanation skill) modifies the slide as his/her amended version (amendment), 3) learners discuss the reasons for modifying the original slides. In addition, to facilitate learning, we have developed two supporting tools. To support the generation of amendments easily in step 2, a slide reconstruction tool is provided. This tool decomposes the original slide into meaningful parts and provides the grouping and ordering functions for the parts to reconstruct them as a slide. On the other hand, a discussion navigation tool is developed for supporting effective discussion among learners in step 3. The tool analyzes structures of all amendments and points out the parts of the original slide one-by-one as discussion targets. Based on the experiment, the slide reconstruction support tool was able to decompose the slide into an appropriate size of parts and provide enough reconstruction functions to represent amendments. In addition, the discussion navigation tool could indicate appropriate targets that were worth discussing.

    In the collaborative learning in the distributed learning environment, discussion among learners is not always active because of learners' understanding levels or characteristics. Remarks that were triggers of the past active discussion, which is called discussion promotion remark, can also be effective in the current discussion situation whose speech patterns are similar. Thus, the objective of this research is to construct the system which utilizes discussion promotion remarks of the past collaborative learning as advice to solve current inappropriate situation. Discussion consists of various characteristics, so it is difficult to define appropriate speech pattern for each type of discussion promotion remark. This research introduces case-based reasoning approach to extract past discussion promotion remark which can solve current inappropriate situation. In this paper, the structure of discussion promotion remark database and its searching method is proposed.

    When reading a research paper, not only to understand its contents but also to obtain related knowledge is essential. Since knowledge of each student is different, they can acquire related knowledge through discussion with others. However, discussion sometimes falls into the specific topics and students are unable to acquire various knowledge. Our objective is to construct a collaborative discussion support system for promoting effective discussion by visualizing the diversity of discussed topics. If they can notice the discussion situation timely, they may be able to derive different topics. To effectively evaluate a paper, participants should discuss each research aspects. In our research, topics are extracted and discriminated according to the stages by their targets in the paper. In addition, the topics are evaluated from the viewpoints of the similarities between a topic and the paper, and among topics. For expressing the discussion situation, our system visualizes topics (topic nodes) around the core of the circle (section node) which represents stages in the paper. The similarity between a topic and its target section is represented by the distance between topic and section nodes. The similarity among topics is represented by the distance among topic nodes. By organizing topics around the section node, participants can intuitively understand the discussion situation and are encouraged to voluntarily discuss diverse topics. Based on an experimental result, our system can allocate topics appropriately. In addition, participants were able to grasp the discussion situation by observing the discussion visualization.

    Design patterns are good designs in object-oriented programming and are generated experientially by predecessors. We propose a learning method of understanding design patterns by transforming a program with a design pattern into that without one (alternative solution). We also develop a support system that encourages learners of generating appropriate alternative solution. Experimental results proved that the proposed method was effective for a deep understanding of design patterns.

    In the presentation, it is important to compose the presentation slides whose story is appropriate for audiences' interests. For this purpose, the skill for composing an understandable story is necessary. In order to improve the slide composing skill, we focus on the slide refinement discussion in the research group. Participants discuss the points which make the presentation story of original slides unclear. For progressing the discussion effectively, each participant needs to consider the inappropriate story points of original slides as the amendment in advance. In addition, it is important for participants to grasp the differences between original slides and the amendment in consideration of the presentation story. In this paper, we propose two tools for slide refinement discussion: slide amendment making tool which makes it easy for the participant to compose the amendment
    and discussion support tool to visually display the differences of the compositions as discussion points. The experimental result showed that our tools were useful in the process of refining presentation slides. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

    When Chinese students study Japanese, they sometimes find it difficult to understand the grammar of Japanese correctly because Chinese and Japanese use the same Chinese characters in a different way. Our research focuses on the students' exercises of translating Chinese sentences into Japanese, and enables students to acquire correct knowledge based on translated sentences. As for this objective, our Chinese-Japanese translation process is divided into three steps: translation of words, ordering of words, and addition of functional expressions to complete the sentence. The system compares translated sentences written by students with the correct answer preset in the system and specifies the step in which students might be mistaken. Then, the system gives a result of evaluating the translated sentence with the explanation of incorrect translation. Experimental results showed that our system was effective in detecting the mistakes, especially mistakes of words and Japanese functional expressions. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

    With the development of information and communication technologies, learners can easily study with others in the distributed environment. However, it is still hard for them to share interaction with others efficiently because of the limited communication means. In order for learners to study collaboratively with others and immerse in learning, it is important for them to grasp directly the actions occurred in the learning environment, such as making utterances, facing to other learners, writing memos, etc. Moreover, they should observe the collaborative learning environment appropriately according to their focusing intentions. In this paper, we analyze the activities occurred in the collaborative learning environment, and propose a method for detecting focusing intention of the learner. Then, we address the effective view change based on the focusing intention in the collaborative learning environment. From our experimental result, our method of focusing intention could detect 70% of focusing targets of learners correctly. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    In collaborative learning, learners discuss with other learners by exchanging their utterances. In order to represent effective utterances for knowledge acquisition timely, we propose a detection method of focusing utterances which are useful for understanding about their discussion. Focusing utterances are detected according to utterance types and understanding knowledge of learners. Focusing utterances are represented emphatically in the interface so as to distinguish them from normal utterances. Experimental result showed that our method could detect more than 60% of focusing utterances correctly.

    In order for learners to study collaboratively with others and progress effective learning, learning environment should provide learner views that reflect focusing intentions for learners. So far, we have constructed the collaborative learning support interface in which learner views are automatically changed according to learners' focusing targets. In this research, we discuss the detection method of focusing utterances for learners and propose the dynamic display method of exchanging utterances. To detect the focusing utterances of each learner, five types of utterance patterns are defined according to target utterance and utterance target information. Utterances move in the virtual learning environment from the utterers to the target learner of utterances. In addition, focusing utterances are represented in the learner view with different color and display time so as to distinguish them from other utterances.

    Recently, web based collaborative learning is one of the hottest subject. In collaborative learning, not only deriving answer, but also considering various methods is important in order to get the ability to deal with different exercises. Therefore, our objective is to grasp the process of solving answer and specify the derived answering paths, then generate advice to make the learning effectual. In this paper, we focus on the mechanism to grasp the extent of discussion and detect answering methods that students need to discuss about. Our approach is to arrange the answering paths on “discussion-extent projection” based on the similarity among them and detect the answering paths that include different viewpoint than derived one. In addition, we address “divergent tree” which represents whole answering paths with respect to the divergent points among them in order to calculate the similarity.

    学習方略に関わるメタ認知的知識が,深い処理方略と学習の持続性,長期的動機付けに促進的影響を与えることが明らかになっている.一方,その習得に必要な支援は学習者毎の個別性が高い.したがって,特定の短期的な学習文脈で学習者が設定した問いの内容に基づいたメタ認知知識の発見的学びとその適応的支援(ミクロループ)と,さまざまな技術を対象とした長期的な学習実践において習得したメタ認知知識の効果と成長を実感できる学習場(マクロループ)を形成することが望ましい.

    マクロループの実現には,教材開発コストの軽減が必要である.これらを踏まえ,本年度は技術領域の学びに共通する問い概念とその設定行為を学習スキルオントロジーとして体系化した.そして,技術領域(セマンティックウエブ)を対象とした学習方略獲得のためのセマンティクスアウェアな学習教材の検討を行った.

    先行研究で開発したメタ認知モニタリング課題において自身が設定した学習目標の不備(目標化ギャップ)に気づいた学習者を対象として,それを克服するメタ認知コントロール課題としての個別適応的学習教材の開発を行った.この際は,対象レベルの学びからそれを汎化して方略レベルの学びにつなげるための学習教材のデザイン原則を検討し,これに基づいた開発を進めた.教育実践に向けたメタ学習教材の準備を整えた.そして,メタ認知知識の発見的学びとその転移を促す適応的支援モデルの開発に向けた検討を始めた.

    2020年度はコロナウィルス蔓延により,期間内に当初予定していた実験を実施することができなかったため,研究期間を延長し,2021年に終了した.
    2020年度は生物の単元知識を深めるための観察学習において,自然界の実態と結びついた理解の形成を支援するための支援システム,および多様な観察を促進するための支援システムを構築した.
    観察学習では学習者が主体的に活動しながら知識を深めることが望ましく,システムが積極的に学習を誘導することは適さない.そこで,学習者による主体的な活動を促進する仕掛けとして作問学習を導入し,学習者の理解していない植物を題材として作問学習に取り組ませることにより,学習者自身による発見学習への動機づけを行う.本研究課題では,作問させる対象となる植物を特定するため,学習者の理解状態を概念マップ形式で表出化させるとともに,正解の概念マップと学習者の作成した概念マップから,理解が不十分な箇所を同定するための手法を提案した
    一方,多様な観察をするためには対象を多角的な視点で捉える必要がある.本研究課題では,多角的な視点で対象物を捉える方法の一つとして対象物を役割で捉える方法を提案する.対象物の役割は物が単独に存在しているときに与えられるものではなく,他の物が存在しているときに生じる.したがって,他の物を発見してそれと組み合わせることで新しい役割を見出すことができれば,視点が変更できていることとなる.そこで「他の物の発見」と「発見した物から見た対象物の役割の考察」の2つのステップから成る視点の変更方法を提案した.また,対象物として数学の図形を一例として,視点の変更方法の獲得をトレーニングするためのシステムを構築した,

    We developed a matching platform for researches on educational practices and researches on learning support systems according to the objective of this research project.
    We also operated the platform on a trial basis and made improvements based on the results.We analyzed the basic analysis of the descriptions of the needs, seeds, and practices on utilization of learning support systems. The results of the analysis will be necessary for future development of ontologies.

    Focusing on conversational structures that have a certain commonality at the task level, we studied a general-purpose conversational control model. We also showed that the system can generate more diverse conversational scenarios than human-created ones, and that the system can evaluate the level of the generated conversational scenarios. We have also shown that the system can evaluate the level of the generated conversation scenarios. Furthermore, we conducted evaluations by experts in second language education and obtained evaluation results that suggest the usefulness of the system from the perspective of self-regulated learning. These results indicate that the system is capable of generating scenarios that can adaptively control conversation according to the learner's level of proficiency in second language communication motivation.

    Analytical skills are the ability to properly analyze data and to extract and exploit useful findings. Such practical skills are acquired for specific data while repeating a series of analysis processes through trial and error.
    The objective of this research is to propose the analysis methods that are appropriate for the target data, which is effective for fostering analytical skills, and establish their support environments.
    This research focuses on implicit knowledge as target to derive, such as sensitivity, meta-cognition, and usage of English words. Our research 1) proposed environment where data can be analyzed by trial and error, and 2) constructed a system with support functions to promote better trial and error. Through the evaluation experiment using the constructed systems, we clarified the effectiveness of the analysis method and the support method.

    We introduced a prototype system of a visual programming environment into some actual classes, and collected the data including users' evaluation for the system. After that, we developed the system, which offers the functionalities for teaching and learning fundamental concepts in programming. Then, we introduced the system into actual classes in several higher educational institutes, and conducted evaluations.
    The evaluational results shows that the system is highly evaluated from the teachers and students than the prototype system.

    The objective of this research is to support presenters of acquiring the presentation skill. In order to accomplish this objective, it is effective to evaluate components of the presentation such as slides and speech, create audience model which represents understanding situation of audience, and indicate inappropriate components as feedback. For this purpose, three systems are developed: slide generation support system which focuses on slide components, speech support system which analyzes speech factors, and externalization support system which encourage presenters for externalizing and organizing the topic contents. Based on the experiment, our systems were effective for notifying inappropriateness of own presentation components.

    In this paper, we describe a method for developing a learning management system that encourages learner interaction by "the architecture of participation". "The architecture of participation" describes the nature of systems that are designed for user contribution. We developed a learning management system based on SNS (Social Networking Service). Our system models leaner's knowledge and "participatory attributes". Participatory attributes are computed based on learning activities in our learning management system. Our system also recommends other learner's blog entries as "sub-contents" based on the learner models. Sub-contents are constructed of user's entries and some comments for these entries. Our aim is that the recommended sub-contents make learners aware, not only of some yet unknown concepts to them, but also of other users. We describe our experimental system.

    The objective of our research is to propose the learning method for obtaining the topic explanation skill and develop support tools for the learning method. We have proposed the learning method which consists of 3 steps: 1) author presents his/her ideas using the slide in front of the audience, 2) each audiences modify the slide as their amendments, 3) author and audiences discuss the reasons for arranging topics and ordering topics in their amendments. For the purpose of supporting the generation of amendments easily in step 2, slide reconstruction tool is provided. Discussion navigation tool is also developed for supporting effective discussion among author and audiences in step 3. Based on the experiment, our learning method and supporting tools were effective in navigating discussion.

    We propose the" active safe driving support system" which is able to recognize the surroundings/situations and to detect the potential danger automatically. In this development, we have implemented the novel method which detects and localizes other traffic participants such as pedestrians and vehicle, using a probabilistic way to integrate image-feature-based detection and sparse 3D depth information together, under multi-cue model. This method provides fast and reliable estimation of the depth information.

    本研究課題では,協調学習において,学習者の意識に応じた他者の情報取得を支援するインタフェースの構築を目的としている.昨年度は,対象を数学問題に限定し,学習者の視点からの他者の理解モデルを構築するため,ベイジアンネットワークを用いて他者の問題の導出ステップの理解傾向を表現する手法を提案した.
    本年度は,学習者同士が何度も共に協調学習する状況に対処するため,以前の協調学習経験を反映したベイジアンネットワークの個別化手法を提案した.ベイジアンネットワークは,解を構成する導出ステップをノード,導出ステップの順序関係をリンクで表現しており,学習者の導出ステップの導出可能性を条件付き確率値で表現している.個々のノードを表す導出ステップは,一般的な数学の知識を問題に応じて具体化したものであるとみなすことができる.したがって,個々の学習者の一般的な知識に対する理解状態を学習者のドメイン知識モデルとして蓄積し,協調学習時に構築された理解モデルを用いてドメイン知識モデルを特定する.そして,学習者が最後に一緒に学習した時点のドメイン知識モデルを参照して,ベイジアンネットワークの条件付き確率値を設定する手法を考案した.研究室内の学生による評価実験により,提案手法を用いて構築されたベイジアンネットワークによって推定された他者の理解モデルは,学習者の他者に対する意識をより正確に表現しているという結果が得られた.
    次に,構築された他者の理解モデルと,学習者自身の理解状態をもとに,学習者の注目対象者を推定する機構を構築した.学習者自身の理解状態は,学習者の個別学習ウィンドウ中の記述と,問題ごとに設定されたキーワードを比較することで判断した.学習者は自身が理解していない導出ステップを理解している他者に注目することが多い.そこで,学習者の理解状態に応じて問題の導出ステップに重要度を自動的に設定し,学習者の理解していない導出ステップとその周辺の導出ステップをより理解していそうな他者を注目対象者として特定する手法を考案した.また,特定された注目対象者の個別学習ウィンドウを自動的に取得して学習者に提示するインタフェースも構築した.

    Based on the idea that a variety of information useful for realization of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can be extracted from traffic movies, a lot of research efforts have been deveted to develop vehicle tracking techniques using traffic surveillance sequences. However, because of issues in robustness, the tracking techniques are still difficult to be put to practical use. The purpose of this research is to expand the application scope of the vehicle tracking techniques by greatly enhancing the robustness of them.
    In the period of the research supported by Grant-In-Aid for Scientific Research, first we have established a tracking method that integrates low-level tracking process with the high-level tracking process, which enables transformation of target objects to be tracked over time in high-dimensional state space, in Bayes framework to adapt to the influence from rapid changes of lighting conditions and object's motions. By using this method, we have achieved the compatibleness between robustness and real-time execution of tracing.
    Secondly, within above-mentioned framework, recognition mechanism that functions as low-level tracking has been mainly investigated and implemented. This low-level tracking process can not only work individually as a tracker but can also work jointly with high-level tracking process to make the whole system more reliable. Additionally, (1) to keep the robustness of the system even in case of bad weather, night or occurrence of occlusion (because of overlap of vehicle on images), we have developed a method to detect the passages of vehicles based on recognizing road traffic sound taken by a stereo microphones and proved its effectiveness especially for night-image-sequences ; (2) to obtain necessary information in the situation where road-side-infrastructures are not available, we have investigated and developed a method to detect and track neighboring vehicles by using in-vehicle cameras ; (3) to support safe driving, we have developed the techniques to identify and distinguish vehicles and pedestrian at intersections.
    The results related to this research project have been published in several proceedings of international canferences and journals.

    数学問題の解決過程で図形を用いて問題の題意、問題の性質を明示化させ、その解法を理解させる、または解法過程の意味を把握させることは問題の論理的な手順だけを把握するだけでなく、物理的な意味を大域的に理解し、創造的な思考法の育成を期待できる。本研究課題では創造性育成支援の立場から図形が有する問題の具体性、時空間的世界での意味を理解させることを目的として、学習者の解法過程で用いられる図形をシステムが理解し、図形を介して問題解決を図る学習支援機構について対処している。対象とした問題領域は2次関数であり、課題設定の点から問題の特性を明確にし、枠粗みを構成するに適切である。2次関数グラフを構成する直線、点、軸、さらには頂点、切片、交点などのグラフ構成要素に対して内部表現モデルを導入して対応した。この内部表現モデルは図形インスタンスの構造関係を表現しなければならないが、如何に構成するかが一つの課題で、我々は実体関連モデルを拡張して解決した。また、変化するグラフの構成要素間の図形を如何に処理するかが次の課題となる。そのために、ルール・ベースを用いて変形知識を表し、そのルールを内部表現モデルに適用・解釈することにより、解法の各手順に対応する図形操作の内容をシステムが理解するというアプローチを採用した。これにより、解法過程における変形・処理操作を論理的に扱うことが可能である。
    このような解法上の図形操作理解機構の下に、学習者が描いた図形を解釈してシステムで理解できる図形と対比し、図形表現を介して問題の理解、問題解法の理解を支援できる。この枠組みの下にプロトタイプ・システムを開発言語C, Prologを用いて実装した。異種言語系を用いたことは、図形構成要素間の単一化、照合、及びその推論にPrologの機能が有効であるためである。学習者が図形を描くための操作に多少手間取ることが一つの問題点ではあるが、研究目標は充分に達成できた。

Devising educational methods

  • 実験科目では、実験をとどこおりなく遂行させるだけでなく、実験終了後に実験データを見ながら学生個人にいろいろと質問をし、自発的に考えさせるような工夫をしている. 講義科目では理解状態の確認・定着を目的に、毎回の講義の際に講義内容の演習を15分程度行っている.演習中に各自の机をまわってヒントを出すと共に、毎回解答用紙を集めて誤っているところについてコメントを書いて返すようにしている. 演習科目では、旧カリキュラムの単位を落とした10名強の学生を対象とした演習を担当しているが、演習が進むにつれて理解状態の差が大きくなってきたため、演習課題を通常レベルと簡単レベルの2種類準備して、できるだけ多くの学生が達成感を持てるような工夫をしている. 特別研究ではプレゼンテーションを多く取り入れ、研究活動をしながらコミュニケーション能力も養うようにしている.また、学部のうちから研究会に参加するなど学外の人と接する機会を多く設け、できるだけ様々な経験をさせ、多方面から幅広い知識を吸収できる機会を設けるようにしている.
