<p>We aimed to examine the housing status transitions of the people who faced damages caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake affect the self-evaluation of life by victims such as "life satisfaction, life prospects, and social capital". The survey data were obtained from a questionnaire survey targeting the household of temporary housing, recovery housing, reconstruction housing, and housing living before the earthquake in Kamaishi city, Iwate prefecture in the seventh year after the earthquake. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that not only the housing status transitions also the future housing perspective had an impact on the self-evaluation of life. However, the effect was different depending on household annual income.</p>

<p>  In the present study, education on emergency responding after disasters was conducted at 2 elementary schools, in order to teach the students how to predict risks and how to respond in crises. The participants, 281 second graders, studied with multimedia teaching materials which included information about possible dangers when an earthquake occurs in their everyday life, such as on their way to school or while they were sleeping, and ways to protect themselves after disasters. Together with their guardians, they completed homework assignments that considered possible risks when disasters occur when they are on their way to school or in their sleeping area. Because of the young age of the participants, both numerical subjective ratings and free descriptions were evaluated. The results generally confirmed that the children had learned from this experience. The discussion deals with the importance of children learning not only possible dangers relating to disasters, but also ways to protect themselves, and with the importance of learning in cooperation with their guardians.</p>

The purpose of this research was to clarify the characteristics of child's risk perception on earthquakes and to extract the points to be noticed when conducting disaster education at school. Fifth grade elementary school students (N=26) and university students (N=30) were shown the illustration of 4 scenes and asked to describe the potential dangers of earthquakes and the way to protect them in each scene. The result indicated that elementary school children's risk perception were (1) less multifaceted understanding of the situation, (2) lower self-involvement, (3) less consideration of probability and severity of damage than university students. Based on these results, ways to deepen understanding of earthquake risks and way to protect them in class were discussed.

This study developed the disaster education digital material for elementary schoolchildren, and examined the teaching effectiveness of this material. Eighty-five schoolchildren attended the class using this material twice, and did homework with their parents. Before and after the class, they answered the questionnaire to measure their learning effect (attitude toward subjective behavior, motivation toward disaster prevention action in cooperation with parents: both 3 items) and their evaluation of the class (3 items)．The results generally indicated that their attitude of subjective behavior, and their motivation toward disaster prevention action was higher after the education, and their evaluation of class were high. These results generally showed the effectiveness of this material. In future studies, generalizability of these results should be examined.

The Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011 has catastrophic impacts on Japan. Japan is currently on the way to recovery. However, as the damage on the country as well as society is so serious, Japanese society is urged to change some systems including hazard management, energy policy, information systems and city planning. These changes are accompanied with social group realignments, thus necessarily followed by various risks. To cope with these risk issues, SRA-Japan established the special research committee for the Great East Japan Earthquake. The aim of the committee is, from viewpoints of risk analysts, to create and relate messages about risk issues in 2–3 years, in ten years and in thirty years from the earthquake. To do this, the committee garners SRA-Japan members' opinions about possible risks in Japan by using Delphi method. A preliminary survey was operated in 2011. This paper shows the results summarized by using KJ method.

<p>The city of Tagajo built 373 temporary housing units. To support the victims who lives there, the city set up a project in which a staff of 22 is hired by a private contractor to take care of other victims in the temporary housing villages. To assess the effect of this program, we conducted two investigations. The first was an interview survey of the supporting staff to explore the impact their work has on them, both positive and negative. Second, we conducted a questionnaire survey to evaluate GHQ30 and PTGI-J of the victims residing in the temporary housing village, as the beneficiaries of the staff's work. Primary conclusion is that those who feel a familiarity with the staff have a weak but significant correlation with PTGI.</p>

The purpose of this study was to identify the predictors of behavioral intentions of people with high attitudinal ambivalence based on the theory of planned behavior. Although past research indicated that attitudinal ambivalence works as a moderator in forming behavioral intentions, what predicts behavioral intentions of highly ambivalent people has yet to be identified. In the present study, attitudes, subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioral control (PBC), and behavioral intentions with respect to cervical cancer screening were assessed over two time periods for 186 female undergraduates. Multiple regression analyses revealed that attitudes predicted intentions among low–ambivalent participants, while SN and PBC predicted intentions among high–ambivalent. Considering attitudes were stable during the study period, it was suggested that ambivalence attenuates attitudes certainty and thus, attitudes is less likely to affect behavioral intentions relative to SN and PBC among ambivalent people. The relationship between attitudinal ambivalence and persuasion was discussed.

This paper examined how the experts of the clinical trials (e.g, doctor, nurse, and clinical research coordinator) perceive risks, benefits, and costs of the clinical trials. Semi-structured interview survey was administered to the medical doctors (n=6) and the clinical research coordinators (n=6) to clarify their attitudes toward clinical trials. Academic achievement and advance of science were pointed out as benefits of clinical trials by the doctors. In contrast, psychological supports for the patients, such as the trustful relationship between patient and clinical research coordinator and the relief of anxiety about the clinical trial were perceived as benefits of clinical trials by the clinical research coordinators. The problem of the safety of a new medication and the risk of side-effect were pointed out by both doctors and clinical research coordinators.

We examined the effects of attitudinal ambivalence on information seeking. Attitudinal ambivalence reflects the extent to which one simultaneously has positive and negative evaluations toward the attitude object. While some studies report that ambivalent attitudes do not predict behavior, other studies claim that ambivalence promotes the processing of attitude-related information. In this study, we assumed the behavioral decision-making process in which attitudinal ambivalence would drive information seeking and then lead to behavior. In particular, we examined the effects of attitudinal ambivalence on the intentions to seek information and on the actual information seeking behavior. Female undergraduates (n = 240) participated in a longitudinal survey regarding cervical cancer screening. The questionnaire used in this study consisted of structural ambivalence, subjective ambivalence, overall attitudes, intentions to seek information, behavioral intentions (Time 1), and information seeking behavior (Time 2) with respect to undergoing a screening. Correlational analyses revealed that structural ambivalence did not associate with either intentions to seek information or actual information seeking. In contrast, subjective ambivalence predicted intentions to seek and information seeking. We also discussed the underlying mechanisms and further research directions with regard to attitudinal ambivalence and social networks.

This article reviews recent risk management and disaster prevention education in Japan. Risk management education is defined as understanding the features of risk, risk assessment methods, the perception of risk, and risk communication to appropriately govern risks. Disaster prevention education is defined as understanding the effective preparedness and behaviors required for protection against disasters. First, certain fundamental contents and practices of risk management education are introduced. Then, the type of risk literacy required and the means of cultivatinge people who effectively understand risk literacy are discussed. Next, risk management education is effectively addressed using dyadic discussions. In addition, learning tools and practices of disaster prevention education are introduced, and the importance of disaster prevention education focusing on self-efficacy, which is essential to overcome difficulty, is discussed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to clarify the gaps in the recognition of medical terms mainly related to medicines between laypeople and medical practitioners in order to contribute to improving risk communication in the medical care field. <br> Method: A total of 315 laypeople and 211 doctors were surveyed. To examine the gaps between them, we adopted 57 medical terms from the National Institute for Japanese Language and further added 33 medical terms. In total, 90 medical terms were used. <br> Results: For the medical terms group into the &ldquo;Expressed in other words of vernacular speech&rdquo;, the recognition by the laypeople was low and that estimated by the practitioners was high. For the newly added medical terms groups into the clinical-trial-related terms and medical terms related to side effects, the recognition by the laypeople was lower than that estimated by the practitioners. Moreover, the recognition values for above two groups were smaller than the other groups. <br> Conclusions: The gaps between the basic recognition of the medical terms by laypeople and that estimated by the practitioners suggest that the possibility that patients cannot recognize much more difficult terms should be considered.<br>

The present study aimed to revise disaster risk communication gaming tool RisCom (Unagami, Motoyoshi, Takai, & Yoshida, 2007). In a previous study, the authors developed and tested the effectiveness of RisCom in terms of natural disaster risk education, and pointed out the necessity for a better gaming tool that reflects more factors related to natural disaster prevention. In the present study, disaster insurance was implemented into the previous version of RisCom. The game was designed to provide better educational tools for natural disaster risk education, as well as to provide research method for research in the perception of risk and willingness to accept some cost to avoid possible risks (i.e., willingness to pay). A total of 115 Japanese students participated in RisCom II. Individual difference in the risk aversive strategy was observed, and most of the participants evaluated the new version of RisCom as being both educative and entertaining. Participants* interests towards natural disaster insurance increased significantly after playing the game. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group.

A survey was conducted to investigate how self-perception of text-message dependency leads to psychological/behavioral symptoms in relation to personality factors. Japanese high school students completed a self-report questionnaire measuring frequency of text-messages, self-perception of text-message dependency, psychological/behavioral symptoms, extroversion and neuroticism. Self-perception of text-message dependency was composed of three factors: perception of excessive use, emotional reaction, and relationship maintenance. Although message frequency was significantly related to psychological/behavioral symptoms, this effect was qualified by self-perception and personality factors. In particular, self-perception of text-message dependency strongly affected psychological/behavioral symptoms. Importance of distinction between extroverted and neurotic text-message dependency through the process of self-perception of maladaptive behavior is discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. This study examined factors which influence the extent to which citizens prepare for natural disasters. A questionnaire-based survey was administered to residents (N=849) living in the greater Nagoya area. The items were devised to probe for residents' attitudes toward disaster preparedness, perceived flood and seismic risk, their commitment to the community, and concerns about society. The study revealed that both household and community disaster preparedness were affected by the individual's subjective norm regarding preparation, the perceived benefit of protective courses of action, and general concern about natural disasters. Commitment to the community and concerns about society were the only strong predictors of community-based disaster preparedness. By contrast, perceived flood and seismic risks were weak predictors.

The authors developed a new environmental risk education program for secondary education, concentrating on flood disaster. Aim of the program was to provide students basic concept of environmental disaster risk in a science education paradigm, and to gain better understanding in risk communication. The government of Japan bad been trying to prevent disaster by tecbnology, but paid little effort on disaster education program. The necessity for new education program in disaster prevention has been argued for decades, but not much effort had been paid to shift the basic ideology in disaster education. Lectures based on science text books tend to limit students' opportunity of learning essentials in disaster prevention, and their ability to imagine a disaster, as the nature of text books tend to concentrate on surface information. The new education program tried to pay more attention in disaster prevention and risk communication, allowing students to learn basic features in environment disaster prevention and risk perception. Although it had been argued that the level of imagination towards disaster is a vital factor in learning environmental disaster lisks (e.g., Motoyoshi, Takao & Ikeda, 2004), most of the education programs depend on textbooks, which limits students' opportunity to imagine disasters. In the new education program, students were asked to produce a hazard map of their city, to increase the level of imagination towards disaster by estimating the damage. Students then played a game to experience the difficulties of communicating risk related information. Implications for further development of risk education program was also discussed.

Differences between disaster preventive actions and measures taken by the general population, and improvements to the disaster prevention system were compared between Tokyo; where a large earthquake is predicted, and Kobe, where the Hanshin-Awaji (Kobe) Earthquake was experienced in January 1995. A questionnaire survey was conducted with the resident of two districts in Tokyo and Kobe. Results indicated that the sample of residents in Tokyo did not understand how to prepare for disasters, with the exception of refuge management provisions, which were better than in Kobe. In addition, a tendency for not making concrete preparations was identified, despite the worry about the possibility of a large earthquake happening. Moreover, there was a tendency to value local human networks. Finally, the sample in Kobe was more optimistic than the one in Tokyo.

Undergraduates' perception about the situations after earthquake was analyzed by text mining methods. Undergraduates (N=241) were asked to imagine living five years under disaster situation. Principal components analyses were conducted for the keywords data sets of five phases extracted from the textual data of participants' imagination, using text mining methods. The results revealed difficulty for the undergraduate participants to imagine death caused by an earthquake. Although daily lives with their family and friends were imaginable for most of the participants, lives in evacuation center with total strangers were not. Furthermore, the imaginations were biased positively by comparison of the lessons from Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that took place in 1995.

This research investigated the current disaster system at schools, roles of schools at the time of a major disaster, and coordination between schools and Disaster-Preventive Welfare Communities within the school districts through interviews with school principles at Kobe City public elementary and junior high schools. It further investigated the issues and problems of using the schools as evacuation centers for the communities. The research was conducted targeting six elementary schools and four junior high schools within the city of Kobe in August 2003. The results show that the schools acknowledge that their school disaster prevention measures are making progress to a certain extent through individually crafting a disaster prevention manual, establishing a disaster prevention system and receiving support from the government. This was a commonly shared framework among the researched schools. However, divergence in the view about the role of schools as evacuation centers is evident among the three parties - school, government and the disaster prevention community - creating challenges for cooperation. Work regulations of teachers and administrators are different between districts and schools, which make relatively small details such as how to use holidays, handle benefits and come up with the necessary expenses hinder daily local cooperation.

<p>The Simulation Training of Earthquake Shelter Program (STEP ver 0.5) was developed, and the educational effectiveness of this program was examined. STEP presents to participant groups fictional situations such as "a strong earthquake convulsed the whole city, and you have been evacuated to the elementary school", and asks them to discuss what appropriate behavior the leaders of the shelter should take. Sixty-nine undergraduates, and 12 residents in Kobe participated in the simulation. The results indicated that STEP would be effective in education for disaster prevention.</p>

This study examines how flood risk perception and home ownership affect residents' preparedness for floods, focusing specifically on the case of the Tokai flood disaster in Nagoya City, one of Japan's biggest metropolises, in 2000. The greatest rainfall ever recorded in Nagoya City (566.5 mm) occurred on 11-12 September 2000
as a result, a local river burst its banks and flooded the city. A survey was conducted of residents of the affected area in Nagoya City and its adjacent region. The respondents were asked to rate the extent of their experience with, anticipation of, and preparedness for floods before and after the Tokai disaster in terms of taking special measures against floods. The results showed that the degree of preparedness for floods was determined by the level of fear of floods and the amount of damage sustained during the Tokai flood,' especially for homeowners. However, the residents' preparedness did not depend on their anticipation of floods. These findings show that preparedness for floods depends on ownership of a home, fear of flooding, and the amount of damage from previous floods rather than on previous experience with and anticipation of floods.

Cooperation for disaster prevention between local autonomous disaster prevention organizations in Tokyo and public elementary schools were clarified. Interviews were conducted with the principal of three elementary schools in three districts of Tokyo that were designated to be used as shelters, and as bases for rescue operations at a time of catastrophic calamity. Results indicated that the shelters might not be promptly established at a time of a disaster, and that stockpiles of emergency materials were insufficient. Interactions had taken place between the autonomous disaster prevention organization and all the schools, but shelter management training between the school and the local area had not been conducted. The results of this study indicated the need for cooperative events, such as emergency shelter management simulation training and for strengthening cooperation between local resident and the school.

People living in areas where the risk of flooding is potentially high need to accept such risks, and prepare accordingly for floods. The purpose of this study was to examine factors that affected the residents' levels of acceptance of flood risks. A questionnaire-based survey was administered to residents (N=2811) living in the area affected by the Tokai flood disaster of September, 2000. Items were designed to probe for residents' attitudes toward flood risks, acceptance of flood risks, concerns about society, and rationale-based awareness of risks in society. Using structural equation modeling, we found that self-responsibility for flood preparedness and trust in public administrative authorities had a positive impact on the respondents' acceptance of flood risks. We also found that desire to attain zero risk negatively affected the residents' acceptance of flood risk. In addition, we examined how rational recognition of risks in society, and concerns about society affected attitudes towards flood risk.

This study examined the determinants of willingness to participate in a community-based disaster preparedness scheme. The theory of reasoned action (Ajzen & Fishbein, 1977, 1980; Fishbein & AJzen, 1975) was applied as a basic model and was complemented by the factor of concern about disaster. A structural equation modeling was performed to validate this model. The hypothetical model was supported for the data from the residents (<i>N</i>=3036) of an area with a high risk of flood damage. It was clarified that the subjective norm and concern about flood positively contributed to the intention of participating in a community-based disaster preparedness scheme. The perceived cost of preparedness was the inhibitory factor of participating in such a scheme.

A major flood occurred in the city of Koriyama at the end of August 1998, after which a flood control facility project called the Heisei Abukuma River Project was speedily carried out from 1999 to 2001 in the Abukuma river basin, which includes Koriyama. Shortly afterwards, however, Typhoon No.6 hit the city in July 2002 and caused flood disaster.<BR>The purpose of this study is to examine how these disasters affected Koriyama residents' perception with respect to floods. Analysis results given here are based on a questionnaire survey conducted among Koriyama residents.<BR>The results clearly indicate that the city residents are more concerned about inland flooding than levee breaks as a potential cause of floods. They also show that the city residents' evaluation of the Heisei Abukuma River Project relates to their perception of flood risk, and that their evaluations are affected little by the actual experience they have had with floods.

The aims of this study were to focus on the Y2K issue and to examine the effect of social consideration (the degree to which people perceive themselves as a social entity rather than an individual entity, Yoshida et al. , 1999) on perceptions and human behavior regarding this issue. Undergraduates and junior college students (N=254) responded to a set of questionnaires before and after Y2K (2000/1/1). The results were as follows : (1) Although people perceived Y2K-related risks, they didn't take adequate preventive measures against the impending Y2K changes ; (2) An optimistic outlook toward Y2K was negatively correlated with the two risk communication factors of information gathering and need for information from experts ; (3) People with high Social Consideration had high levels of both information gathering and need for information, and they also took more precautionary measures than did people with low Social Consideration. These results suggest that enhancing social consideration is important in order to make risk communication more successful.

The entrance examination for universities involves risk. Sometimes, people call it "examination war" or "examination hell" in Japan. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of risk perception and the evaluation of probability of success on decision making in entering university. Subjects were 121 third-year senior high school students (12th grade). They responded to the following questionnaire item sets twice : personality scales (e.g., achievement motivation), motivation toward entering university, evaluation of performance in the practice examination, evaluation of the likelihood of being accepted into the university of prime choice, extent of thier ability and efforts, and evaluation of the probability of their success in entrance examination. The grades they achieved on the practice exam was available. The results indicated that the students attained high grades attached great importance to the probability of success, and they made a decision based on this probability. Subjective probability of success was evaluated higher by students than the objective probability which was evaluated by the practice trial.

The purpose of this project was to compose an instructional program aimed at experiential learning of pro-social skills and attitudes, with the intent to contribute to the betterment of society. Our belief was that educating students on social psychological knowledge relevant to the following themes would enhance their acquisition of social competence (e. g., interpersonal competence, adaptability to group and society) and a pro-social attitude : dynamics of human behavior, interpersonal relationships, and importance of group and society. This article is a description of the curriculum planned for the purpose, and a report on some preliminary findings on the administration of the curriculum on this ongoing project. Participants were 80 seventh graders in two classes at a middle school in central Japan. A total of 30 sessions were planned for the school year, and a session was conducted approximately once every two weeks. This article shall deal with the first six sessions conducted before summer break.

Social annoyance is defined as any behavior which may bother, annoy, or irritate others, usually occurring between strangers, and it serves solely toward fulfilling one's own personal needs, at the sacrifice of inconveniencing others (Yoshida et al., 1999). The first purpose of this study was to examine the relationship amongst three concepts; Social Consideration (SC), Interpersonal Trust (IT), and Beliefs About Society. The second purpose was to investigate the effect of Social Consideration and Interpersonal Trust toward social annoyance. Undergraduates (N=267) and adults (N=38) responded to a set of questionnaires. The results ware as follows. High SC-High IT persons had a Symbiotic Belief about society, Low SC-High IT persons had an Optimistic Belief, and a Low SC-Low IT persons had Self-Centered Belief. High SC persons tended to be feel most annoyed with rude behavior, and tended to prefer a regulative and symbiotic antidote against social annoyance, compared to Low SC persons.

Social annoyance was defined as any behavior which may bother, annoy, or irritate others, usually occurring between strangers (Saito, 1999; Yoshida et al., 1999). The purpose of this study was to investigate social annoyance from a cognitive perspective. Ninety seven subjects were asked to indicate their attitudes towards seven annoying behaviors and to describe the reasons why they think so. They were also asked to estimate how many people have the similar attitudes to their own. The main findings were as follows : (1) content analyses of the reasons revealed four categories; "self", "others", "society", and "rules"; (2) perception of social annoyance was negatively retated to the references to "self", and positively related to references to "others", "society", and "rules"; (3) perception of social annoyance was positively related to their estimate of the amount of people who similarly feel annoyance.
