We experimentally investigated whether continuous-time cheap talk improves the effort level in a minimal effort game with multiple Pareto-ranked Nash equilibria. In each round of the game, a player freely changes the message before he or she makes decisions, and constantly monitors other members’ messages. We have two results. First, continuous-time cheap talk realizes a higher effort level than does one-shot cheap talk. Second, the group in which every member chooses the maximum effort in the first two rounds eventually achieves an efficient outcome.

In this paper, we examine gender-specific reference-dependent preferences in a trust game experiment. Different amounts of show-up fee and one question eliciting subjects' reference points were used to categorize subjects into three frames-the gain frame, the gain or loss frame, and the loss frame. We mainly found that (i) male subjects are risk-seeking in both the gain frame and the loss frame; (ii) women are not always more risk-averse than men; and (iii) women display other-regarding preferences only when they are in a gain frame. These results demonstrate the importance of taking gender difference and the reference-dependent preference into account together when examining individuals' economic behaviors.

Recent researches have shed light on the effect of cognitive ability on economic decision-making. By measuring cognitive ability applying Raven's progressive matrix test, we obtain two significant results that this effect affects decision-making in two types of experimental ultimatum games. First, the higher the cognitive ability, the larger the amount a sender offers when the offer is smaller than or equal to the half split. Second, the higher the responders' cognitive ability, the smaller the offer they accept, when they accept it or not with the strategy method. This study not only finds new factors that affect decision-making in experimental ultimatum games, but also provides more evidences that cognitive ability influences economic decision-making. We examine how group decision-making affects other-regarding behavior in experimental dictator games. In particular, we assess whether the effects of iterated games differ for group and individual decision-making and whether the difference in decision-making style (individual or group) changes the perception of social identity. We make two findings on group decision-making. First, group decisions become more selfish when repeating the game after changing group members. Second, a dictator group donates more to a recipient group at the same university than to a recipient group at a different university. These findings are not true for individual decision-making.

We examine the influence of different compensation schemes on the exertion of effort in completing differentiated tasks. The first task is assumed to be boring and has no intrinsic motivation, while the second is assumed to be interesting and has intrinsic motivation. The results are as follows: (1) for the first task, effort levels were lower for high fixed pay than low fixed pay and no payment and were higher for low incentive pay than high incentive pay and no payment. (2) Standard economic theory holds for the second task, which predicts that the higher the incentive, the more effort an individual will exert and the greater the performance, on an average. We experimentally examine the effect of multimarket contact utilizing 2 x 2 Prisoner's Dilemma games and a strict discount factor control. We find that cooperation rates when participants play both games simultaneously are lower than or equal to when they play each game separately. This finding suggests that experimental multimarket contact may inhibit cooperation.

We examine the condition that brings the most efficient outcome under the three-person network externality game. examine three conditions: (1) a role 1 player decides one of the payoff structures (one is the stag-hunt game and the other has the same payoff regardless of player's choice for role 1 player and the dominant strategy for role 0 players) in the first stage and in the second stage role 0 players play the game given by the first stage decision, (2) in the first stage role 0 players play although they do not know the payoff structure, and in the second staeg, a role 1 player observes the first stage decision and decides the payoff structure, (3) cheap talk between role 0 players is introduced into the condition (2). The condition that brings the most efficient outcome is the condition (1): deciding the payoff structure first promotes the probability of realization of the efficient outcome.

We conduct dictator game experiments to investigate donating behavior by simultaneously examining the time delay when the donee receives the donation and the individual characteristics of the donor. We show that donations decrease as the time delay rises and that gender, education level, neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and utilitarianism affect donations independent of the time delay.

Using dictator game experiments, the authors investigate the effect on donation of the dictator and/or recipient working prior to the dictator donating. We focus on two issues that previous studies have not considered. First, we examine the impact on donating behavior of a difference in endowment caused by the dictator's work performance. Second, we explore donation behavior when the recipient's work does not yield income or affect the dictator's endowment, but the recipient's work performance is made known to the dictator. Experimental results indicate that donating behavior is affected not only by the dictator working, but also by the recipient working. In addition, donating behavior is affected by income level, as determined by the dictator's work performance, and is influenced by the recipient's work performance, two findings not previously reported. We experimentally study the effect of a third-person enforcement on a one-shot prisoner's dilemma game played by two persons, with whom the third person plays repeated prisoner's dilemma games. We find that when the third person can observe these two persons' play, the possibility of the third person's future punishment causes them to cooperate in the one-shot game. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Recently the economy of local area in Japan has been declined dramatically by the Lehman shock and the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. In order to stimulate the local economy, we propose to issue a new "electronic type of community currency ", which has the character of usual local currency with untouched settlement electronic type card. In 1990's many community currencies started all over Japan, however, some of them have been faced with the problems of currency management and so on. Recently the untouched settlement electronic type cards have expanded rapidly by its convenience with trading of goods services or with using transportation. Our proposal is to use a new type of local currency with the merits of untouched settlement electronic type card and to stimulate the local economy in Japan.

This thesis aims to explain the recent financial problems and try to research the possibi1ity to stimulate the local economy by using community currency. Since the 1980s financial liberalization and globalization have been promoted rapidly,an d a vast volume of money has shifted from one market to others through the computer networks in the world.13;Lieman Brothers Shock which happened in 2008 autumn now influences a serious recession. The monetary policy seemed not to be effective and the outcome of the accelerated competition has led to the difference between the wealthy group and the poor group; especially in Japan the local area has been declining seriously. By analyzing the survey research of community currency, this thesis finally checks the possibility whether the local area in Japan will be able to recover by using community currency.

This paper describes how undergraduates play intermediaries. A series of experiments was conducted to see how subjects play the monopolistic intermediary against given but unknown supply and demand. The results show that most subjects search for the bid and the ask prices that equalise the purchasing quantity with the selling quantity; then, keeping the trading quantity, they adjust the prices to obtain a locally maximum profit. This suggests that monopolistic firms can act as intermediaries even if they are not as informed as they are supposed to be discussed in the market microstructure theory. In addition, we investigate how people cope with ambiguity. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper surveys various economic experiments on institutions. Although there are many economic experiments which focus on institutions, no one has organized these studies from the viewpoint of institutional economics. This paper demonstration finds that the current mainstream of institutional experiments targets the institution as the equilibrium, and that few experiments in economics investigate the institution as the general cognitive equilibrium.

    (1) We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) focusing on how knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases, represented by HIV, can be acquired. (2) We conducted a web-based questionnaire and the web leaflet. We divieded respondents into the leaflet reading and non-reading groups to determine whether increasing knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases and becoming aware of the high number of infections in their generation would lead them to avoid risky sexual behaviors or get tested in an RCT. The results showed that (1) distributing a leaflet describing sexually transmitted diseases and having the participants peruse it for a certain period of time increased their knowledge more than those who did not receive the leaflet, and (2) knowledge increased only among young women, but did not lead to behavioral change.

We found that when a participant makes a decision alone, what factors we should take into account to eliminate differences in the university affiliation of the participant's participation. Specifically, we found that the gender, age, faculty affiliation, and level of cognitive power of the experimental participants needed to be taken into account. For example, the difficulty of entrance examinations differs between universities A and B, and the experimental results are different between the two universities when compared as a whole, but when the above factors are taken into account in the analysis, the difference in results between these universities becomes less statistically significant. However, when regions were far apart, these factors were sometimes not enough to erase the differences between the universities.

What redistribution was considered to be fair is studied in the laboratory in Japan and China. Experiments were designed by the economist's viewpoint and the philosopher’s: it was examined what redistribution was considered to be fair by the interested parties and by the third parties. Subjects (students), who acted interested parties or non-interested re-distributers, were asked their opinions “what redistribution do you think fair?” and their guess at other subjects’ opinions “what redistribution do you think others would think fait?”. A noteworthy finding, which was observed in every scenario, is that most subjects answered, whether it was the case or not, either that their opinions would be shared by all or that their opinions would be shared by a majority.

In this research, we analyzed the property of social norms and market norms through economic experiments. First, we found that the relationship between labor and social norms / market norms depends on the nature of labor and work, i.e. whether or not the work itself is interesting. We also analyzed the influence of people’s reference point dependent preferences on normative behavior and risk attitude by conducting trust game experiments. As a result of this experiment, the following was found. 1. Men are risk lover even in the gain frame and the loss frame. 2. Women are not always risk averse than men. 3. Women indicate altruistic preferences when in the gain frame.

This study conducts three kinds of experiments and investigates the condition wherein a person makes more effort to get a good result. First experiment focuses on the situation that a pair of workers work multiple jobs. Second experiment focuses on the situation that a third person observes the level of the effort by other two workers. Third focus on the tournament wherein workers compete to get a higher post. The below is the experimental results: (1) it is difficult to cooperate in all the works in the first experiment. (2) When a third person works with other two workers in the future, two workers cooperate. (3) There are some people who make much larger effort to win the competition and some other people drop out from the competition without making any effort.

Under the multi-task situation where a worker has his own task and the help for his colleague, we test how the difference of wage scheme effects the allocation of effort between the two tasks by the experimental study. One of the wage schemes is the pay for performance (relative payment scheme) and the other is the seniority payment (equal payment scheme). Moreover a manager decide both the share of wages in the value added and the wage system. The result is that the manager prefers the pay for performance scheme which brings more payoffs to him, whereas it does not to the workers.

"Easy Economic Experiment System (E3)" has been constructed, which is a web-based system for easily conducting economic experiments by using mobile phones.
We compared the average score of the post-quiz among three treatments; the experimental treatment in which students participated in the economic experiment for strategic form games after the short lecture for the introductory game theory, the observing treatment in which students looked on the experiment, and the lecture-only treatment in which students left the class after the lecture. This paper showed that the score of the experimental treatment and that of the observing treatment are significantly higher than that of the lecture-only treatment. Moreover, students' decisions in the experimental treatment were compared with students' decisions in the observing treatment in this paper, but the difference of two distributions was not significant. This fact suggests the validity of experiments using E3.

We obtained some theoretical results, such as, the condition under which vitalization of the SNS occurs. On the other hand, from our experimental results, we confirmed that the specific point system which we constructed is effective for vitalization of SNS, and that long-term relationship can induce cooperative action between people with short-term relationship. Moreover, by survey we investigated the connection between activity in SNS and ordinal human relationship.

The purpose of this research is to quantitatively investigate the actual effect and function of"the pay for performance"management in Japanese firms. Our investigation methods are questionnaire survey and experiments. The former survey revealed what indexes is used to evaluate the workers, how those indexes are utilized to reward them, and how much the resulting differences in payments are. Regarding the later experimental analysis, we confirm that workers receive a right incentive to invest their efforts into the firm specific training if they are offered a chance of getting promoted to the more productive job with the higher wage. In addition, we have run a preliminary experiment on workers' choice between their own effort and help effort within the context of multi-task in a team production.

This project designs and examines combinatorial auction protocols which are(almost)robust against a variety of cheatings on the Internet.
We focused on a data transfer on ad hoc networks, such as P2P networks and distributed sensor networks. We first show that existing auction protocols are influenced by false-name manipulations. More precisely, an owner of nodes can pretend that a node is in fact a set of multiple nodes, or all of which must be purchased from different owners. We proposed and analyzed a false-name-proof mechanism, where an owner may have multiple elements. We presented those results at WI- 2007
On the other hand, we developed the Agent-Community-based Peer-to-Peer Information Retrieval(ACP2P)method. This method uses agent communities to manage and look up information of interest to users. An agent works as a delegate of its user and searches for information that the user wants by communicating with other agents. We presented those results at WI-2007
In addition, we conducted multi-agent simulations and subject experiments in recycle markets, monopolistic intermediary markets, and so on. Though those results depend on a specific market situation, we extended subject's decision-making models and successfully reproduce subject behavior in the multi-agent simulations. Also, we presented lots of papers in false-name-proof auction protocol and cooperative games in journals and conferences.
Finally,as an integration of our results,we study automated mechanism design,as a mechanism design technique, for new mechanisms on the Internet Mechanism has traditionally been designed manually for classes of problems. In automated mechanism design,a mechanism can be automatically designed using constrained optimization technique. Our results are expected to develop and examine more rapidly and better mechanisms for actual human and massively multiagent systems.
