    Abstract

With advances in artificial intelligence (AI), many language teachers have started exploring the classroom implications of AI-powered technology, including machine translation (MT). To examine the usefulness of MT technology in writing instruction, we conducted a mixed-methods study comparing two types of written feedback: comprehensive direct Teacher Corrective Feedback (TCF), and MT feedback. Participants were 23 Japanese university students in an intact L2 writing classroom. Sample size adequacy was confirmed through a priori power analysis. Participants were instructed to describe a picture prompt in L2 English and then in L1 Japanese. Half the participants received first TCF then MT on their L2 English text, while the order was reversed for the other half. Participants in both conditions were then asked to study the feedback and describe the same picture prompt without the feedback. In the following phase, both groups completed the same tasks in reverse order. Participants also responded to a survey exploring their engagement with the feedback. Results reveal that: 1) TCF improved complexity; 2) MT improved accuracy and fluency; and 3) variation in outcomes may be explained by the different ways in which participants engaged with both TCF and MT. Implications for appropriate classroom use of MT are discussed.

This paper introduces a novel online vocabulary profiling application called the New Word Level Checker (https://nwlc.pythonanywhere.com/) and word list resources used by the application. First, the rationale for developing another web vocabulary profiler and the word lists included in the application are described. Next, the lexical units (i.e., how words are counted) and rules (e.g., case sensitivity, contractions, abbreviations with periods, hyphenated words, and compounds) employed in the application are explained. Then, the word lists adopted for the application are compared to show which lists are best used for different purposes. Pedagogical implications of the use of the application and word lists are discussed, especially focusing on matching learners with vocabulary-level appropriate tests.

The knowledge about affix plays a vital role in the development of word knowledge and vocabulary acquisition. A test for diagnostic information on the level of affix knowledge would be useful in order to inform the test users of what learners have gained or lacked in this integral component of vocabulary knowledge. This paper reports the development and evaluation of a computerized adaptive testing (CAT) version of the Word Part Levels Test (WPLT), created by Sasao and Webb (2017). The CAT-WPLT was developed to maximize further the effectiveness of the WPLT as a diagnostic test. It was administered to 760 Japanese university EFL (English as a foreign language) learners. The evaluation was based on the comparison of measurement accuracy with the fixed-item version of the WPLT. The results show that the CAT-WPLT can provide test users with diagnostic information on test-taker's strengths and weaknesses in affix knowledge with smaller number of items and with the same or greater precision than the previous versions of the WPLT. Pedagogical implications for using the CAT-WPLT are discussed along with issues in utilizing computer adaptivity.

This study adopts Oxford's (2017) definition of language learning strategies (LLS) framed by self-regulation theory and explores the longitudinal development in the use of three second language (L2) writing strategies (global planning, local planning, L1-to-L2 translation) by Japanese university students as it interacts with cognitive, affective, and environmental variables. The study is innovative in its use of a comprehensive, theoretically supported definition of LLSs, a long observation period, and its use of an explanatory sequential mixed methods design. Mixed effects modeling, which provides the main statistical analysis, enabled us to simultaneously investigate the participants’ strategy use at both group and individual level while relating these findings to the participants’ emic data from a self-regulation perspective. The results reveal that (a) developmental trajectories in LLS use were differentially affected by other cognitive and environmental factors at both group and individual level, (b) the self-regulation perspective was useful in explaining the systematicity and individuality observed in the developing use of the three strategies, and (c) students’ motivation related to study abroad experiences may be a key factor in understanding such trajectories.

This study investigates 3 unexplored issues regarding Second Language (L2) Motivational Self System theory. It further validates the theory using multiple structural equation modeling (SEM) along with a procedure comparing the strength of corresponding paths. Japanese university freshmen (N = 2,631) responded to a questionnaire and took the TOEFL-ITP test. Results showed the following: (a) Stronger Ideal and Ought-to L2 self visions led to intended effort, accounting in turn for higher levels of objectively measured proficiency. (b) Two types of learner beliefs reflecting L2 learning experience—Communication Orientation (the tendency to value extensive use of language) and Grammar–Translation Orientation (the tendency to value learning grammar explicitly)—influenced the 2 future selves differently. The former affected Ideal self more than Ought-to self, while the reverse was true of the latter. (c) Women's greater tendency to value communication activities influenced their stronger vision of Ideal L2 self. A stronger link between Grammar–Translation Orientation and Ought-to self in male students than in female students was found. Finally, the etic approach using SEM allowed for a comparison of studies conducted in different sociocultural contexts, showing stronger motivating power for Ought-to self in Japan along with gender differences, a finding with context-specific explanations.

With advances in information and computer technology, genre-based writing pedagogy has developed greatly in recent years. In order to further this growth in technology-enhanced genre writing pedagogy, this study developed a data-driven and theory-based practical support tool for writing research articles. This web-based, innovative tool, powered by a combination of rhetorical moves and lexical bundles, has an autocomplete feature that suggests the most frequent lexical bundles in a move within a research article section. This innovative web-based tool was developed based on the proof of concept of the bundle-move connection approach. Preliminary user feedback was positive overall, and it was found that the writing support tool brought about beneficial effects that genre-writing pedagogy explicitly aims to achieve. In light of these findings, pedagogical implications of the tool are discussed, with particular focus on the potential role that it could play in the teaching and learning of technology-enhanced genre writing.

This study examines the relationship between one type of data-driven learning (DDL) and inductive deductive learning styles. Participants were 145 Japanese university learners of English as a foreign language, all of whom showed significant improvements in a grammar test after teacher-led guided DDL induction. Data were collected using a questionnaire on inductive deductive learning styles and DDL task values. Weak correlations were found between the inductive deductive continuum of learning styles and the DDL task value, but no differences in magnitude were found from an examination of the confidence interval for the two correlations. These findings indicate that depending on the type, guided DDL-type induction may be beneficial for both deductive and inductive learners irrespective of their learning styles. The paper concludes with suggestions that future DDL studies should carefully define the construct of DDL and explore its relationship with learner characteristics. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. In spite of researchers' and practitioners' increasing attention to data-driven learning (DDL) and increasing numbers of DDL studies, a multi-item scale to measure learners' attitude toward DDL has not been developed thus far. In the present study, we developed and validated a psychometric scale to measure learners' perceived preferences and benefits of DDL for research and pedagogical purposes. First, we created an item pool by referring to open-ended responses from learners; second, the items were pilot tested with target-level learners of English as a foreign language; and third, with item analyses and exploratory factor analysis, the revised version of the questionnaire was prepared. Finally, the questionnaire was administered, and its psychometric properties were examined with confirmatory factor analysis and fit indices. The final phase also included a measure of task values to explore the convergent evidence of the construct validity of the proposed scale. The results suggest that the scale is a valid measure of learners' attitudes toward DDL, with the hypothesized model providing a good fit with the data. We propose that the scale can be used in future studies that utilize the same type of questionnaire research to facilitate further investigation of DDL. Suggestions for further research are also provided.

In this article, we suggest that using R, a statistical software environment, is advantageous for quantitative researchers in applied linguistics. We first provide a brief overview of the reasons why R is popular among researchers in other fields and why we recommend its use for analyses in applied linguistics. In order to illustrate these benefits, we report recent works and developments in quantitative data analysis seeking to move the field toward more appropriate practices, many of which take advantage of the flexibility and functionality of R. Finally, in order to facilitate the use of R, we also introduce an R-based web application developed by the first author.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the quality of statistical testing in foreign language teaching research in Japan. We reviewed t-tests, X2-tests and ANOVAs reported in the articles published in Language Education & Technology (LET) from vol. 38 to vol. 49, and calculated the post-hoc statistical power of each test. The findings of the present study were summarized as follows: (a) the sample size of most of the studies in LET ranged from 20 to 60, (b) the median of the effect sizes (in the case of t-tests) showed middle to large levels (d = 0.40–0.80), but (c) the statistical powers of many studies signified severely low levels (almost the 80% of the two-sample t-tests failed to show the statistical power greater than .80). The tendencies were quite likely to have originated chiefly from the inappropriate designs of the experiments or surveys, especially, mismatches between the targeted effect size and the actual sample size. We assert the importance of setting proper sample sizes based on a priori power analysis and precision analysis.

Researchers, especially in the field of educational psychology, have argued that self-efficacy plays an important role in self-regulated learning. As such, teaching of self-regulated learning often focuses on enhancing self-efficacy. However, few studies have examined how the process of self-regulated learning might lead to the enhancement of self-efficacy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the self-regulated vocabulary learning process on self-efficacy. A total of 303 learners of English as a Foreign Language from two universities participated in the study. They completed a questionnaire measuring the process of self-regulated learning (i.e. forethought, performance or volitional control, and self-reflection). They also completed a vocabulary test as a measure of learning outcome. Correlation analysis was employed to evaluate the relationships between various variables investigated in the study. The results showed that self-regulated learning process can boost self-efficacy and increase vocabulary knowledge. The pedagogical implications of the current study are discussed mainly in terms of incorporating instructions aimed at enhancing self-efficacy and self-regulation in vocabulary teaching. © 2013 Taylor &amp

This article explores the cerebral mechanism of reading aloud activities in L2 learners. These activities have been widely used in L2 learning and teaching, and its effect has been reported in various Asian L2 learning contexts. However, the reasons for its effectiveness have not been examined. In order to fill in this gap, two studies using a brain-imaging technique, near-infrared spectroscopy, were conducted in order to determine a cerebral basis for the effectiveness of reading aloud activities. Study 1 investigated learners with high L2 proficiency to show the difference in cerebral activation between L2 and L1 learners as they read a passage aloud. The effect of material difficulty was also examined in this study. Study 2 then examined learners with both high and low L2 proficiency to show the effect of material difficulty vis-à-vis the learners' L2 proficiency. The effect of repeated reading aloud activities was also investigated in this study. These studies show that:Reading aloud in L2 results in a higher degree of cerebral activation than reading aloud in L1.Reading material beyond learners' L2 ability aloud results in low brain activation.Repetition of the same normal reading aloud activity in L2 does not necessarily increase (or decrease) the level of cerebral activation. However, including a repetitive cognitively demanding reading aloud activity does cause high brain activation. On the basis of these findings, this article provides a cerebral basis for the effectiveness of reading aloud activities in L2 learning. © 2012 The Author(s).

This article reports on an adaptation and validation study of SRCVOC (self-regulating capacity in vocabulary learning scale; Tseng et al. 2006) in a Japanese EFL setting. The piloting phase revealed that factor structures were different from those in the original study. The main study, including a self-reported measure of procrastination to explore the convergent evidence of the construct validity, suggests that the scale can be a valid measure of self-regulation capacity in vocabulary learning in a Japanese EFL environment. These findings provide implications for future studies that utilize the same type of research paradigm.

This study examined the effectiveness of explicit instruction of vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) over a 10-week semester with a group of 146 female EFL learners from two Japanese universities. A vocabulary test and questionnaires on VLSs and motivation were administered at the beginning of the course. The learners were divided into two groups based on the vocabulary test results: an experimental group and a control group. Only the experimental group received explicit instruction on VLSs in combination with their regular language lessons. The same instruments were re-administered at the end of the course to examine the changes in both the questionnaire responses and test scores. Qualitative analyses were also conducted to explore the findings in detail. The results show that the experimental group outperformed the control group in the vocabulary test. It was also found that (1) strategy training was effective for both changing the repertoire of strategies used and improving their frequency of use, (2) the training increased the use of certain strategies more than it did for other strategies, and (3) different types of learners exhibited different responses to the strategy instruction. This study's findings contribute to a better understanding of strategy instruction in general and VLSs in particular.

This paper aims to highlight the problem of multiple significance testing with several dependent variables (i.e., items or tests). In many research. papers, researchers report the results of multiple significance testing without realizing they are committing Type I error, in which it can be erroneously concluded that there is a statistically significant difference, when in fact there is no statistical difference. In order to address this problem, a series of Monte Carlo simulation studies were carried out. Five artificial sets of dependent variables for two groups of subjects were generated in the simulation. Three types of data sets which varied in their degrees of intercorrelations (r=.00, r=.50, r=.95, respectively) were then compared. The results indicate that multiple significance testing, with several dependent variables, inflate Type I error, and thus caution should be exercised to control the experimentwise error rate. Implications for the strategies for controlling Type I error rate are then discussed.

So far this KAKEN-funded research has resulted in the creation of the freely available self-marking meaning-recall (L2 to L1 translation) vocabulary levels and size tests (vocableveltest.org). The sites has been used by over 400 teachers, and over 10,000 test takers. Data from 500,000 responses has been collected. Once enough data is collected for stable difficulty estimates, this data will be used to create and CAT vocabulary levels test. The self-marking meaning-recall site was used in published research that investigated the accuracy of elf-marked responses. It was found that self-marked responses were 97 to 98% similar to human marked meaning-recall responses. The self-marking meaning-recall site has been promoted in one journal article, and numerous research presentations. Validation studies of meaning-recall test data collected from the site are currents under review. The self-marking meaning-recall site has been used in research presently under review with an internal journal. The test site is used in teaching as well as research. The testing site is used by teachers to (a) establish learners' lexical reading level so they can be matched with lexically appropriate materials, and (b) to measure student's lexical development over a semester or academic year. Work has started on a parallel Spanish test project.

    海外で一定期間を過ごす「留学」は近年急速に大衆化してきた。しかし、その効果の研究の大半は、話し言葉の発達への影響の量的研究に集中しており、IT勃興とともに重要度を増してきた「書く力」への影響は、筆者らの研究を除いて国内外にほとんどない。又、筆者らの研究においても、動機づけや書くプロセスへの影響にのみ焦点をあてており、異文化共生力への影響や、多言語主義アプローチで対象となる第3言語能力への影響は調査対象としていなかった。本研究では、このような点を背景に、3年間で次の4つの学術的な問いに取り組む予定である。 (1)第1、第2、第3言語ライティング力は留学前後でどのように変化し、相互に影響を与えるか。 (1)言語以外の能力や資質は、留学前後でどのように変化し、相互に影響を与えるか。 (3)目標言語である第3言語ライティング力の向上に最も影響するものは何か。 (4)当該の留学は、参与者の将来にどのような影響を持つか。
    <BR>
    2020年度は、(1)から(4)の目的に答えるため、対象参与者が大学1年後半に在学時(11月)と、中国語圏に留学し帰国した直後(9月ごろ)に関連データを収集することを計画していたが、新型コロナウィルスの世界的な蔓延のため、対象となる大学が留学制度自体をキャンセルしたため、データ収集ができなかった。
    そのため、主に2019年度に収集した試行実験の結果をもとに、リサーチクェスチョンに答えるために最も最適なデータ収集方法を模索した。具体的には、共同研究者と協議したり、外部の研究者を招いて2019年度に収集したデータを精査し、信頼性と妥当性の低い変数を削除したり、最先端の研究で使われている変数を加えることを決定し、本実験で使用する変数をほぼ決定することができた。

    本研究の主な目的は,効率的な外国語教育を推進する指導法の一つとして,教育用パラレルコーパスに基づくデータ駆動型学習(Data-driven learning:DDL)支援サイトの高度化と教育応用をめざすことである。当該目的を遂行するために,平成21年より10年間,開発・公開してきた,日本人英語学習者を主な対象とするコーパスと検索ツールを搭載したオープンプラットフォーム「教育用例文コーパスSCoRE(The Sentence of Remedial English)」の第5次開発を完了した。平成30年度は以下の3点の研究を行った。
    1)教育用コーパスの改訂と増強: SCoREの第4次開発版(平成29年度改訂版)の例文(10,500文)の見直しと改訂を行い,新規にトピック別例文5,170文とその日本語対訳文を追加した。
    2)DDLオープンプラットフォームの高度化:多言語化を図るため,英・日パラレルコーパスに加えて,英語・中国語,英語・スペイン語のパラレルコーパスを収録した。さらに,英語音声読み上げ機能を追加して,最終的に「SCoRE第5次開発版」(http://www.score-corpus.org/)を公開した。
    3)DDL実践とDDLの普及活動:パソコンを使用したSCoREのDDL実践に加えて,SCoREの携帯端末版ツール(http://mobile.score-corpus.org/)の教室での使用を開始した。DDLの普及を図るため,DDLに興味・関心のある教員・研究者で構成されるDDL SIG を組織し,一般公開の第一回DDL SIGシンポジウムを早稲田大学大隈記念講堂小講堂にて開催した。
    研究成果として,2件の国際学会と7件の国内学会において発表を行い,8件の雑誌論文を公刊した。

In the midst of the growing demand for increased international competitiveness in various academic fields, the ability to write about research results in English is a key factor in each discipline. However, there are various constraints and limitations to the teaching of English writing for specific disciplines in the classroom. Therefore, we have developed and been using an English academic writing support tool as a supplement to their instruction in and out of the classroom. The present study aimed to improve and extend this tool, and to develop teaching methods and materials that utilize the tool. Specifically, we (1) added more disciplines and ragged research papers, (2) improved the tool, and (3) used the tool in and out of the classroom. The results of our research have been published in papers and at international conferences.

In order to implement and promote successful data-driven learning (DDL) in multilingual foreign language classrooms, we have conducted a series of studies and developed several tools and materials for DDL. Through these studies, we have been able to identify specific L2 English grammar areas with which Japanese university students have the most difficulty and have created an original corpus to use as a remedial learning tool in L2 classrooms to target those areas. The tool, called the Sentence Corpus of Remedial English (SCoRE) (http://www.score-corpus.org/), is free, web-based, multi-lingual, and open-platform, and contains additional corpus tools and DDL materials. A series of studies have been undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of these various tools; findings show gains in grammar proficiency as well as favorable feedback from users. We hope they may have a broader use for EFL students of other languages.

The current study aimed to explore a teaching model for autonomous/self-regulated vocabulary learning by incorporating a self-regulated learning approach. It also intended to propose a better model for instructing self-regulated vocabulary learning. By reviewing the literature, the relationship between self-regulated learning and self-efficacy was examined. Based on the suggested model, teaching practice was carried out to test whether the model was pedagogically effective or not. The results showed that the treatment group showed a steady increase in self-efficacy and vocabulary knowledge compared with the contrast groups. The findings from the current study provide empirical evidence suggesting that through a self-regulated learning approach, it might be possible to enhance self-efficacy, which in turn may contribute to the development of vocabulary knowledge.

Through the use of a brain-imaging technique called NIRS (Near-Infrared Spectroscopy) or Optical Topography, this study empirically established the cerebral basis of language learner strategy use postulated in Macaro's model (2006), showing working memory is a core component of its use. Our study then proved that, in considering"cognitive load"of language learning, we should take into consideration the relationship between the appropriate use of learner strategy and the difficulty level of materials to be learned. Based on these findings, along with an emerging theory of self-regulation (Zimmerman & Schunk, 2001), we rendered a theoretical model regarding language learners, thereby providing pedagogical implications for"learner training,"a new concept expected to replace traditional"strategy training". In addition, the current study produced some methodological implications concerning the use of mixed methodology, effect size, and statistical power, all of which are relatively new concepts recently introduced in the field of applied linguistics.
