This study examined the survey paradata, which mainly means data about the survey process obtained in the administration of surveys, for the purpose of improving the quality of survey operation by using this information. We also discussed the methods for evaluating nonreseponse bias which could be caused by low response rates, and methods for adjusting for the bias. Survey modes included in this study were traditional face-to-face interviewing with paper questionnaire, self-administered questionnaire, telephone interview by RDD, Web surveys and on-site smart-card record of visitor's behavior. By analyzing the visit record in interviewer-mediated surveys and call record of RDD surveys, we can understand the interviewer behavior more precisely and we can make use of these findings in interviewer training. By analyzing paradata such as response time in CAPI survey or Web survey, we can deepen our understandings on the respondent behavior.

The main objective of our project is to investigate peoples’social values and attitudes in the Asia-Pacific region in order to facilitate peoples' mutual understanding for the peace and prosperity in th eworld. We have carried out "the Asia-Pacific Values Survey," under our paradigm of cross-national survey research called "Cultural Manifold Analysis (CULMAN)." Based on rigorous statistical sampling theory, the face-to face survey was conducted to cover Japan, USA, China [Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong], Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, India, and Vietnam.

This study examined the characteristics of mail survey, which becomes more important in circumstances of social survey in contemporary Japan. Specifically, we compared the results of two types of administration condition : one is to secure the anonymity of the respondents, and the other is not necessarily to do so. We also compared the results of these mail surveys with that of other survey mode, such as face-to-face interviewing. Differences between two administration conditions of mail survey were smaller compared to those among different survey modes.

With the possibility of use in future international comparative projects in mind, we conducted mail and web surveys in certain geographically restricted regions in Japan under a carefully designed, systemic research plan. Our aim was to locate the underlying mental structure of Japanese people with regard to such things like visceral religious feelings and sentiments within the context of everyday life and the values that support it. We applied the perspective of the Cultural Linkage Analysis in analyzing the data, being cautious in accounting for any possible bias stemming from the low response rate in the mail survey and from the variability among respondents across the web surveys whenever possible. Across the data sets that we comparatively analyzed, we found that variations in responses to the items related to the underlying mental structure such as visceral religious feelings were smaller than those observed for attributs and differences in the patterns of IT use ; we were able to obtain useful insights for future research from the patterns in which these variations emerged.

The four surveys, Japan face-to-face survey, USA telephone survey, Japan telephone survey, South Korea face-to-face survey were conducted so that this cross-national comparative research can use two modes, face-to-face and telephone. The results found some viewpoints about survey methods and the attitudes of the people who will develop the nonprofit sector in each country.

The third survey in the framework of a longitudinal sociolinguistic study, was conducted in 2008 in Okazaki City, Aichi Pref., Japan, following the previous surveys conducted 35 years and 55 years earlier. The survey aims to answer the following questions ; How has the usage of honorific expressions changed in the city over a half century? What are the conditions of changes in the use and awareness of honorifics?
We observed explicit changes, such as a decrease in use of honorifics in private family settings and an increased awareness of switching and suiting one's honorific expressions to the listeners or the referents. On the base of the data obtained from the surveys, we have revised and extended our databases for the longitudinal sociolinguistic studies on the honorific expressions in Japanese language. -

This project carried out cross-national comparative survey of East Asia, USA, Australia and India by face-to face interview, based on statistical sampling. The questionnaire covered people's attitudes, opinion and values as to interpersonal relationships, nature, life, religion, et al. This East Asia Values Survey (EAVS) has clarified various aspects, including the interaction between national character and political regimes. Among others, it confirmed the universal social value on "the family."

The purpose of the present study was to propose a method for making a weight variable to adjust for the covariate distribution when mixed-mode surveys were administered simultaneously on different subsets of population. We also apply our method to real survey data to discuss its utility. Specifically we pay attention to comparison of survey by mail or face-to-face interview administered to probability samples and web survey administered on non-probability samples. We use the latter to approximate the former. The core of our method is estimating the propensity score, based on the framework of covariate adjustment.
As the result of our study, we found that in approximating the results of surveys on probability sample by results of survey done on non-probability samples by different mode, choosing good sets of covariate is very important. We proposed a four-step procedure of variable selection for better covariate adjustment. In addition, we also emphasized that obtaining results of high quality in web survey itself is another key for success in that approximation. We discussed various aspects of quality control in web survey administration. Based on these results, we will further investigate into the task of appropriately integrate the results of mixed-mode surveys into single estimates of population parameter. -
The East Asia Value Survey

The main objectives of this study were 1)to carry out a series of statistical sampling surveys on peoples' values and attitudes of the East Asian countries, 2)to analyze the "peoples' sense of trust" concerning the peaceful development of world economy and politics, and 3)to establish data-base of our cross-national comparative studies for the mutual understanding of peoples' social attitudes and values.
For 1)and 2)above, we have published many research papers in the special issues of Behaviormetrika and Japanese Journal of Behaviormetrics among others. As for 3), we are preparing a home page for public access to our survey data sets on the computer network. Also we have donated our past survey data (7 countries survey) to ZA (Zentralarchiv) in Germany, so that the data is now open to public under their supervision.
We are still continuing our efforts on the data analysis and data-archiving, extending our research beyond our survey team.
