  • Life stories of migrants and a globalized "Asia" : A case study of Japanese living in Hong Kong and Shanghai

    SAKAI,Chie

    50(1), 25-47   2018.10

     More details

This paper examines the transition of political and economic relations between Japan and China based on the collected life stories of Japanese migrants who have moved to Hong Kong and Shanghai since the mid 1990s.The number of Japanese living in China has increased mainly because of the appreciation of the yen and the internationalization of the Japanese economy. Sociological studies have tended to describe these residents' experiences as a personal lifestyle choice; however, this study found that they decided to move to Asian cities, because of the availability of proper visas and employment opportunities. Hence, political and economic relations had great influence on their personal choices. This paper also discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative research over the past 20 years.

  • The roles of "newcomer residents" and "populations who retain an interest in local villages (Kankei-Jinkou)" in depopulated countryside villages : A case study of students' research activities in Kawakami village, Nara

    SAKAI,Chie, OCHI, Yuko

    51(2), 17-50   2020.3

     More details

This paper examines the interaction between local residents and newcomers in a forested village (Kawakami village) in Nara. The ageing of Japan's countryside population, combined with a declining number of residents, has caused the government to establish policies which encourage city residents to move to the depopulated countryside. This village has welcomed several newcomers every year, so both the authors and undergraduate students, supervised by us, interviewed residents regarding their decisions to live in that village. Their life stories explained that there were differences and misunderstandings between local residents and newcomers, but also several places and occasions where both of them mixed and interacted together. This paper also explores ways in which students' research could be used to produce connections with depopulated villages. The Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications have emphasized the importance of "Kankei-Jinkou," which means the population who retain an interest in the countryside villages they do not live in. As most of the students have been raised in cities, their experiences as fieldworkers made them interested in understanding the dynamics of the villages in spite of the limitation of a short-term research.

This research project is designed as the second phase of JSPS research project to analyze family-related migration in East/Southeast Asia, started since 2010. The first phase, a Research Project on the Duplicated Trajectories of Marriage Migrants in Asia (2010-2015), tried to describe how repeated/complicated migration trajectories of family migrants are, and as results, how easily degraded the family migrants statuses are, although their identity may be multiple.
Upon the goal of the first phase, the second phase of the research project was built to purse analysis on multi-affiliated identities and degraded legal, economic and social status of family migrants. The target of the second phase is focused to the children who migrate cross-borderly, or the children who experience crossing borders in their daily life, within family, school, community and urban spaces, to describe the gap between the multi-affiliated identity and degraded legal (economic, social) status.

This study examines the globalization of academic institutions and universities in contemporary Japan. In Japan, education and academic activities have been conducted in the local language (Japanese); however, under the pressure of globalization, the government have required universities to be more internationalized. For example, universities need more courses open to students who use English as a medium of education, and increase foreign students and faculty members who earned their academic degree abroad. Using interviews of Japanese academics who had studied abroad and Chinese students in Japan and observation of cases of academic institutions in other countries, this study discusses how Japanese academia should exchange research and opinions with other countries.

For many years, marriage migration was considered only in terms of female migration. This research project situates marriage migration in the context of diaspora. In particular, field research and analytical outcomes validate the consideration of marriage migrants as transnational diasporas with multiple identities who have limited access to de-facto citizenship in either host/home countries.

This research examines the programs and services supporting for raising children in the Osaka city and Hong Kong. In Osaka, the department of gender-equality has started support programs for mothers who want to resume career. These programs has expanded the supports for mothers from providing information, arranging the places they meet each other, to program strengthen their long-term life planning. In Hong Kong, women who continue to work after having children hire foreign domestic helpers to outsource a considerable part of reproduction work. These mothers could work continuously without a long maternity leave, however mothers are responsible to choose the appropriate care for their child and to educate them as well.

Devising educational methods
