    The goal of this study is to develop an exploratory search system for sound effects (SEs). SEs appreciably influence viewers' impressions of a scene in a movie
    thus, SE editors must skillfully select the most appropriate SEs for each scene. Existing SE search methods, however, have three main difficulties involving the diversity of SE purposes, the representation of sound using text, and the conceptualization of SEs for a given scene. These difficulties lead to inefficient SE searches because the SE editor is forced to perform repeated searches. To solve the problem, this paper proposes a framework for SE exploration under multiple perspectives. In the framework, similarities among SEs are provided to the searcher as clues for exploration. The similarities are defined by three types of features: context, acoustic features, and symbol of onomatopoeia. This paper presents the details of the framework, a system developed with the framework, function and interaction provided by the system, and the results of user observation with the system.

    This paper reports on a study in which a proposed interface that visualizes spatio-temporal trend information for exploratory data analysis was realized. The proposed system supports users' analysis of time-series data in an exploratory manner. Such exploratory analysis requires repeated access to various types of information related to the users' interests such as texts and numerical data. During analysis of time-series data, it is essential that users understand temporal changes and the cause of those changes. The proposed system helps users by facilitating understanding of the temporal changes in time-series data and the causes of those changes. The implemented interface currently utilizes newspaper articles, maps, and statistical data as data modalities.

    This paper proposes an interface to support information seeking behavior for context searching. Context searching is a search behavior based on trend-related queries (e.g., "What were the hot topics last year?"). Our proposed system facilitates such search behavior using trend-related queries. In the current search engine, users encounter difficulty in inputting a trendrelated query using natural language because their query needs to have specific terms (e.g., iPod MAX @period). The users also experience difficulty in understanding the search results that are usually presented in a tabular form. To solve these issues, we present a new user interface to facilitate exploratory behavior and understanding. Initially, this interface identifies seven questions that we assume the users will use to perform a context search. Then, the system starts the search according to the classified questions, and the results are displayed in a timeline format.

    Our goal is to support users who want to discover or create knowledge from a large amount of text data. Text mining is a process that extracts novel knowledge from unstructured data. A variety of applications for text mining, such as Total Environment for Text Data Mining, have been proposed. However, to the best of our knowledge, these methods are not effective at conducting text mining tasks aimed at finding novel knowledge. In this paper, we discuss characteristics of the text mining process and propose a design principle for building text mining applications based on two concepts: (1) text mining is an exploratory search task, and (2) text mining is a process for creative knowledge work.

    Photographs capture information on situations or circumstances that give some clue about users' access to past activities. The photographs remind them of their personal experiences and of social events that took place at a certain time. Our research intends to use such information to help them recollect events and to acquire novel information by connecting memory and social records, for example, news reports. Toward this end, we propose a system called PHOTMOSPHERE that helps users recollect past events by connecting memory (photographs) and records (news). We conducted an experiment to observe the effect of showing news with photographs. Participants were shown either photographs alone that they had taken or both news reports and photographs they had taken. They were then asked to describe their recollections under both conditions. We found that, in many cases, news reports helped participants remember events, but not in some cases, for instance, when the subject of the photograph was a person or an object. On the basis of this result, we reformulate PHOTMOSPHERE design criteria.

    The aim of this study is to develop a system that supports drawing skill proficiency in making illustrations online. To achieve this, we conducted an experiment that focuses on gaze information at the time of sketching in order to obtain fundamental data of a user's behavior when drawing. In this experiment, motifs for drawing were prepared from illustrations and photographs. Gaze information of experts and beginners in their drawing activities were recorded with an eye-tracking system. We compared the gaze data of experts and those of beginners in terms of duration and region of gazing. The results of the experiment show that gaze duration for looking at the motifs tends to be longer than the time spent by users looking at their own drawings. We also found that when the motif for drawing is an illustration of a human face, the gaze duration of experts for looking at the motifs tends to be significantly shorter than that of beginners.

    This paper proposes a dynamic shadow generation system that combines the shadow of an object with the artificial shadows of virtual characters. In our proposed system, infrared light is used to capture an object's shadow in order to discriminate between a shadow generated by an object and a virtual shadow generated by the system. Our proposed system determines areas in which shadows do not appear and then the shadows of virtual characters are added to these areas. This paper presents the basic idea of the system, the shadow generation algorithm that it uses, and an empirical study on the sharpness of a generated shadow, along with the distance between an object and a screen used in this system.

    Information compilation is a novel research topic which aims to compile various information intelligently, and to make it easy to comprehend/access. The information compilation is emphasized by two characteristics. The first one is a cross-modalitiness achieved by cooperation between non-linguistic information and linguistic information, and the second one is a continuousness in supporting all aspects of information utilization. To foster researches related to the information compilation, we conducted three attempts: installation of a reference model on information compilation, distribution of annotated corpus and a visualization platform as boundary objects, and deployment of an evaluation workshop. The paper describes current efforts of the attempts.

    This paper proposes a novel paradigm: human-centered tabletop computing, which enhances the role of an ordinary table by projecting interactive images onto tabletop objects and the table surface at the same time. The advantage of this approach is that it utilizes tabletop objects as projection screens as well as input tools. As a result, we can change the appearance and role of each tabletop object easily and fulfill two important requirements of tabletop tangible interfaces, identifiability and versatility, which have proven difficult to satisfy simultaneously in previous systems. Our prototype, Tablescape Plus, achieves these functions by using two projectors and a special tabletop screen system that diffuses or transmits images selectively according to the projection orientation. This paper presents the design principle, optical design, and implementation of Table scape Plus. Furthermore, we introduce several interactive applications. © 2007 IEEE.

    It is more important than ever to be able to extract relevant information and to understand or review its content quickly. Spotting trends is one such way of understanding or reviewing. We propose multi-modal summarization for trend information as a new technology to help this activity. We also describe the design of a data set that will foster research in the field, and introduce an ongoing unique workshop using this data set.

    Placing physical objects on a tabletop display is a typical method for input. The overall goal of our research is to increase the understandability and flexibility of the interactive physical objects. By utilizing tabletop objects as projection screens as well as input equipments, we can change the appearance and role of each object easily. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel tablescape display system 'Tablescape Plus'. It can project images both onto upstanding tiny objects and the tabletop display interactively. In this paper, we describe the optical design of Tablescape Plus, marker recognition by using ARToolKit and image calibration. Moreover, we introduce examples of applications: digital kiosk application and tabletop theater application.

    This paper presents a new type of tabletop interface on Lumisight Table. Putting physical objects on a tabletop display is one of the typical methods for intuitive tangible input. To date, various interactive systems that can identify and track the tabletop objects by using a camera, have been proposed. However, in these systems, the existence of objects with special devices or markers can disturb users' natural interaction by hiding displayed information. To solve this problem, the authors propose a transparent tabletop interface that is transparent from users but visible from a camera installed inside the system. This paper describes our research motivation, design and implementation of this interface, and examples of interaction. © 2006 IEEE.

    Ubiquitous computing environments allow us to collect and store a large number of interaction histories about human activities and objects. This paper presents an interaction design framework for incremental information presentation on demand in accessing such history data, summarized and projected in a real environment where the activities actually took place. We identify requirements for information presentation in terms of the four spectra: active vs. passive, real vs. virtual, abstract vs. concrete, and social vs. personal. We have constructed a model for incremental information presentation, and built a prototype system based on the model. We describe technical requirements for building such systems, discuss related work, and conclude the paper with future directions.

    This paper proposes an interactive visualization method to support the exploration of data in decision-making and problem solving. Since this method employs an asymmetric communication mode, i.e. taking queries and requests expressed in a natural language as input and answering them with statistical charts, it can convert the normally tedious repetitive human-computer interaction into a felicitous dialogue. This is because the natural language interface allows users to articulate their requests directly and intuitively, and charts and graphics have many benefits when analysing a large amount of data in order to determine overall characteristics or to resolve user questions. The proposed method resolves the conundrum that the appropriateness of a chart depends on the context. In this method, two factors are considered in choosing chart type so as to satisfy the user requirement represented in a natural language: the type of chart displayed and the type of user utterance. Our proposed method allows the data to be visualized interactively to match the changes in the user's viewpoint without interrupting the thinking process. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    We propose an interactive visualization method suitable for exploratory data analysis. In this type of data analysis, statistical charts are employed to help the user understand the target data, and a displayed chart is redrawn interactively according to the user's input inspired by looking at the chart. Two factors must be considered if the chart is to be suitably redrawn: the type of chart displayed and the parts of the chart that are changed by the user's input. We developed our proposed method based on these factors. As the first step of the method, the part to change and the details to meet the given user's input for the displayed chart are interpreted. Then a semantic frame used to generate a statistical chart from data is updated by the results of the interpretation, and several candidates as appropriate charttypes are chosen based on the frame and chart-type determination rules. Finally, the most preferable chart is chosen from among the candidates according to the type of user input, and the displayed chart is transformed into a new chart with animation. By using this method, data can be visualized interactively according to the change of the user's viewpoint without interrupting the thinking process.

    本研究の目的は,視覚情報が過剰に存在する環境下において,不要な情報を低減させることで識別性の向上を目指した情報提示手法の実現である.都市の発展に伴い,広告や看板といった視覚情報が環境中に多く存在するようになっている.これらの視覚情報はその都市空間における人々の活動や判断に資する反面,繁華街などの情報密集地においては情報過多によって人々の認知負荷を増大させ,特定の情報を探索する際にはその行為を阻害してしまう.このような問題を解決するため,求めている看板や建造物以外の情報を目立たなくすることによって求めている情報の識別性を向上させ,知覚しやすくする手法を提案する.本稿では,不必要な情報を目立たなくする一連の情報提示手法を "減算型の情報提示",情報を重畳することで必要な情報を目立たせる一連の手法を "加算型の情報提示" と位置づけ,これらの手法の効果について比較するとともに,減算型の情報提示の可能性と問題点について検討する.

    We examined how a group achievement is influenced by the views towards the neighbors. Group achievements in two conditions were compared by using a task which a group must put distributed information among members and complete a map. An experiment was conducted with two between conditions. One was that participants'views toward others were not disturbed; another was that the views were disturbed by vertical screens in front of each of them. A result showed that the group achievement was higher in the situation where participants could not see each other. The influence of view in the human interaction towards others was discussed.

    The overall goal of our research is to increase the understandability and flexibility of the interactive physical objects on a tabletop display. To achieve this goal, we have proposed a novel ProCam system Tablescape Plus' that utilizes tabletop objects as projection screens as well as input equipments. However, the original prototype system using one camera has a problem that it cannot detect markers of tabletop objects on a certain area of the table surface because of the light reflected on a tabletop Fresnel lens. In this paper, we describe the overview of the Tablescape Plus system and propose the optical design using two cameras for stable marker recognition.

    The goal of the research presented in this paper is to support users in exploring a large amount of data for the purpose of decision-making and problem-solving. Our approach is to design human-computer interaction as a natural discourse between the user who explores the data, and the system that interprets the user's query, retrieves data based on the query, and presents the result. InTREND (an Interactive Tool for Reflective Exploration through Natural Discourse) supports this type of interaction by (1) interpreting the user's query represented in a natural language, (2) composing a graph, based on the interpreted query, for retrieved data, and (3) presenting an animated graph for the retrieval results. InTREND encourages iterative exploration by maintaining the context of past interactions and uses this context to improve discourse with the user. The paper describes our research motivation, presents a natural discourse framework, and explains the InTREND system. Our user studies evaluate the context preservation mechanisms of InTREND.

    The goal of our research is to develop a multimodal question-answering system that can provide trend information based on a user's interests and intentions. One of the major components of such a system would extract information on a needed statistics and draw a chart by using this information. Since documents on trend information often do not contain a sufficient number of explicit expressions (e.g., "$15") to draw a statistical chart correctly, the system for generating such a chart should appropreately compensate this lack of information. To meet this requirement, we focus on two types of expressions: comparison expressions (e.g., "increase by 30%") and qualitative expressions (e.g., "stable" and "increase slightly"). The paper proposes a method of statistical chart generation that takes these two types of expressions into account.

    本稿では分散認知環境における集団課題において, 課題成績に寄与する行動要因を特定することを目的とする.特に本稿では, 集団メンバ間の親密さのもたらす影響に焦点をあて, その影響を検証する実験を行った.実験では参加者間に情報の非対称性が発生する状況の下, 迷路の中で目標を捕まえるゲームを行わせた.このゲームを個人使用の通常の液晶ディスプレイを用いた場合と, テーブル型の共有ディスプレイ(Lumisight Table)を用いて行った場合とを比較した.実験の結果, 後者の場合に集団課題の成績が高まることが示された.特にその影響は, 集団内部の親密さが高い時により大きいことがわかった.

    Ubiquitous computing environments allow us to collect and store a large number of interaction histories about human activities and objects. This paper presents an interaction design framework for incremental information presentation on demand in accessing such history data, summarized and projected in a real environment where the activities actually took place. We identify requirements for information presentation in terms of the four spectra: active vs. passive, real vs. virtual, abstract vs. concrete, and social vs. personal. We have constructed a model for incremental information presentation, and built a prototype system based on the model. We describe technical requirements for building such systems, discuss related work, and conclude the paper with future directions.

    Lumisight Table is a tabletop display which provides different images to different users surrounding the system. A camera implemented beneath this table can recognize users' gestures over the display and physical objects on the tabletop. However, only image recognition is not sufficient for smooth interaction between users and contents on the display. The purpose of this study is to implement a touch panel function onto Lumisight Table. In this paper, we realize a touchable interface using strain measurement in combination with a camera. As a result, we can know not only where is touched but also how hard a panel is pushed and from which direction a panel is touched.

    Trend information is obtained by synthesis and organization of series of temporal information such as transitions of a product price and a degree of public support for a cabinet. Effective communication of trend information should employ as its media not only text but also visual ones such as charts, and use those in a cooperative manner. In this paper, a research theme is proposed, that allows trend information scattered in multiple articles to be gathered, summarized, and provided in linguistically and/or visually. We show a framework to accomplish this research and explain a corpus useful for that purpose. We also propose a workshop on this research on summarization and visualization of trend information in which the researchers share this corpus as a common material.

    A methodology is proposed for taking queries and requests expressed in natural language as input and answering them in charts through organizing that interaction into felicitous dialogue. Charts and graphics, as well as languages, are important modes of communication. This is especially true of those which are used frequently when people analyze huge amount of data interactively, in order to find out its characteristics or to resolve questions about it. This paper raises the problem that in such situations the correctness of the charts depends on the context, and proposes a framework to resolve that problem. The core of thc framework is a logical form that includes the specifications of the user's perspective and he proper treatment of the logical form for handling utterance fragments. The framework has been implemented and confirmed to be appropriate.

    In this paper, we analyze the role, relation to context and appearance tendencies of temporal expressions writen in a narrative story. For the analyses, we classified time expressions into two viewpoints: a time scale and the form of expession. The reason we focused on time expessions is that these expressions have a strong influence on the structure of a story: these expressions not only indicate the stream of time in a story but also make the readers be fascinated in a story by creating tempo. As a result of the analyses, we found the boundarywithin a time scale that can be used to discriminate between the concrete part and abstract part of a story.Furthermore, we found an appropriate way to handle time expressions depending on the situation. According to our results, time expessions are useful clues for judging changes in scene and viewpoint.

    This study focused on improving the credibility of information obtained on social media platforms during large-scale disasters. To that end, the study drew on information triage, the process of prioritizing and filtering information within time constraints. In the event of large-scale disasters, separating important information from junk information on Twitter had been a major challenge. To identify tweets calling for help, journalistic skills to sort through information and an approach to reduce information noise and identify irrelevant tweets were applied, which resulted in higher rates of identifying tweets calling for help. The study also observed twitter users by employing a prototype system of information triage, and identified challenges in sorting through information in the event of large-scale disasters.

    This research project aims to study an ecosystem for trend information that leads to new information creation through the sharing of the best practice of information access and utilization. Sub-goals of the project include: (1) technologies for supporting access and utilization of trend information, (2) framework for sharing the best practice, and (3) user experiments using the developed systems. As the main contributions of the project, (1) we developed an advanced version of the search engine designed for retrieving time series data, and monitoring support systems for text stream data. As for (2), we developed the framework for best-practice sharing, such as query recommendation function and the sharing of findings from trend information. Through the user experiments using the developed system, the effectiveness of sharing the best practice of information access/utilization is confirmed.

    Since comic is cross-modal content in which pictures and letters are used complementarily and cooperatively, it is necessary to store the contents of the comic in a structured manner in advance to make these contents available on the computer. In this research, information on digitalized comics was systematically encoded and hierarchically annotated in RDF format to meet the requirement. By referring to these annotation sets, the computer can search and process comic contents along with the user's intention.
    In addition, focusing on review sentences as clues to acquire the contents of comics, we proposed a method of acquiring topics by combining term frequency - inverse document frequency (tf-idf) method and hierarchical Latent Dirichlet Allocation (hLDA) method to classify comics. Using these data and methods, a comic question answering system and an exploratory comic search system are developed.

    In this research, we developed a novel marker that can multiplex information on a physically single plane. The proposed marker consists of several infra red light cut filters (IR-filters), each of which has different threshold of transmitting wavelengths. These IR filters were arranged in matrix form and set inside the marker. When the marker is illuminated by an infra red light, a pattern appears in a form of shadows invisible to the human eye, and the pattern changes when the marker is illuminated by another infra red light with different wavelength. Since the marker is stackable, the user can easily change the marker pattern. As applications of the marker, we implemented two prototype systems. One is an optical certification device and the other is a wall-shaped interactive surface system. In addition, we created several interactive art systems that utilize the proposed mechanism.

    Although a Web search engine is a necessary tool for us to access huge amount of information available on the Web, we think that there is a significant difference between function provided by existing search engines and users' information needs. Aiming at narrowing the gap, we focus on the task of answering trend-related queries. By focusing on the specific task, more advanced search functions can be provided compared with existing Web search engines. As the task of answering trend-related queries is supposed to be common in various domains, we expect it could be used for various purposes. Prototype context search engine provides three basic functions, which can be accessed via both of ordinary Web browsers and API. Experimental results using the prototype search engine show that users can break their information needs into several queries using those functions. It is also shown it can be used for finding relationship among different data resources.

    We have many kinds of data of time series such as daily temperatures and stock prices. It is likely that we understand them via linguistic expressions for the global trend and local features. In this research, we formulate a method to extract linguistic expressions for the global trend, local features and oscillation using fuzzy sets and implement a system for extracting them from a time series data. Then we implement two prototype systems for retrieving similar time series in a database of time series and learning knowledge from a set of data including time series. The retrieval of similar time series is based on a similarity degrees of linguistic expressions for global trend, local features and oscillation. The learning of knowledge is an extension of fuzzy C4.5 to including attributes of global trend, local features and oscillation.

As a first step to meet this goal, this research investigates how humans communication acts are influenced by the availability of non-verbal communication modalities, and types of information they are able to refer. We conducted three types of experiments in two environments and observed the achievement ratio of the given task and subject utterances. Our experiments have revealed the following : (1) the availability of deictic references (e.g., pointing with a finger) affect the achievement ratio and the content of subject utterances ; (2) the visibility of other subjects does not affect the achievement ratio ; (3) the differences in the environments do not affect the utterance frequencies, their length, or their content ; and (4) average utility of a participant rises significantly only when expected total utility of his/her group is available and his/her utility is invariant over time.The goal of this research is to formulate the design criteria for developing a successful collaboration support system to be used among different professionals.     本研究は、ユーザが多量のデータから有益な情報を見出すために行う探索的な分析行為を支援する技術の実現を目的としている。このような分析行為の支援の枠組みとして、ユーザが自然言語でシステムに質問し、システムが可視化表現(統計グラフ)でユーザに応答するインタラクションモデルを提案している。本年度は、(1)昨年度に試作したシステムを用い、被験者実験を行ってユーザの自己内省行為がシステムの操作にどのように現れるかにっいての分析、(2)テキスト情報と数値情報を併用した探索支援システムのモデル化と実装、を行った。(1)では、5人の被験者を対象として、10年分の売上高データの分析結果から今後の販売指針を立案するタスクを課し、その様子を観察した。その結果、被験者らは、探索過程で生じた疑問や得られた知見を振り返る際の手掛かりとして、付箋機能を用いてテキスト形式で外在化した表現だけでなく、オブジェクトの位置やサイズ変更といった操作で生じた視覚情報を用いられている様子が観察された。この結果から、外在化表現と内的資源(記憶)とを適切に対応させる枠組みが、探索的データ分析支援にとって重要であることが示唆される。また(2)に関しては、動向情報を対象とし、それに対するユーザの関心(e.g.,最近数ヶ月のガソリン価格の変化、ここ数年の携帯電話加入者数の推移)に応じて時系列数値情報を統計グラフ(折線グラフ)として描画し、その上に関連する言語情報をその内容に応じたアイコンの形式で協調的に提示する方法を提案した。このアイコンは言語情報へのポインタの役割も兼ねる。これにより、ユーザは描画されたグラフ自体を自分の知りたい情報の概観(要約)として利用できるだけでなく、興味を持った箇所についてどのようなことが述べられているかを背景となっている文書群にアクセスすることで参照できるようになっている。

Devising educational methods

  • 講義ではPCを利用し、関連する動画コンテンツを学生に提示し、より理解が高まるようにしている。特に、学会や展示会等で得た最新の映像を授業で利用することにより、学問の体系だけでなく、そこから発展した最新の研究動向や技術動向についての理解も得られるようにしている。また、授業の前半20分程度かけて前回の授業内容を概観し、記憶の定着と理解促進に努めている。実習では、簡単な内容から高度な内容に至る過程で、まず例を見せて模倣させた後、自らが考えて応用できる課題を提示し、ステップアップが容易にできるように工夫している。ハードウェアを使った実習では、学生個々の要望に応じて授業カリキュラムを超えた高度な内容や特殊なセンサなどの利用方法についても教示し、意欲のある学生を伸ばす工夫をしている。ゼミでは学会聴講や発表、コンテストへの応募を推奨し、主体的に学外で活躍できるよう指導している。なお、2010年度には学生が電子工作コンテストで入選を果たした。
