We demonstrate that a well-behaved utility function can generate Giffen behavior, where "well-behaved" means that its indifference curves are smooth, convex, and closed in a commodity space; the resulting demand function of each good is differentiable with respect to prices and income. Moreover, we show that Giffen behavior is compatible with any level of utility and an arbitrarily low share of income spent on the inferior good. This contrasts sharply with the common view that the Giffen paradox tends to occur when households' wealth levels are low.

Constructing a two-country, two-good, two-factor model of international trade under quasilinear utility functions, we prove a modified Heckscher-Ohlin (MHO) theorem which relates trade patterns to the international distribution of factor endowments in a manner that has parallels with the standard HO theorem. The MHO theorem survives imperfect competition, increasing returns and externalities. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper introduces consumption externalities into one of the base line models of growth in which continuing expansion of product variety sustains long-term growth. We assume that consumers set a benchmark stock of consumption for each good so that there are commodity-specific external effects. Each good is produced by a monopolistically competitive firm and the firm exploits the presence of consumption external effects in determining its profit-maximizing price. Given those settings, we show that the introduction of consumption externalities may affect the balanced-growth characterization, transitional dynamics and policy effects in fundamental manners. We formulate a two-country endogenous growth model, which explain joint determination of long-run trade patterns and world growth rates. After providing the existence and local stability of the continuum of balanced growth paths, we show that main standard trade propositions hold under some modifications and that, subject to certain conditions concerning social and private rankings of factory intensities between production sectors, the higher is the growth rate, the smaller is the volume of international trade among balanced growth paths in the continuum. We show that indeterminacy arises in a discrete-time competitive two-country dynamic model of international trade in which externalities, imperfect competition, public goods, and government intervention are assumed away. The present model is a standard dynamic trade model in the sense that there is neither an international credit market nor international factor mobility, and these intrinsic features are a source of indeterminacy. Indeterminacy is implied by the condition for the existence of a steady state.

We study the relationship between commodity taxation and the effect of entry with imperfect competition. We develop a simple general equilibrium model with imperfect competition in which consumers have variety preferences. As a result, we see that introducing specific taxes increases social welfare. Furthermore, we show that the optimal tax rule is contrary to the inverse elasticity rule.

We construct a variety expansion growth model following Grossman and Helpman (1991) and incorporate various groups of goods into the model. Each group has its own elasticity of substitution. We seek to determine the goods on which the government should impose higher rates of commodity tax in order to raise a certain amount of tax revenue. We thus reconsider the Ramsey Rule (the Inverse Elasticity Rule) in a growing economy. © Japanese Economic Association 2004.

We have constructed growth models, explicitly incorporating the firm life cycle of "entry -> production and R&D -> exit", in order to investigate the effects of the changes in the economic environment on the R&D activities (and growth) and the exit of firms.
In this framework, we have derived more complex and diverse relationships between the R&D activities and the exit of firms, which cannot be captured from the conventional viewpoint that the entry of firms developing new technology directly leads to the exit of existing firms.

The purpose of this research is to analyze the effects of the increase in the government expenditure on welfare in the economy with rent-seeking activities. In this economy, the firms with low productivity may be active in the market when the government increases the expenditure by rent-seeking activities. This decreases the average productivity of this economy (note: I show that the adverse mechanism may arise, depending on the condition.). In the economy where firms determines their wages according to not only their own but the average productivity, the lower average productivity decreases each firm's wage. We call this the wage decreasing effect. However, if lower-productivity firms can be active by rent-seeking activities, it increases labor demand. We call this the labor increasing effect. When the labor increasing effect dominates the wage decreasing effect, the increase in the government expenditure can rise the welfare in this economy, and vice versa.

The purpose of this research is to analyze how immigration affects the host country. Especially, we focus on the case where immigrants do not immediately assimilate in the host country, and consider the growth rate and immigration conflicts in OLG models. Firstly, we show that immigrants can increase in the growth rate of the host country depending on the production function. Second, we find that immigration leads to skill conflicts, intergenerational conflicts and distributional conflicts.

A Variety Expansion Model of Growth with External Habit Formation"(三野和雄大阪大学大学院経済学研究科教授と共著)としてまとめ、Midwest Economic Theory(於Vanderbilt University)・2005年度日本経済学会春季大会(於京都産業大学)・9^<th> Econometric Society World Congress(於University of London)・中京大学セミナー等で報告し、海外学術雑誌に投稿した。
