The ICOLC (International Coalition of Library Consortia) is formed in 1997 as a Consortium of Consortia, whose goal is to promote smooth distribution of scholary publications. In this paper, firstly I analayzed the characteristcs of ICOLC member libraries. Secondly I reviewed ICOLC activities, and found out its future perspective with the comparison between its original policy statement and the revised one.

Rapid growth of Web resources has increased the need for effective organizational tools for of these. Metadata is regarded as one of the most important tools. There are many kinds of metadata shcemas. Although libraries are not the only institutions of documentation now, the experience and know-hows accumulated by the library community is of great importance. This paper briefly examines several metadata projects, and presents suggestions for how the library community could manage metadata, focusing on the strategic documents of the Library of Congress: "LC21" and the proceedings of "Bicentennial Conference on Bibliographic Control for fhp New Millennium"

This paper is a report of a survey of formal library user education offered at 268 small-sized college libraries.The survey method is the same as one adopted for mid-sized university libraries in 1994. The survey revealed that 105 of the 268 libraries planned their own orientation independertly of their parent organizations and that 132 libraries set up additional programs besides normal orientation.It is found that, comparing with large or mid-sized university libraries, more college libraries provide independent orientations programs accompanied with library tours.It is also found that college libraries can not be divided into two distinct groups found in mid-sized university libraries as far as user education programs are concerned.One group is those libraries which provided much more advanced user education programs.The other one is those which provided only minimal orientation programs.

1970年代後半以降，アメリカ合衆国の高等教育を取り巻く状況は，教師中心から学生中心の時代への移行，生涯学習の協調という，２つの大きな変化を見せた。そのような流れの中で，大学図書館の在り方についても再考が必要な時期を迎えている。本稿では，ルイス・ジョアーズの"ライブラリー・カレッジ"を現代という文脈の中に位置づけ，大学および大学図書館の両側面から，"ライブラリー・カレッジ"が従来の問題点を解決しうる要素を含んでおり，技術面の進歩も"ライブラリー・カレッジ"の意義を高めていることを指摘した。それとともに，実現の障害となりうる問題についても取り上げ，解決の方向を探った。

Devising educational methods

授業評価の実施とフィードバック。配布資料をインフォメーションシステムを通じて学生に公開。講義科目では各回の初めに前回の内容を復習。資格関連の講義科目では、さらに半期内に3回程度の復習テストを実施。比較的少人数のクラスでは感想や質問を授業の終わりに書かせ、次回冒頭にフィードバック。 2、3年次ゼミではグループ作業と学生による相互評価を導入。「電子図書館演習」では国立国会図書館関西館の見学ツアーを実施し、関西館職員から電子図書館関連の事業について説明を受けることにより、我が国の電子図書館の取り組みについて理解を深める手立てとしている。図書館情報学課程の希望学生には、随時、募集・検定試験などに関する情報を提供。
