This paper proposes a drive principle that aims to improve the control characteristics of a particle-excitation flow control valve capable of continuous air flow control. Aiming at application to a small servo valve, the authors have developed a particle-excitation flow control valve that controls flow rate by separating particles, which act as a valve element, from an orifice that is opened by the oscillation of a piezoelectric element. This paper proposes a method of more finely adjusting the motion of the particles. This method makes it possible to adjust to what degree each orifice opens, thereby refining the control of the flow rate and improving the responsiveness of the valve. Here, the authors produce a prototype, evaluate its characteristics, and confirm its effectiveness.

<p>Diamond cutting tools shows severe wear in turning of steels. In previous paper, it was shown that carbides on ferrite phase, which were precipitated by carburization, suppressed the diamond tool wear. In this paper, detailed distribution of constituents of the carbides was analyzed by EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy). In addition, characteristics of each carbide such as occupancy, diameter, and degree of circularity were measured. Results indicate that those characteristics of the carbides influence suppression of the tool wear.</p>

Recently, demands have increased on fabricating complex and accurate structures by ultra-precision cutting. However, the machinability is influenced by crystallographic orientations in micron/submicron cutting. In our past work, it was clear that the crystal anisotropy affected the elastic recovery in submicron groove cutting of single crystal copper. Before the experiments, three-step cutting, i.e., rough cutting, intermediate cutting, and finish cutting, have been employed to flattening single crystal copper surface. The depth of affected layer was thinned by increasing the number of intermediate and finish cutting. Nevertheless, few microns of affected layer remained on finished surface. The rough cutting step is considered to cause the remaining affected layer. In this paper, we have investigated the effect of cutting conditions of the rough cutting step to reduce the depth of affected layer. The Schmidt factor of each slip system was calculated from measured cutting forces. Results suggest that the slip system and its Schmidt factor may explain the machinability, and results indicate that the thickness of affected layer decrease with an increase in cutting speed.

In planarization processes of sapphire, lapping process takes a long time because sapphire is a hard material. In contrast, superfinishing, which involves fixed abrasive machining, can substitute for lapping, and it would be possible to shorten the amount of processing time. In this work, vitrified-bonded diamond superabrasive stones with different grain diameters are developed. Then, multistage superfinishing is investigated by combining these stones. Results indicate that the multistage process is capable of producing a 2 nmRa surface, equivalent of a lapped surface in less than 10 min. To improve the process of multistage superfinishing, a removal amount estimation method is developed based on the real contact pressure calculation. The working area ratio of the stone was calculated by considering elastic deformation during superfinishing. The contact ratio of sapphire is calculated considering the roughness of the pre-finished surface and grain depth of cut. Accordingly, the real contact pressure is calculated to estimate the removal amount during superfinishing and finished surface roughness was expected.

This paper describes an improved particle-excitation flow-control valve with high flow rate and controllability. The proposed control valve has a small volume, is lightweight, and can smoothly control the airflow through particle excitation. Pneumatic actuators, which have many advantages, are widely used in automation machine equipment and are expected to be used in robots. In general, such highly controllable pneumatic-control devices used as proportional valves are large-scale, heavy, and exhibit low response. We have developed a new flow-control valve called a particle-excitation flow-control valve, which has a simple structure with a lead zirconium titanate (PZT) resonance mode, large control-flow rate, and is lightweight. Further, this valve is expected to be highly responsive because it is driven by a PZT vibrator. In this study, we designed an experimental prototype to increase the maximum flow rate and measured its flow control and response characteristics. Moreover, we showed that this control valve has high controllability and control flow rate.

A pressure sensor is developed to explain the finishing mechanism in centrifugal disc finishing. The distributions of the flow pressure of mass in the radial direction and the height direction of the barrel are investigated. The flow pressure of mass is higher in the lower layer near the disc than in the upper layer, regardless of the finishing conditions. In the upper layer of the mass and near the side wall of the barrel, the flow pressure of the mass of the wet process is higher than that of the dry process. However, the stock removal of the dry process is larger than that of the wet process.

Our goal is the development of a design system for mechanochemical superabrasive stones containing both cBN and CeO2 abrasives. As the first step, we have already developed a morphological structure model for the stone using fractal modeling techniques. As the second step, this paper describes the surface topography model for the stone. We have already proposed a surface topography model for the stone containing only cBN grains. This model can describe the surface topography with the same fractal dimension of grain distribution as the morphological structure model. Therefore, we have improved the model by preparation of the describing parameters for each grain and the changes in these parameters through the describing algorithm. As a result, the model bears resemblance to the real stone in topography and fractal dimension in each grain of the topography model is approximately equal to the morphological structure model.

In this paper, we investigated the super finishing performance of bearing steel with vitrified bonded mechanochemical stone composed of CeO2 abrasives, which can act as oxidizing agents. Superfinishing experiments showed that finishing mechanism of CeO2 stones changed when superfinishing pressures exceeded boundary. On the basis of this finding, superfinishing performance of CeO2 stones of three grades, i.e. I, T, and X, were evaluated through the superfinishing of bearing steels. Experiments showed that CeO2 stone of grade I is superior in surface finish to other two grades because of the mechanical action of the crushed bonds.

Our goal is to develop a design system for mechanochemical superabrasive stone containing both cBN and CeO2 abrasives. As the first step of development, this paper describes the morphological structure model for the stone using fractal-modeling techniques. We have proposed two models to represent the conventional stone structure: the "agglomerate model of a plastic mixture" on the basis of the diffusion-limited aggregation algorithm and the "morphological model of a burnt stone" on the basis of the sandpile algorithm. In consideration of the characteristics of the mechanochemical stone, we have improved these models by adding the following procedures: the "cluster formation" algorithm and the "judgment of a bonded grain" algorithm. Both models bear resemblance to real wheels in the spatial distributions of both grains and the fractal dimensions in each grain of the real stone are approximately equivalent to those of the models.

An appropriate phosphorous addition to electroless nickel deposits remarkably reduces tool wear in diamond turning. To understand the wear suppression mechanism of phosphorous addition, erosion tests simulating tool wear process and ab initio molecular dynamics calculations of interactions between diamond and Ni-P and Ni are carried out. The erosion tests show that carbon diffusion into the workpiece is reduced, and the ab initio calculations suggest that dissociation of carbon atoms on diamond surface due to the interaction with the workpiece is reduced. The results suggest that another possible additive to suppress tool wear can be found by the method proposed. (C) 2010 CIRP.

This paper describes a newly developed mechanochemical superabrasive stone containing reactive BaSO4 abrasive. A thermodynamic analysis suggested that BaSO4 reacts with Fe forming oxides. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that scales that cover steels heated with BaSO4 abrasive consist of Fe3O4, alpha-Fe and BaS. On the basis of these results, vitrified diamond stones containing BaSO4 abrasive were manufactured and the effect of the BaSO4 abrasive on their performances was evaluated through the superfinishing of bearing steels. It was found that soft BaSO4 abrasive rubs the surface of hardened steel producing smooth surfaces with valleys. The stone reduces both the hardened layer depth and the compressive residual stress in the finished surface because of the formation of a thin white layer. The addition of BaSO4 abrasive improves the wear resistance of diamond stone because the dominant wear mechanism changes from carbon diffusion to oxidization of diamond. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. This paper describes the application of prototype of the AFLEF to a peg-in hole task. This AFLEF is an active fixture and can fix any hole-work and position the fixed work at short range. We have combined the prototype of it and a 1-DOF inserting device with the RCC device into a new assembly system for such assembly task as a peg-in-hole task. However, there are two problems to realize this task. One is the "incomplete contact condition," and another is the modification of location of a hole-work to the insertion point. In this paper, in order to solve the former, the AFLEF has been newly equipped with two touch sensors to judge the contact condition and it can modify the contact condition to the complete contact. Moreover, in order to solve the latter, we propose the modification method without any vision sensor. In order to confirm the effectiveness of our proposing modifications of the contact condition and the hole-work&apos;s location, we have tried a peg-in-hole task with the assembly unit. As a result of this trial, although it took a little long time to finish a task, a task has been realized without failure.

This paper describes a new polishing method for diamond cutting tools. The method is based on the principle of oxidization of copper and deoxidization of copper oxide by carbon. A diamond tool was brought into contact with a copper plate, heated in air to a range of 323-523 K. The depth of the removed layer of diamond increased almost linearly with contact time and reached approximately 7 nm after 6 h. In this erosion process, pre-existing microcracks on the diamond surface were reduced. In comparison with the mechanically polished tool, the thermo-chemically polished tool was highly resistant to chipping and yielded a significant rise in tool life. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. The "active flexible fixture (AFLEF)" on plane level is an active and practical fixture, which can fix any work rigidly and position the fixed work at a few millimeters to correct the position error after gripping on plane level. This paper describes the application of the AFLEF to an assembly. We have combined the AFLEF and a 1-DOF inserting device with the RCC device, which controls a peg only to go down vertically, into a new assembly system for the assembly. However, there are two problems to realize it. One problem is the modification of the "incomplete contact" to the "complete contact" between a polygonal work and each contact-tip of the AFLEF. When four contact-tips of it grip the work, it is very rare that the plane contact is complete at all contact positions because of a rubber-slab and a free joint in the contact-tip. In this paper, we present the modification by using two touch sensors equipped each contact-tip with at both ends of it. Another problem is the method of positioning of a hole-work to the insertion point. Generally, the work is controlled with feedback from position sensor like vision sensor. However, we propose another method needing no vision sensor and taking advantage of the characteristic of the AFLEF in this paper. Therefore, in order to confirm the effectiveness of our proposing modifications of the contact condition and the holework's position, we have tried a peg-in-hole task with the assembly system at twenty times. As results of these trials, although it took a little long time to finish a task, all trials have been realized without failure.

One of the effective methods for obtaining an ultra-precision surface is utilization of the mechanochemical reaction that occurs at the interface between a tool and a workpiece. A thermodynamic analysis suggested that cerium oxide CeO(2) in contact with steel oxidizes the steel surface. Then, steel specimens embedded in CeO(2) powder were heated to 773 K in a vacuum, and their surfaces were closely analyzed by X-ray diffractometry. As a result, peaks of Fe(3)O(4) together with alpha-Fe were recognized by their diffraction patterns. On the basis of this finding, vitrified superabrasive stones containing CeO(2), i.e., cBN/CeO(2) stones, were made and their performances were evaluated through the superfinishing of bearing steels. Experiments showed that cBN/CeO(2) stone is superior in surface finish to conventional cBN stone because of the synergistic effect of the mechanical action of the cBN abrasive and chemical action of the CeO(2) abrasive. This paper describes a newly developed mechanochemical superabrasive stone containing CeO2 abrasive. The effect of CeO2 abrasive on their performances was evaluated through the superfinishing of optical glass. It was found that soft CeO2 abrasive rubs the surface of optical glass producing smooth surfaces with fewer scratches than diamond abrasive. The addition of CeO2 abrasive improves the surface integrity of optical glass because it reduces production of scratches by diamond abrasive.

Diamond tools become severely worn when machining Ni-P plating materials. Tool life monitoring is therefore essential to avoid the deterioration of workpiece quality. In this paper, in order to better detect tool life while the tools are in use, detailed investigations of the cutting force and acoustic emission (AE) measured during diamond turning process have been made. The results of this tool-life testing show that the cutting force and AE supply valuable information on tool failure; the dynamic component of the thrust force fluctuates chaotically when the tool dulls. This phenomenon can be detected using the 1/f(beta) power spectrum with a spectral exponent of beta &gt; 1. On the other hand, the AE amplitude a tends to rise just when chipping occurs on the cutting edge. This feature can be detected by the amplitude distribution spectrum, in which the AE event rate follows the power law a(-m) with a scaling exponent of m &lt; 2. Therefore, we can conclude that a spectral exponent of beta &gt; 1 and a scaling exponent of m &lt; 2 can be used as the criteria to gauge tool life, because it was observed at the end of the tool life -that tool comer had become wom out and that chipping had occurred on the cutting edge. Our goal is the development of the morphological model faithfully representing the structure of a real vitrified-bonded wheel in order to determine the wheel structure to meet a required wheel grade and derive the wheel composition to form such a wheel structure. This paper describes the two and new morphological model for a vitrified-bonded wheel using fractal modeling techniques. One model is the "agglomerate model of a plastic mixture" representing a plastic mixture before the burning process of a wheel on the basis of the diffusion-limited aggregation algorithm and another is the "morphological model of a burnt wheel" representing the structure of the burnt wheel on the basis of the sandpile algorithm. Both models bear resemblances to the real productions in structure. In particular, the morphological model of a burnt wheel bears resemblances not only in morphology but also in bulk density to real wheel structure, and it provides the structural characteristics such as average grain spacing and number of bond bridges per grain that relate to the tensile strength of wheels. Therefore, our models play an important role in the development of new wheels. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A geometric modeling technique of the complex vitrified superabrasive stone surfaces has been developed for the purpose of describing their topographies with desired characteristics. It is based on the generating algorithms for random fractals, such as midpoint displacement and successive random additions, and yields a three-dimensional topographic map of the stone surface. Comparisons between the simulated topographic map and the measured one show a good match
the spatial distribution of abrasives on both the stone surfaces exhibits a fractal structure, indicating that the simulated stone surface is a good representation of the real one. Therefore, the computer modeling could be used advantageously when the designer makes drawings of stone surfaces.

The wide scattering in tool life of natural mono-crystalline diamond tools is considered to depend on intrinsic crystalline defects due to nitrogen impurities in raw diamond. In this paper, the correlation was investigated between the amounts and types of the impurity evaluated by infrared absorption (IRA) and the crater wear and chipping resistances. As a result, diamonds including less total amount of impurity show larger wear resistance and that with larger amount of B2-aggregates show larger chipping resistance. This suggests that the inspection by IRA can be a useful method for screening of raw diamond for highly durable cutting tools.

This paper describes a new polishing method for diamond cutting tools. It is based on the principle of oxidization of copper and deoxidization of copper oxide by diamond. Practically speaking, a diamond tool is brought into contact with copper plates heated to a temperature range from 323 K to 523 K in air. The wear amount of the diamond increased almost exponentially with contact time and reached about 30 nm after 6 hours. In this erosion process, pre-existing microcracks on the diamond surface were eliminated. Accordingly, the thermo-chemically polished tool is highly resistant to chipping and yields a remarkable rise in tool life compared to the mechanically polished one.

This paper investigates the mechanism of cutting edge chipping in diamond turning of copper in terms of the change in Hertzian strength of diamond specimens subjected to thermal histories. The study suggests that the strength of diamond decreases as the result of the propagation of existing surface micro cracks caused by the thermo-chemical erosion of oxygen at the crack tips. The catalytic reaction involving copper is also shown to accelerate the crack propagation. Then, a cutting technique of reduced oxygen atmosphere is proposed to suppress the cutting edge chipping in diamond turning of copper over an extended cutting time.

This paper describes the evaluation of machining performance for the developed micro multi-edged tool and a prototype of new cutting device by using it for plane machining. This tool is like a grinding stone and consists of micro pyramidal hillocks, which are about a few hundred nanometers tall and formed on the wet anisotropic etching in the silicon fabrication process. Though it is expected to machine aluminum alloy, glass and so on, there is a problem that is the requirement of surface contact between a material and the tool in plane machining. The developed prototype of cutting device is equipped with a new mechanism to solve this problem. In the plane machining of Al-Mg alloy by using this device, the cutting performance of micro multi-edged tool has been evaluated and it has become clear that the tool has the machining performance as well as superfinishing by using an grinding stone with superfine grains.

This paper proposes a micro multi-edged tool made of silicon as a new tool in the micro/nano-cutting and the decision system of fabricating conditions to the tool. This new tool is expected to machine a softer material, like aluminum alloy, glass and so on, than iron because silicon is as hard as alloy tool steel and high speed tool steel. On this new tool, the pyramidal etch hillocks on Si (100) surfaces etched in aqueous KOH solution function as cutting edges because the shape and distribution of the hillocks are resemble to those of the cutting edges on grinding wheel surfaces. The multi-edged tool can be fabricated at the desire of user by only adjusting the etching conditions suitably because the topography of hillocks depends on them. Therefore, we have developed the decision system of the etching conditions corresponding to a specified tool. In this system, the genetic algorithms and the neural network model are applied and the suitable etching conditions; - temperature, concentration and time - are output corresponding to the inputs of average height and number of the hillocks. In this paper, the system is proved fit for practical use as the result of experiments.

To understand the wear mechanism of diamond tool in machining of ferrous metals, an erosion test simulating wear process and ab-initio molecular orbital calculation are carried out. The results of the tests and analyses show that the essential wear mechanism at the temperature higher than 1000K is the dissociation of carbon atoms on diamond surface due to the interaction with iron surface. The wear rate is controlled by the removal rate of dissociated carbon atoms from the tool-work interface such as diffusion into workpiece. At the temperature lower than 900K, the mechanism involves the removal of carbon atoms due to oxidization of diamond accompanied with deoxidization of iron oxide.

A practical and reliable technique is essential for monitoring the tool wear and predicting the tool life in automated diamond turning processes. For the purpose of developing such technique, features of the cutting force are investigated, which are closely related to the tool wear. When turning coppers, the notch wear that causes a fracture of the diamond tool corner grows on the rake face as well as the growth of crater wear. The ratio of the thrust force to the principal force rises gradually as the face wear progresses, and rises extremely just as the tool corner is fractured. The dynamic component of the cutting force fluctuates randomly during the mirror-like surface finishing accompanied with the face wear. However, it changes into chaotic fluctuation by the occurrence of the chipping or fracture. The change from random to chaos in the dynamic component can be clearly known from the 1/&fnof;^β power spectrum of the cutting force. That is, the failure of the cutting edge makes the spectral exponent β large as compared with the face wear.

This paper presents a new and effective assembly model by using a fixture with passive RCC function. Previously, in a peg-in-hole task, such functions for skillful assembly as RCC, contact force sensing and so on have been supplied to a ”peg-device” like a hand-manipulator, not a ”hole-device” like a fixture. Therefore the characteristics of a fixture with passive RCC function in this task is investigated in this paper. The peg-in-hole task model by using the ”RCC fixture” is constructed on vertical (x-z) plane. And the performance of this task is investigated by the quasi-static analysis, which was proposed by Whitney, to evaluate the characteristics of it. From the results of the analysis, it has been made clear that the RCC fixture has shown the insertion behavior unlike conventional RCC applied to a peg near the entrance of hole.

Various models are considered for the generation of the ground surface topography to predict the surface texture of workpieces in terms of the wheel topography. Both topographies of ground surface and wheel surface exhibit the self-similar structure and can be quantitatively characterized by the fractal dimension, so that the mathematical model can be built based on the empirical results by using the group method of data handling. Again, since it is possible to represent the self-similar wheel surface topography by a probability function which gives the fractional Brownian motion, a method of simulating the generation of the ground surface texture with the artificial wheel surface is proposed.

Machining sounds has been told to be effective for monitoring of cutting tool conditions, but it has been difficult to avoid misunderstanding of the conditions in previous systems. There are two main causes. First, the peculiar sound to a condition dose not emanate continuously and an unexpected sound emanates occasionally. Secondly, in case of tool wear, the small difference between normal tool and tool wear makes the recognition of the wear hard. We propose the HSP (Hexadecimal Spectrum Pattern) as the definite expression of the spectrum patterns in this paper. And we also propose the new monitoring system by using the frequency of sound, which is applied by neural network, because we consider that the emanating time of the peculiar sound is as important as the spectrum pattern of it to recognize the condition exactly. In this system, cutting tool conditions, like normal, wear and fracturing, can be monitored without misunderstanding under a few cutting conditions. © 2002, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. When aluminum single crystals are machined at the depth of cut less than a grain size, th surface integrity varies with the machined crystallographic orientations. In the paper, the surfac integrity produced by facing the Al-Mg alloy disks with crystallographic texture is described. The residual stress in the faced surface layer results in the inequality, because the scratch strength of Al Mg alloy is anisotropic. From the determination of the Lyapunov exponent and correlation dimension of the measuring profile, the following statement can be made. The faced surface assumes the chaotic character that depends largely on the anisotropy of the strength. Besides, the faced surface has a non uniform self-similarity. Furthermore, the surface roughness is different in localities.

This paper illustrates an integrated design procedure for quantifying the manufacturing parameters of the porous super-finishing stone which complies with the specified cutting performance. The outline is as follows. After a stone hardness and a preliminary drawing of stone topography which can be produced by the computer graphics called ”fractional Brownian motion” are assumed, the cutting performance is estimated from mathematical models. Such analysis reveals whether the topography and hardness of the stone are optimal or not. If the design fails, these steps are iterated. To find an optimized solution, genetic algorithms have been applied to the iterative design process. The developed GA-based design tool is called SUSDIN (Superfinishing Stone Design Inventor), and has proved fit for practical use as the result of experiments.

Mirror-like surfaces obtained by the ultra-precision turning using diamond cutting tools are smooth to the eye, but rough under a microscope. Although a lot of work has been done on the roughness of the mirror-finished surface, its inhomogeneous static structure is not yet well analyzed. This has led to attempt to discuss quantitatively whether the surface texture was indeed chaotic or not. In the paper, the trajectory on the attractor reconstructed in phase space from a measured surface profile was characterized by the Lyapunov exponent and the correlation dimension. The characterization shows that the mirror-finished surface has the strange attractor, the positive Lyapunov exponent and the finite correlation dimension and hence it has the chaotic characteristics. Further, the mirror-finished surface produced by the ultra-precision turning becomes more chaotic as the feed rate and the cutting speed decrease.

This study has been done for the purpose of understanding the mechanism by which the grinding wheel topographies are formed. The irregularity of distribution of grain tips over the wheel surface and the complexity of their morphology can be characterized by the fractal dimensions. Therefore, it was investigated how the fractal dimensions correlated with the dressing parameters and the composition and properties of wheel themselves. Based on the experimental data, the models adequate to describe the mechanisms were built by the technique, which is called ”group method of data handling”. On the basis of the obtained models, the following conclusions could be drawn. (1) The dressing at bigger depth of cut on the harder-grade and more open wheel results in the increased morphological complexity of grain tips. (2) The finer dressing on the denser wheel results in the decreased irregularity of grain distribution.

This paper describes piezoelectric force sensor of a placement system for surface mount devices. Electric charge of the piezoelectric sensor was converted into voltage signal with charge amplifier. And then, in the developed method, a satisfactory measurement of the chip placement force was accomplished by compensation for the voltage signal. This compensation was based on an integral compensation for a transfer function of the charge amplifier. As a result, an effectuality of piezoelectric devices for mount force sensor was confirmed. And the endurance tests were put into practice. The result of the test was that well endurance characteristic was confirmed.

A proper characterization of the topography of grinding wheel surface is very important for understanding grinding performances. The wheel topography which is comprised of the spatial distribution of abrasive grains over the wheel surface and their morphology suggests a fractal structure. Then fractal geometry which can produce a numerical description of an indescribably rugged surface was applied to characterize such a geometrical structure. It has quantitatively been evidenced by measured fractal dimensions that both the complexity of morphology of cutting edges and the irregularity of their distribution increase through dressing process. However, it has been indicated that the complexity of cutting edge's morphology decreases by wheel wears, such as attritious wear and grain fracture.

This paper presents a new high speed and high precision NC-lathe for machining a piston-head of a reciprocating engine. In the machining of a piston-head, a cutting tool positioning servomechanism is needed, because the machining of a piston-head is the non-circular machining, in which the stroke of the cutting tool positioning is 0.1-0.5 mm. Previously a new servomechanism actuated by electromagnetic attractive force was developed as a cutting tool positioning mechanism. But a prototype of this servomechanism did not make a high speed non-circular machining possible, as the response performance was not at a satisfactory level. Thus, to enhance the response performance, the prototype has been redesigned with the use of some plate springs, the decrease in mass, the restraint of eddy-current loss and so on. Also the periodic learning control method with the inverse transfer function compensation has been applied to the positioning control for the high accurate positioning. These modifications lead the developed NC-lathe for a piston-head to the achievement of practical machining with an accuracy of 2 ┣T00300┫m at 3000 rpm.

This paper presents a new automatic 3D-measuring system, using a developed three-dimensional coordinate measuring machine (3D-CMM) by two image processors (a CCD camera and laser microscope) and a workstation (WS), for the dimensional inspection during the production of small molded electronic parts. Generally, in the measurement of small molded electronic parts, a 3D-CMM by an image processor (CCD camera) is rather suitable than a 3D-CMM by a probe, because a probe may damage some portions and unable to enter narrow spaces. But it is less accurate in vertical direction than it is length and breadth directions. Also it takes much time to make a measuring program. So it is difficult for the system using only a 3D-CMM by an image processor to shorten the process time of the dimensional inspection. At this stand point, in the developed system, a confocal scanning laser microscope and a WS are appended to a 3D-CMM by an image processor to get the required vertical direction accuracy and to save the process time as much as possible. The former ensures the vertical accuracy, and the latter shortens the process time 45% than the previous one.

This paper presents a new high speed positioning servomechanism in order to machine an article with a non-circular profile. In the non-circular machining by a lathe, the positioning servomechanism of a cutting toll is necessary, and, in order to operate it with high efficiency, this positioning servomechanism must have the enough force to overwhelm cutting resistance and have a good responsiveness. Previously an electrohydraulic servomechanism was applied to the cutting tool positioning mechanism and the high efficient non-circular machining was realized. But there were some problems, such as the maintenance of oil, a noise, and so on in this mechanism. And so a new high speed and high power positioning servomechanism was developed. This new servomechanism is actuated by electromagnetic attractive force in the same as a support mechanism by an active magnetic bearing. Usual mechanical springs were incorporated into the fundamental servomechanism by the electromagnetic attractive force to achieve the high responsiveness on the lower electric power, and the new servomechanism was developed to make the high responsiveness on practical electric power possible.

This paper presents a high speed non-circular machining NC-lathe for cutting a piston-head of a reciprocating engine. In the non-circular machining, it is indispensable for a cutting tool to reciprocate in phase with the rotation of the main spindle. This cutting tool positioning mechanism needs high frequency response and high power. So an electro-hydraulic servomechanism was applied to the positioning mechanism, and the non-circular machining NC-lathe was developed. The machining of a piston-head needs higher speed cutting, and so the positioning servomechanism needs higher frequency response because the mass of the cutting tool and the base is too heavy. So the lightening of the mass and the frequency response possible, and the high speed non-circular machining NC-lathe has been newly developed for machining of a piston-head.

This paper describes a newly developed lathe for machining numerical non-circular profile article with high accuracy and high efficiency. In general, the machining of non-circular profile articles, such as camshafts and rotary engines, has conventionally been carried out by means of a copying lathe. This method sets upper bounds to machining speed owing to mechanical factors. In order to machine a non-circular profile object by a lathe with high efficiency, a lathe has been developed whose the cutting tool is positioned in-phase with the rotation of the spindle by the use of an electro-hydraulic servo-mechanism controlled numerically. When the speed of the spindle is increased to improve machining efficiency, the positioning of the cutting tool tends to become out of phase with the rotation owing to the delay caused in the servo-system. The inverse transfer function compensation, which is a kind of feed-forward control, has been applied to the system in order to overcome the problem of the delay. And application of this compensation has enabled improvement in positioning accuracy of ┣T00010┫0.5 mm to ┣T00010┫0.1 mm at a spindle rotation of 180 rpm. This result and some examples of the products machined by the developed lathe are shown in the paper.

The machining of an object into a non-circular outline has conventionally been carried out by means of a copying lathe. This method, though reproducible, is time-consuming and necessitates the preparation of a model to be copied. The authors, with a view to improving efficiency and diversity of non-circular machining, have developed a lathe incorporating an electro-hydraulic servomechanism for positioning the cutting tool in-phase with the rotation of the work. When the rotation of work is increased to improve efficiency, the positioning of the cutting tool tends to become out of phase with rotation owing to the delay caused in the servo-system. The authors have applied periodic learning control method and inverse transfer function compensation to the system, and thus achieved a notable improvement of accurate high-speed positioning for an electro-hydraulic servo-system.

Pneumatic actuators can achieve compliance and flexibility easily. For the above-mentioned reasons, pneumatic actuators are used in widely fields of medical treatments and industries. However the pneumatic control vale that can control air flow rate smoothly is large scale weigh. The purpose of this study is development of the new flow control valve using torsional vibration. This valve can control air flow continuously and drive by power saving. In this report, firstly we show basic mechanism of the valve and expound the advantage to drive by low power. Next we designed the prototype of this valve using FEM. Finally, we confirmed the principle of the valve.

The purpose of this study is development of the flow control valve which is small in size, lightweight and can control air flow proportionally. In this study, we thought about a condition that makes flow rate proportional to applied voltage taking the vibration property of orifice plate into consideration. To verify whether the condition is appropriate to flow control valve using particle excitation, a prototype using Langevin type transducer structure that aims at application to proportional valve has been designed by using finite element method and made. And we have evaluated the vibration property and flow rate of the prototype.

This paper describes the application of the active flexible fixture (AFLEF) with passive RCC to the peg-in-hole task on the disk in the X-band accelerator. The AFLEF can fix any work and position the fixed work at short range. In this paper, the 2-dimensional AFLEF is proposed as the simplified type and is provided with passive RCC function to be equipped with dexterity for a peg-in-hole task. As results of the experiment on the peg-in-hole task on the X-band accelerator disks with the AFLEF, we make the ability of the AFLEF for the task clear and also the boundary conditions to the complete task clear.

This paper presents a new assembly unit for practical passive compliant assembly system. Previously such functions for flexible and skillful assembly as passive compliant system are added to a hand-manipulator. But an assembly system is not made practical by this method because a hand or a manipulator become big and heavy. On the other hand, a fixture is permitted to be a little big and heavy. So a fixture is added with some parts of functions for flexible and skillful assembly, that is 'active functional fixture' is proposed as practical assembly unit. In this paper, the 'compliant fixture' having similar function ofRCC device is considered. The effect of this proposed fixture is investigated by evaluating the performance of a peg-in-hole task theoretically. From the results of the analysis, it is clear that the compliant fixture has two advantages. The first one is the wide ranges of the compliance center's location in which the assembly unit shows good performances. The second one is the wedging-free/jamming-free operation throughout the insertion process, even though the size of the work and the friction are large. Due to these advantages, the proposed compliant fixture is suitable for the practical passive compliant assembly system.

In ultra-precision cutting of ferrous materials, diamond tools are subject to severe wear. The purpose of this study is to obtain a guideline for practical machining by clarifying the mechanism of tool wear suppression. Based on the microstructure with better machinability, cutting experiments were conducted by varying the heat treatment conditions before carburizing and nitriding. In this study, we focused on stainless steels, which are highly effective in suppressing tool wear by nitriding. The following was found:
Shot peening before gas nitriding destroys the passive layer on the steel surface and increases the depth of the nitride layer that can be machined.

In the previous study, cBN/CeO2 stone, which is a type of mechanochemical superabrasive stone containing CeO2, was developed. Moreover, it was made clear that this stone produced less subsurface damage and smaller compressive residual stress than cBN stone.
In this study, the super planarization of silicon or sapphire as new substrate material was tried through superfinishing with several mechanochemical superabrasive stones. As a result, the surface roughness of each work by this superfinishing was approximately equal to that by conventional lapping and was produced in 3 minutes for silicon or 15 minutes for sapphire. On the other hand, the construction of the topography model of cBN/CeO2 stone, which was a subject of the previous study, was completed.

There are two types of abrasive for surface finishing, namely, mechanochemical (MC) abrasive like cerium oxide and barium sulfate and hard superabrasive like cBN and diamond; the former remove a material chemically and the latter remove it mechanicaly. Generally, a abrasive stone has been made with only hard abrasive. However, in our study, we have developed a new compound stone containing mechanochemical abrasive and hard superabrasive. The performance of the compound stone was evaluated through the superfinishing of steels and the advantage of reducing both the hardened layer depth and the compressive residual stress in the finished surface is made clear :

In order to extend the tool life of natural mono-crystalline diamond tools, methods for screening raw diamonds and polishing them were investigated, and besides, the machining atmosphere to suppress the tool wear was explored. A summary of the results is shown below.
    (1) The correlations between the defects due to nitrogen impurities in raw diamond and the resistances to crater wear and chipping were obtained as follows : The larger the amount of B2-center, the higher the chipping resistance. Thus the diamond tool including the larger amount of B2-center is more suitable for diamond tool with high durability. The results suggest that the inspection by IRA can be a useful method for screening of raw diamond for highly durable cutting tools.
    (2) A new polishing method for diamond cutting tools was discussed using thermo-chemical reaction with copper. It is a very simple and practical way of bringing a diamond tool into contact with a copper plate heated in air. Hertzian fracture tests showed that the microstrength of thermo-chemically polished diamond surface becomes higher because of the elimination of microcracks. In addition, the cutting experiments abundantly demonstrated that the thermo-chemically polished tool is superior in terms of the wear resistance and the tool life to the mechanically polished one. Accordingly, thermo-chemical polishing is recommended as a finishing technique for the diamond tool because of its efficiency.
    (3) To understand the mechanism of cutting edge chipping in diamond turning of copper over an extended time, changes in Hertzian strength of diamonds subjected to high temperatures in air and in contact with copper powder were investigated. The results suggest that the strength of diamond in contact with copper at elevated temperatures decreases due to a thermo-chemical erosion at the atomic scale at the crack tip, together with a catalytic reaction of copper and ambient oxygen. Consequently, cutting under a reduced oxygen atmosphere, which suppresses the decrease in strength of the diamond, is proposed as a useful technique to suppress cutting edge chipping in diamond turning of copper.

In this year, the following items are tried and successful results are obtained : 1) establishment of fabrication process of solid needle by micro molding method for PLA material, 2) estimation of resistance force during insertion to artificial skin of silicone rubber, 3) development of fabrication method of drilling the high aspect ratio hole to the solid PLA needle by excimer laser, 4) sampling blood by capillary force. As for 1), optimal condition of injection temperature and injection pressure is searched. As the result, it is proved that setting the temperature to just above the melting point of PLA and setting the pressure to the allowable maximal value of the injection machine lead to realizing a surely rigid needle bearing the insertion to human skin. As for 2), a measuring system of resistance force during insertion is newly developed. This system employs a high performance load cell and combines it with a 1DOF linear stage, all function of which are controlled by a personal computer. It is proved that the sharp tip and thin shank is effective for reducing the resistance force. However, the effect of jagged shape is not prominent on reducing the force. As for 3), a hole with high aspect ratio of 20 micro meter diameter and 1mm length is realized. As for 4), it is observed by a zoom microscope that the blood surely runs up inside the hole of the needle.

The goal of this research is the acquisition of fundamental technologies that are essential to the construction of monitoring and recovering system in an automated factory. Many researches for automated manufacturing have been studied. However, most of these researches are the development of NC machines, automatic assembly machines and material handling, and a little ones are the study of monitoring systems, which are indispensable to the avoidance from troubles in a manufacturing process. So we grappled with the development of monitoring system to machining process and intelligent conveyance system in order to construct precise and practical monitoring/recovering systems and we acquired three results.
First, we developed precise monitoring system to machining process by using sounds. The precise monitoring system for tool conditions, particularly tool wear, by using sounds has been hardly developed. In our system, the frequency of peculiar sound spectrum is input to neural-network and tool conditions can be recognized precisely.
Secondly, we proposed behavior-inspired system, which referred to protein-translated process by DNA in the cell. This system can inspire new and complex behaviors, like avoidance from obstacles and going to a goal, from only a few basic programs.
Thirdly, scheduling system of conveyance in a factory was developed. In this system, each of multiple locomotive robots can be assigned works of conveyance so as to finish all works with high performance. First, each robot schedules works individually. Next, all robots communicate each other to decide the most efficient schedule for all works of conveyance. We confirmed the efficiency of this system by simulations and experiments, in which compact locomotive robots were actually applied to it.
