The Committee of Safety Problems under the Japan Society of Civil Engineers is conducted by 5 subcommittees. The objective of the Subcommittee of Safety Education that is one of 5 subcommittees is to survey and to protect the accidents in the construction site. For this purpose, this subcommittee gathered information on safety education in practical construction sites through a questionnaire. In this paper, the statistical results of three questions for the safety education in the practical site were shown, and the realities of safety education that have been actually practiced in the construction site were described. These statistical results made it clear that the hazard prediction activities (KYT) were particularly effective in the construction site. For engineers' reference, the hazard prediction activities in the various fields were surveyed, and the present conditions and some problems in these activities were described. These investigations made clear that it is important to revice and share the teaching materials for continuing effectively the KYT.

According to the information of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, from 1950 to 1970, about 2,500 bridges per one year are newly established, and now about 136,000 bridges have been existed in Japan. So, it is important to diagnose efficiently the damage conditions of steel-concrete composite slabs. In this research, we implemented to detect the difference between intact and damage conditions inside the composite slabs by using the wave figure of impact acoustic that were recorded in hitting on the face of concrete. The SVM based recognition method of damage conditions inside was discussed.

Recently, structural damage detection methods using chaotic excitation have been proposed, where it has been demonstrated that response displacement shows a chaotic behavior by inputting an appropriate chaotic excitation to the structure. This study indicates that the clear difference can be confirmed in the response displacement after damage, and introduces the cross prediction error of the response displacement as a feature to structural health monitoring system using chaotic excitation. The performance and effectiveness of detecting the damage is discussed through numerical simulations. As a result, it is observed that the proposed method can make it possible to judge the structural conditions.

Recently, Safety education has become more important in construction sites. Accidents harm companies not only in their cost and time, but also in their confidence. But in fact, many worker who take charge of safety education make point that safety educations practicing in their site is not suit for their task and feel gaps between their primary purposes and the actual conditions. In this study, we extract the source of these gaps from a questionnaire using C4.5, a kind of algorisms to generate a decision tree. To treat information about logical relations between options in a question in multi-responses format, we use Boolean approach.

his study is intended to improve the adaptive and learning abilities of structural vibration control by introducing predictive functions that use structural information of external forces and relative response velocities. This proposed method can renew the fuzzy control rules one step ahead of ordinary methods because predicted information is used in self-tuning of fuzzy rules. Based upon the modified control rules, the proposed method more precisely generates control forces to the structure and reduces structural vibration. Finally, the applicability and accuracy of the proposed method are discussed through comparison of several control methods.

Recently, numerous studies of structural control systems of civil structures and infrastructure have been carried out. To develop structural control systems, it is necessary to consider their special features such as complexity, uncertainty, and size. To consider these features, fuzzy theory has been applied to structural control systems. This study proposes an integrated fuzzy active control system based on fuzzy ensemble learning. It combines several fuzzy active control systems and improves structural vibrations caused by earthquakes. The proposed method includes two fuzzy active control systems, a fuzzy ensemble system, and a gating network. In this study, two fuzzy active control systems are constructed by applying particle-swarm optimization. The fuzzy ensemble system assigns a performance grade to each fuzzy active control system according to control effects from input patterns. The gating network determines the final control force based on the weight of their performance grade. By introducing fuzzy ensemble learning, the structural response is reduced more than when the response is controlled by individual fuzzy active control systems.

In civil engineering, it is crucial to reuse knowledge which has been accumulated through the experience of engineers, etc. For this purpose, it is necessary to establish a method for knowledge acquisition and a method for explicit representation of the acquired knowledge. This paper applies the genetic algorithm to the process of deriving a decision algorithm from instances by using rough sets, and proposes a method of deriving a simple and useful decision algorithm with a relatively small amount of computation. A decision algorithm is actually derived from the data on accident instances at actual construction sites, and the recognition rate and other performance measures are investigated by the k-fold cross validation method Key words: Data mining, rough sets, genetic algorithms, decision rules, accident instance.

At present day, public infrastructures such as bridges and roads can be seen all around. The continuous construction of such infrastructures is posing an important problem of how to maintain and efficiently manage an existing structure.
In this paper, the system of extracting characteristics of cracks showing up on concrete slabs through digital images is described and classification based on damage levels is attempted by using these results. First, the linear pattern of cracks is extracted from the digital images of the concrete slabs through image processing techniques. Next, the characteristics such as the projection histograms that are often applied in the field of optical character recognition, and the feature points in the border expression are extracted. Finally, the digital images of cracks are classified into different damage levels based on the extracted characteristics through the LVQ (Learning Vector Quantization) system.

In the present study, we attempted to develop the safety management system for workers and site foremen who are working in the erection sites of PC bridges. The information on accidents can be retrieved and inputted by using a microcomputer. The database for this system were described in XML as the workers and the site foremen can retrieve information from any erection sites through the world wide web and use these information for their safety planning and management. Moreover, as the XML is used in this system as mentioned above, information can, by adding tags to specific items of information, be analyzed by the type of accident, age, years of experience, degree of injury, and so on. Furthermore, by using one and the same format, information can be shared among all concerned and a large number of accident cases can be accumulated easily.

As bridges constructed in recent years have become longer and longer, and their construction requires higher precision and more complex process than ever, risk analysis in their construction sites has increasingly become an important issue. Although various risk analysis have been taken in the construction sites of bridges, the number of accidents has not been reduced in recent years, and it is reported that similar accidents have repeatedly been occurring. Its reasons would be shortage of experienced engineers, lack of safety consciousness, and so on. Besides, serious accidents are not caused by a single factor, but by several factors entangled complicatedly. Safety supervisors in construction sites, therefore, are required to find factors of serious accidents, predict the possibility of what events such factors may lead to, and to make a prompt, accurate judgement on whether any serious accident eventually occur or not.
In the present study, we collected the accident cases and built the database of these cases on WWW (World Wide Web). And we built a knowledge-based system to perform risk analysis systematically to prevent serious accidents in the construction of PC bridges based on the accidents cases. This system was designed for the construction of PC bridges by the erection launching method, which belongs in the precast PC-girder erection method and is associated with a relatively large number of accidents. We scrutinized the erection process, and the machinery and equipment required, by the erection launching method to grasp the characteristics of the method, acquired expertise by interviewing to the experts, extracted various factors of serious accidents, wrought up check items for, and relating among, the accident factors into a hierarchy, and developed the visualized risk analysis system.

In these days, monitoring and controlling play important roles to reduce the vibration of high-rise buildings due to winds and to control traffic flows on such bridges as Amarube Bridge, Kansai International Airport Bridge and Akashi Strait Bridge under strong winds. In order to improve the performance of monitoring and controlling, it is desirable to establish a practical method of predicting the wind velocity.
In this paper, an attempt is made to develop a prediction method of wind velocity, which behaves irregularly time to time, by introducing chaos theory and GMDH (Group Method of Data Handling). Many researches have revealed that the chaos theory is useful in dealing with complex systems, and GMDH can analyze highly nonlinear systems which have a few input and output variables. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed method, and to discuss the characteristics of the both methods.

In the present paper, an expert system using a personal computer is constructed and evaluated through actual field data. An expert shell is used to construct easily the system. The factors for selecting the method are weighted by using AHP. The fuzzy theory is adopted for the engineering judgements.

This project aims to achieve the sustainable management framework for the maintenance of infrastructures. Introducing the bridge management system developed here, it is possible to search an effective or optimal planning of bridge maintenance through WEB service based on cloud computing technologies. Then, by conducting the experiment of real deteriorated bridge, the system could be proven to provide useful information for the maintenance work. In order to contribute the training of inexperienced or young engineers an e-learning system has been developed, which is available to learn the the maintenance methods including inspection, repair and replacement and so on . By using the system it enables to obtain the sufficient skill and knowledge regardless of time and location constraints.

In this study, some researches were made on the definition of eco-design of structures. In order to develop a practical design system for eco-structures, advanced technologies such as so called "soft computing", i.e., chaos, neural network, genetic algorithm, artificial life, fractal theories were studied and attempted to combine them so as to obtain a more useful method.
This year, the following topics were investigated to establish a basic concept and method of realizing eco-structural design :
1 A drawing system was developed. Allocating several categorical parts in the 2-dimensional space, a useful drawing system was realized. As an example, A prototype system for drawing bridge structures was developed, which can use CG library.
2 A system that can creates 3-dimensional data using 2-dimensional data was developed. Especially, the system employed digital photo systems for the creation of 3-dimensional data.
3 Standardized data system was studied for common use of various data, where data exchange base and information protocol were quite important.
4 To establish a design system for eco-structures, CALS technology was useful. As a basic technology, a translator between STEP/AP203 and VRML information was developed.

In the construction of bridges, construction management is very important. Reliability or safety is dependent on the accuracy of construction even though design is done precisely. In this syudy, an attempt is made to introduce the fuzzy set theory into the finite element analysis in order to improve the accuracy of the analysis. It is also attempted to develop a practical method for system identification of errors involved during construction and optimal adjustment of cable tension forces and cambers.
The formulation of the fuzzy finite element analysis was done and its efficiency was validated through a simple numerical example of simply supported plate. For the construction management of bridges, a new practical method was developed based upon fuzzy regression analysis and fuzzy mathematical programming. Comparing the usual adjusting methods based on nonlinear optimization technique, this method can improve the convergency reaching the optimal solution and reduce the computation load and time.
