The vector-transmitted Citrus Greening (CG) disease, also called Huanglongbing, is one of the most destructive diseases of citrus. Since no measures for directly controlling this disease are available at present, current disease management integrates several measures, such as vector control, the use of disease-free trees, the removal of diseased trees, etc. The most essential issue in integrated management is how CG-infected trees can be detected efficiently. For CG detection, digital image analyses using deep learning algorithms have attracted much interest from both researchers and growers. Models using transfer learning with the Faster R-CNN architecture were constructed and compared with two pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, VGGNet and ResNet. Their efficiency was examined by integrating their feature extraction capabilities into the Convolution Block Attention Module (CBAM) to create VGGNet+CBAM and ResNet+CBAM variants. ResNet models performed best. Moreover, the integration of CBAM notably improved CG disease detection precision and the overall performance of the models. Efficient models with transfer learning using Faster R-CNN were loaded on web applications to facilitate access for real-time diagnosis by farmers via the deployment of in-field images. The practical ability of the applications to detect CG disease is discussed.

Visible surfaces of three-dimensional objects are reconstructed from two-dimensional retinal images in the early stages of human visual processing. In the computational model of surface reconstruction based on the standard regularization theory an energy function is minimized. Two types of model have been proposed, called "membrane" and "thin-plate" after their function formulas, in which the first or the second derivative of depth information is used. In this study, the threshold of surface reconstruction from binocular disparity was investigated using a sparse random dot stereogram, and the predictive accuracy of these models was evaluated. It was found that the thin-plate model reconstructed surfaces more accurately than the membrane model and showed good agreement with experimental results. The likelihood that these models imitate human processing of visual information is discussed in terms of the size of receptive fields in the visual pathways of the human cortex.

A visible-surface can be reconstructed either from binocular disparity or motion parallax, and several previous studies have revealed the similarity of the surface properties from either type of reconstruction. In the present research, we have studied the ability for interpolation of reconstructed surfaces, that is, a gap-spanning task wasconducted using both static and dynamic random dot patterns which give the same surface perception viewed binocularly and monocularly. We found that: (1) the ability for surface interpolation based on binocular disparity is more effective than that based on motion parallax; and (2) the experimental data correspond to the simulation result of a computational model based on standard regularization theory. Based on these results, the brain mechanisms of surface reconstruction were discussed.

Chromostereopsis is a visual perception where a specifi c color is perceived closer to or farther from the observer than the other colors in a plane pattern that consists of at least two colors with a background color. The mechanism responsible for this phenomenon is considered to be binocular stereopsis by chromatic aberration of the eyeball optical subsystem; however, previous quantitative evaluations have been unsatisfactory. In this paper, we experimentally and numerically study a reversal phenomenon of the depth by background color and a change in the magnitude of this depth. Furthermore, we discuss individual differences in the depth perception in the chromostereopsis on the basis of numerical simulation results.

'' Reverse perspective '' is a powerful visual illusion similar to the hollow mask illusion, but more interesting in producing the perception of an illusory motion in a stationary picture. It is caused by conflict between motion parallax and pictorial depth cues in 3D '' relief '' paintings built with depth inversion. Here we report the measurement of brain activation using fMRI in response to a reverse perspective (RP) object, as well as a normal perspective, 3D-relief object ('' shadow-box '', SB) and a 2D painting of the same architectural scene. The stimuli were presented to 10 subjects in static and rotating conditions, subtraction of which revealed strong activation of area MT in all three cases. Contrasts between the RP, SB and 2D conditions showed the strongest activation for RP and almost no difference between SB and 2D. The similarity of brain activation between SB and 2D stimuli was interpreted as indicating that observers perceive the illusion of realistic 3D depth in 2D pictures as entirely normal and not qualitatively different from the 3D structure of the shadow-box stimulus. Contrasts between the RP stimulus and either the SB or the 2D stimulus revealed activation of Brodmann Areas 7, 19 and MT (and cerebellar cortex), suggesting the usage of brain regions involved in mental rotation and depth perception in response to the reverse perspective illusion. The Off-Axis Projection Method produces stereo image pairs without any vertical disparity; however, the projected image is distorted in the peripheral area. The present research compared the Off-Axis Projection Method to the conventional Toe-In Projection Method and clarified the effects of horizontal and vertical disparities quantitatively. Then using the Off-Axis Projection Method, psychophysical experiments were performed to study the human perception of depth and distortions of the objects displyed in stereo. In a crossed disparity situation, percieved depth and distortion of the stereo image were clarified at the critical distance of the stereo matching limit. Finally, an effective stereo graphics projection method was proposed based on these numerical and experimental results.

The 'reverse-perspective' illusion entails the apparent motion of a stationary scene painted in relief and containing misleading depth cues. We have found that, using prism goggles to induce horizontal or vertical visual-field reversals, the illusory motion is greatly reduced or eliminated in the direction for which the goggles reverse the visual field. We argue that the illusion is a consequence of the observer's inability to reconcile changes in visual information due to body movement with implicit knowledge concerning anticipated changes. As such, the reverse-perspective illusion may prove to be useful in the study of the integration of linear perspective and motion parallax information.

This paper describes the effects of moving three-dimensional nano-textured or patterned disk surfaces on thin film gas lubrication characteristics for flying head slider bearings in magnetic disk storage. In order to perform the most realistic simulation of slider flying characteristics over the textured disk surfaces, the direct numerical simulation method is used instead of using various averaging techniques. Therefore, a deterministic description of the texture is adopted in this study. A dynamic analysis of the slider responses can be carried out, by solving the air bearing equation based on the linearized Boltzmann equation with the equations of motion of the slider under the excitation of the moving texture simultaneously. The slider's dynamic responses to moving spaced bumps disk surfaces, including both the circumferentially and radially ridged disk surfaces, are computed systematically and basic slider dynamics over patterned disk surfaces is investigated. The effects of the texture area ratios ( = texture width/texture pitch) in the circumferential and radial directions on the slider spacing dynamic modulations as well as the slider static flying characteristics are also studied. Furthermore, the effects of three kinds of texture patterns on the slider flying characteristics are investigated. Considering those simulation results, the design optimization for the texture pattern that minimizes not only the slider static flying height increase but also spacing dynamic modulations is discussed in order to achieve ultra-high density proximity magnetic recording. Moving random dot patterns are used to investigate the surface reconstruction mechanisms by motion parallax. An optokinetic nystagmus is observed in accordance with the average dot velocity. It was proved that pure velocity gradients without average velocity component are projected on the retina. Then, the same random dot pattern is displayed on a head-mounted display, and the influence of the observer's self motion is investigated. The perceived surface is inverted not by self motion but by eye movement. Further, a model of surface reconstruction is discussed in terms of a regularization theory.

Because of their computational simplicity, lattice models have found various uses in quark, nuclear structure and nuclear reaction (multifragmentation and heavy-ion) studies. However, differences in the mean density of particles among crystal types lead to significantly different properties, indicating that simulations using nucleon lattices should compare several lattice structures. The characteristics of five important lattice groups are discussed and fundamental algorithms are provided.

Signal output from a piezoelectric transducer bonded to a flying head slider for magnetic disk storage is analyzed. Slider-core natural vibrations induced by contacts between the slider and the recording medium are identified with frequency peaks of the signal output. The analyses are applied to highly sensitive contact detection and evaluation of dynamic characteristics of a slider on an actual recording medium. The influence of the medium surface roughness on the dynamic behavior of the slider is presented for both the full flying state and the contact start/stop operation.

This paper presents numerical analyses of the dynamic characteristics of gaslubricated slider bearings under high Knudsen number conditions using a generalized lubrication equation based on the the Boltzmann equation. These analyses are compared with those of the slip flow approximation equations and the differences are clarified. The present analysis is applied to the dynamic response of flying head sliders for magnetic disk storage devices. For a small slider with ultra-thin spacing, the deviations of the slip flow approximation equations are remarkable in regard to steady flying characteristics, but insignificant in regard to dynamic characteristics. © 1990 by ASME.

Compressibility effects of rough lubricating films on film thickness averaging are studied numerically in order to grasp the applicability of average film thickness theory to compressible lubricating films. The effects are found to be segregated in four regions depending on the amount of two bearing numbers:Λ, defined using bearing length; and Λ^*, defined using roughness wavelength. In regions I and II, Where the Λ^* value is sufficiently small, the same averaging method as that for incompressible films is applicable, no matter how large the Λ value is. In region IV, where compressibility effects with respect to Λ^* are almost saturated, Greengard's averaging method can be applied. In the intermediate region (region III), any averaging method using only roughness amplitude distribution is ineffective. It should be noted that averaged film thickness can be determined physically in regions I and II, while it is defined mathematically in region IV.

We investigated the characteristics of surface reconstruction based on binocular disparity and motion parallax. We used random dot patterns in which we can perceive 3D surfaces by disparity and parallax, formed a region without dots (a gap) on the surface, and examined the characteristics of the interpolated surface on the gap. Moreover, the results of psychophysical experiments were compared with those of numerical simulation based on the standard regularization theory. As a result, we found that the ability for surface reconstruction based on disparity is more effective than that based on parallax. Based on these results, the brain mechanisms on surface reconstruction were discussed.

計測範囲は、500mrad(57.2度)×250mrad(28.6度)であり、ミュオンの透過画像の解像度は、128×64画素である。

This research project was worked on to explore top-down and bottom-up mechanisms of human depth perception using a reverse perspective illusion and to apply the findings to a diagnostics of a psychiatric disease in clinical medicine. Obtained results are described on below.
Internal mechanism of the reverse perspective illusion was measured by fMRI. It was found that each brain area of BA19/39, BA37/19 and BA7 are strongly activated when the illusion is perceived. Further more, in case of the stimuli which has no pictorial cues for the illusion, as subjects made efforts to 'see' the illusion, activations were also found in frontal lobe. These results show the interactions between the top-down and the bottom-up processes during the illusion.
To study the influence of the pictorial cues on the illusion, a paired comparison method and the binocular disparity adjusting method was applied to evaluate the strength of the illusion. These methods ware compared to the conventional method which measure the distance between the subject and the reverse perspective object. The results show good agreements. It was confirmed that the newly developed methods can be used effectively to evaluate the strength of the illusion and influence of the pictorial cues.
Psychological experiments to study basic properties of depth perception were performed. Eye movement, influence of body motion, surface perception from binocular disparity, depth perception from motion parallax, depth perception from 2D pictorial cues, were studied independently and made it dear about the basic property of depth perception.
An experimental system using a stereo computer graphics technology was developed to present reverse perspective illusion by changing parameters (such as pictorial cues, geometrical factors, and binocular disparities). A perception experiment of the illusion was made to subjects of the sleep deprivation state using the system, and made it clear that the sensitivity to the perception of the illusion falls by sleep deprivation. This indicates the possibility of the application the results of the experiment to diagnostics of the psychiatric disease.

In the head-medium interface design of a magnetic disk drive, a new mixed roughness averaging theory was introduced and implemented into the molecular gas lubrication equation. A dynamic simulation system which can take the texture pattern of arbitrary form into consideration was realized based on the results.
To calculate dynamic characteristics of a head slider on surface texture patterns which is composed of several geometrical shapes, the unit roughness model is modified and applied to the molecule gas lubrication equation. Moreover, the effect of the texture pattern is pre-calculated and compiled a flow coefficient database. This enables the calculation of pressure distribution of a bearing area when mixed texture patterns pass through.
The developed simulation system enables rapid and efficient calculation while changing parameters that affect the numerical solution of the lubrication equation and the equation of slider motion. Especially, when the pressure solution diverges, the system rewinds several time steps and retries the calculation with modified parameters. Therefore, it can adjust parameters efficiently without recalculating from the beginning. Furthermore, the binocular stereo graphics is introduced as a display system to improve the human interface of the system. The parameter of the optimal stereo projection was clarified based on evaluation of human visual perception.
Using the system developed in the present research, the static and dynamic flying characteristics of the typical sliders (taper-flat type, negative-pressure type and step-pad type) on a patterned disk surface were demonstrated. It is thought that the result of this research is effective in the design of the flying head slider and the texture patterned disk for the next generation of high-density recording magnetic disk storage.

    In order to achieve more than 100 Gb/in^2 area recording density, the important fundamental technologies, which are evolutionary and necessary to develop novel head positioning actuator mechanisms based on nano-mechatronics have been studied for 3 years and completed successfully. The obtained research results are summarized as follows ;
(1)Novel MEMS-based head positioning actuator mechanisms, which operate in not only lateral but also vertical directions independently at nm accuracy, were designed from the static and dynamic characteristics points of view, using FEM. The features are that the dimensions for the proposed mechanism is about 200μm×80μm and actuated by PZT thin films in two directions.
(2)The important fundamental technologies are developed in order to achieve the novel head positioning actuator mechanisms. Those are total micro-machining process technologies and improved deep etching technologies to fabricate high aspect-ratio structures. We also develop the novel multi-layered composite PZT thin films, which is confirmed to have the very good piezoelectric properties.
(3)MEMS-based active sliders with microactuators are proposed. The active sliders that we proposed use PZT thin films as a micro-actuator and control the slider flying height of less than 10 nm. This design concept is quite different from that for conventional passive air bearing technology, The micro-machining process for the active slider is also developed. We can confirm the feasibility of realizing the novel active pacing control technology.
(4)The effects of ultra-thin liquid lubricant films on slider dynamics has been studied experimentally, in order to investigate the feasibility of realizing less than 10 nm head/disk interface (HDI). It was found that the periodic lubricant non-uniform redistribution caused by the slider-lubricant interactions was occurred and we studied the HDI design instructions from nano-technology point of view.
(5)Spreading characteristics of novel cyclotriphosphazene-terminated pertluoropolyether films on carbon surfaces were investigated by using a scanning micro-ellipsometer. It was found that the mobility of novel lubricant is lower than that of conventional Zdol and the end groups affect the monolayer film thickness and the existing conformation of novel lubricant films on carbon surfaces cuold be estimated.

This project is an attempt to re-examine the meaning of "esse" in Western medieval philosophical tradition from such a new viewpoint as one of the contemporary analytical ontology, the phenomenological ontology, and the cognitive semantics.
Masato Kato, having analyzed relevant medieval texts and various modern studies and thus deepened his idea in discussion with some Japanese and overseas scholars, arrived at the following conclusion. The traditional ontology in the Western medieval philosophy should be re-examined in the new philosophical context after the "linguistic turn" in the 20^<th> century. This was begun by the pioneering works by P.T.Geach and A.Kenny in the 1960s. Their works have had great influences on many modern scholars, of whom T.Veres and H.Weidemann are two most important ones. Kato's "Thomas Aquinas on the Semantics of Being" argues against them and concluded that the fundamental semantic view of Aquinas is derived from the dichotomy of being found in the formulation "esse dupliciter dicitur", that is, the two semantic dimensions of being: significatum and res significata. Also his "Semantics of Being according to Henry of Ghent" made clear the fact that the focal meaning of being according to Henry of Ghent is, unlike Aquinas, the essential being rather than the existential being.
Ikuo Yamamoto, having made a study on the distinction and unity of being and the problem of nothingness from the viewpoint of modern philosophy, came to the conclusion that the problem of being in modern philosophy should be developed as the distinction and unity between human being and other being against the traditional distinction "existentia" and "essentia". And he made clear the necessity to rethink about this traditional problem from the modern viewpoint.
Takefumi Hayashi made an experimental research on the function of perception in the grasp of physical object from a viewpoint of cognitive psychology.

Inui and Konishis' report: We measured the activity of the brain during using chopsticks, observing, imaging the use of them, and performing the use of them by pantomime. As a result, we found that inferior parietal lobe, which is assumed to operate the memory representation of actions, is related to these performances. It also appeared during executing these actions, right PMv is related to the precise adjustment of the movement. On the other hand, we examined the kinds of visual information which plays an important role in the motor control of grasping movement. As a result, we found that visual information between 150ms and 350ms after the movement onset is important especially for the motor control in which the movement duration is fixed at around 1,100ms. Our results emphasized the relevance of the time to record the maximum speed, approximately 350ms after the start of movement.
Saiki's report: We conducted the experiments of MOPT tasks using objects that are defined with colors and shapes. Our results show that three to four combinations of colors and shapes cannot be retained at the sue time. It was revealed that three to four object representations, each of which is processed and integrated through the dorsal and ventral pathways, are not retained in the brain at a given time. Rather, we found that we can retain only the limited numbers of object representations, repeatedly and dynamically constructing and deconstructing them through the feature integration process by the selective attention.
Sugio's report: We investigated the effects of local features and familiarity of everyday objects on hand shaping control of grasping by the event-related fMRI studies. Our results indicated that hand shapes of grasping the object with handle parts depended on the motor scheme activated by both semantic knowledge and local graspable features.
Hayashi's report: We measured the latency of the saccadic eye movement when the position of the target object unexpectedly changed during reaching and grasping movement. The average latency over six subjects were 258±35ms in actually reaching and grasping, and 323±40ms in only fixating. This meant that the latency became short due to the execution of reaching and grasping. Suggested that the degree of the focus of visual attention would be positively correlated with the saccadic latency, this could predict that attention may be easily disengaged in early period of reaching and grasping control.

We have developed a novel measuring system of elastic constants using a three-dimensional resonance method, which can determine the elastic constants of several materials including ceramics and metals with elastic anisotropy, The system is composed of three modules : (1) measurement of resonant frequencies of cylindrical or rectangular parallelepiped small specimens, (2) numerical calculation of the specimen's resonant frequency, (3) control of these two modules and determination of the elastic constants. These modules are linked with feed back connections. To identify the vibration modes between measured and calculated resonant frequencies, a graphical user interface and a visualization tool for examining the vibration mode of the specimen were developed. Using this system, the turn-around time of determination of the elastic constants was much improved.

The purpose of this research is to clarify the functions of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in object recognition and in motor control, and try to apply those functions, in a bilateral robot. We have developed a bilateral simulation models and a bilateral robots.
In a simulation of certain basic properties of human consciousness, we have devise a mechanism for the bilaterally-symmetrical activation of bilaterally-asymmetrical neural networks. The simulation is designed such that two semi-autonomous "cerebral hemispheres" process sensory information and collaborate across a "corpus callosum" to produce motor output in an object recognition task. The activation of appropriate verbal labels is achieved in two steps. The first is bilateral, Mexican hat-like activation of labeled maps ; the topology of excitation and inhibition being a function of the relative location of learned labels on the maps. The second step is an inhibitory ipsilateral activation. These step produce asymmetrical activation of the maps, corresponding to a nuclear focus of conscious attention sad a "fringe" of peripheral awareness. The decision for object-naming depends on the total activation of the bilateral net.
In light of these results, we plan to use bilateral neural network in navigation tasks and other robot tasks.

In this project, we developed the new instrument with which we measured the characteristics of the binocular stereo vision under the natural condition. In the experiment, each subject wore head mount display. We measured the detail properties of binocular stereo vison and monocular stereo vision based on the motion parallax. The modulation transfer function for binocular stereopsis was measured for a random dot stereogram of various stimulus areas and dot densities. The results showed that the threshold amplitude of the sinusoid divided by the average interval between dots is constant for each spatial frequency. Furthermore, at least three dots in one period are necessary to perceive the sinusoid and the radius of the spatial summation is about one degree. These data allow predictions to be made of the dimensions of hypercolumns and and the length of intracortical connections in the human visual cortex. We also found that the necessity condition for binocular stereo is very similar to that for monocular stereo. Therefore, these conditions reflects the property of the surface reconstruction process in the brain.
