    Abstract. To prevent damage from landslide disasters, traffic regulation based on records is implemented before disasters occur in Japan. Logistics and accordingly economic activities are halted once the traffic regulation is implemented. There are problems that the operation of the traffic regulation tends to be redundant in terms of temporal duration and spatial coverage. In this paper, to consider the effect of topography and land deformation and resolve the problems of redundant traffic regulation, we attempted to predict the land deformation using spatio-temporal statistical models whose objective variable was deformation estimated PSInSAR and explanatory variables were accumulated rainfall and maximum gradient angle. Three statistical models: low-rank GP model, separable covariance model, and product-sum covariance model were used. According to the results of experiments, three spatio-temporal models showed similar predictions; relatively small deformations were well fitted while relatively large deformations were poorly fitted. Since land deformation due to landslides is relatively large, it should be considered the measures to improve the prediction of larger deformations.

    Predicting the inner displacements of deep vertical shafts during the excavation process has been a difficult task considering the geological, structural, and constructional influences. In fact, the two-dimensional (2D) analytical solution based on the retaining wall model remains insufficient for understanding the actual behavior during an excavation. This is because the deformation of vertical shafts becomes complicated due to the unexpected arching effect brought about by the three-dimensional (3D) flexible displacements occurring in the excavation process. Previous analytical solutions only considered the limit equilibrium. Therefore, the present study deals with a 3D soil-structure simulation by considering the displacements of a cylindrical shaft and the mechanical behavior of the surrounding soil as well as the geometry of the cylindrical structure. Moreover, this mechanical behaviors of the surrounding soil and shaft are controlled by the shaft stiffness; hence, the relationships among the shaft stiffness, mechanical behavior of the surrounding soil (in terms of earth pressure coefficient), and shaft displacement were investigated. A cylindrical model, 120 m in depth and 20 m in diameter, was positioned at the center of a sand domain, and each excavation step was performed at an interval depth of 20 m. A 3D finite difference method analysis was applied using the modified Cam-Clay (MCC) model to represent the soil behavior. As a result, the present study provides a new normalized lateral earth pressure theory for excavated shafts by considering the 3D arching effect obtained from parametric studies using various levels of shaft stiffness. From a comparison with the analytical solutions of previous studies (Terzaghi, 1943a; Prater, 1977; Cheng & Hu, 2005), it is found that the previous studies underestimated the earth pressure acting on the cylindrical shaft because they did not consider the accurate arching effect.

    The hinge type of precast concrete arch culvert was introduced to Japan from France in the 1990s in consideration of the saving of labor, shortening of the construction period, and high quality control of the concrete members. However, due to the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake (March 11, 2011), the three-hinged precast arch culverts that had been constructed in Japan at the beginning of the period when precast arch culverts were firstly introduced, suffered damage, which spoiled their serviceability. According to the extent of the damage and the type of culverts that were damaged, the longitudinal structural connectivity of the culverts was assumed to be one of the possible reasons for the reported damage mechanism. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to clarify how strongly the longitudinal structural connectivity influenced the longitudinal seismic behavior of the three-hinged arch culverts. To achieve this objective, an elasto-plastic finite element analysis was conducted with an analytical model that could capture the characteristics of the damaged culverts. Simultaneously, a penalty method with the bi-linear spring model was applied as a solution to the contact-impact problems of the precast segmental arch members. As a result, it was found that the weaker longitudinal structural connectivity in the damaged culverts allowed the torsional displacements of the arch members to induce critical damage to the arch members, namely, edge defects in the arch crown and concrete foundation. The numerical results proved the unignorable influence of the longitudinal structural connection on the possible damage to three-hinged arch culverts.

    The aim of this study is to clarify the mechanical behavior of the joint parts in a steel pipe sheet pile (SPSP) foundation under horizontal loading. The foundation structure of SPSPs is constructed by coupling the joints of each SPSP in the ground with the injection of mortar into the joints. For this purpose, the mechanical behavior of the SPSP foundation should be discussed with a clear understanding of the mechanical behavior of the SPSP joints. In the design criteria under lateral loading, however, only the vertical shearing of the joint parts is considered as critical. Accordingly, the precise understanding of the lateral loading capacity of the SPSP foundation was investigated in this study through model experiments and a reproduction analysis by the 3D finite element method. Simply stated, from the lateral loading tests on the SPSP models and their reproduction analysis by a 3D FEM, it was found that the lateral loading causes vertical shear displacements of the joints of the piles arranged in parallel to the loading direction and almost no displacements of the joints of the piles arranged perpendicularly to the loading direction.

The Great East Japan earthquake (11 March 2011) caused loss of serviceability on many three-hinge type of precast arch culverts, which indicated the importance of clarification of its damage mechanism. However, there is no effective seismic evaluation method available in the current design criteria of the precast arch culverts for the observed damages correlated with the inertial force to the longitudinal direction. On the other hand, our research group has conducted the series of dynamic centrifuge tests on the precast arch culverts to observe the seismic behavior in culvert longitudinal direction. As aresult, the seismic behavior in the longitudinal direction of the precast arch culverts is controlled by their longitudinal, structural connectivity and confining stress of the culverts from the embankment. In short, in a numerical analysis, the longitudinal seismic behavior of the precast arch culverts should be governed by these effects due to longitudinal, structural connection and overburden of culverts. Therefore, in the present study, 3D elasto-plastic finite element analyses for three-hinge type of precast arch culvert were conducted to develop a new evaluation method for the longitudinal, seismic performance of the precast arch culverts. In these analyses, the structural connection is modeled by nonlinear spring element and the slip and separation between the culvert and the soil is modeled by joint element. From the analysis results, the patterns of the deformation of the culverts and the embankment and axial force behavior of the structural connections due to the various embankment shape can be evaluated.

Three-hinge precast arch culverts have been constructed as laborsaving equipment mainly along the highways in Japan since the 1990s. However, many of them suffered damage in the Great East Japan earthquake (11 March 2011), including severe damage like the deformation of the wall at the culvert mouth and the displacement of hinges. This damage occurred near the mouth of culverts installed in embankments at an oblique angle with an asymmetrical overburden. In this study, dynamic centrifuge tests are conducted on a three-hinge type of arch culvert with asymmetrical overburden pressure, and the behavior is monitored in the longitudinal direction in order to observe the reported deformation at the mouth wall and at the hinge sections. According to the results, uneven overburden along the cross section of the arch causes uneven distributions of the axial forces and the bending moments in the culvert mouth. This unevenness indicates that the combination of the orientation of the culvert and the seismic wave direction is likely to cause torsion, aperture, and other damage to the culvert arch members.

     At the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku earthquake, hinge-type arch culverts experienced the large damage which led to loose the transport availability for the first time. The resultant disaster seems to be closely related to the inertial force in the culvert longitudinal direction. These damaged culverts had one point in common, namely, the small soil cover of the culverts or the embankment slope began very near the mouth wall. Therefore, the aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the embankment shape on the seismic behavior of precast arch culverts in the culvert longitudinal direction. We performed dynamic centrifuge tests on an embankment model including precast arch culverts with the change of embankment shape patterns. As a result we found that in the case of the culverts with small soil cover, the seismic behaviour of the culverts near the mouth with the smallest constraining effect of embankment get to be amplified largely and exceeds that of the surrounding embankment, and that in the case of the culverts with large soil cover, the seismic behaviour of the surrounding embankment strongly binds that of the culverts near the mouth, which leads to the united response between the culverts near the mouth and the surrounding embankment.

    Two-hinge type precast arch culverts are constructed by arraying continuously and connecting each several pieces of the segment in the depth direction. That is why we considered that the dynamic behavior in precast arch culverts depends heavily on the interconnecting type of culverts. In this study, focusing on the interconnecting type of two-hinge type precast arch culverts, we conducted dynamic centrifuge model tests. According to the results, we found that connecting each culvert decreases the deformation of the embankment and restrains the aperture of each culvert. On the other hand, separating the culverts allows them to incline forwardly or backwardly with large load working on the bottom of the culverts.

    In the current design method of reinforced earth wall, the mechanical role of the wall structure is considered as a simple rigid structure although the wall structure is constructed by plenty of segmental precast concrete panels. This is mainly because the flexible deformation of the reinforced earth wall due to earthquake has not been clearly explained. This consideration, in reality, is likely to spoil the safety of the external stability which inspects sliding and overturning of the reinforced earth wall . Therefore, this study conducted the dynamic centrifuge tests on the reinforced earth wall with modeling segmental wall structure. This model wall has no shear resistance and bending resistance although each wall panel itself is enough rigid to suffer no deformation due to the earth pressure. As results, even if there is no shear resistance and bending resistance in the wall structure, the wall and the backfill behave integrally except for the wall panel located at the top of the wall, which induced the sufficient stability of the reinforced earth wall.

    In order to improve the current long time duration of rainfall restrictions on national highways using continuous rainfall, this study proposes to use the Snake Curve, which is based on the soil rainfall index and 60-minute rainfall totalization, as a criterion for issuing and lifting rainfall restrictions, in order to reasonably determine the length of time that the restrictions are in effect. This is a proposal to use the Snake Curve to determine the duration of traffic restrictions in a rational manner. In recent years, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has announced the landslide hazard level based on the soil rainfall index, and by taking into account the 60-minute accumulated rainfall actually measured in the restricted area, the hazard level can be determined in accordance with the area subject to restriction. The Geotechnical Technology Award was given to this project in anticipation of further improvements, such as the application of this technology to artificial slopes.

    Reason for Award: This paper describes the development of a method for analytically evaluating the effect of the longitudinal connection conditions of a three-hinged precast arch culvert on its seismic performance. The authors modeled an embankment containing a 3-hinged arch using a 3-dimensional finite element method in order to elucidate the damage mechanisms of many such structures lost in the Tohoku Pacific Offshore Earthquake, and developed a computational method that can simultaneously account for the elasto-plastic behavior of the embankment, soil-structure interaction, and repeated contact problems between arch members during earthquakes. The dynamic analysis was performed using a calculation method that can simultaneously take into account the elasto-plastic behavior of the embankment, soil-structure interaction, and repetitive contact problems between arch members during earthquakes. Based on this analysis, a three-dimensional evaluation of a case of deformation of arch members, clarification of the damage mechanism of arch members in an existing earthquake, and investigation of various structural conditions in an old-type three-hinged arch are all of outstanding academic merit. For these reasons, the paper was recognized as suitable for the Best Paper Award (English Literature Division).

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the earth pressure acting the wall facing under its pulling-out stage in reinforced soil wall by replacing the issue of the lateral earth pressure which is difficult to measure with the issue of the vertical earth pressure. The present study was conducted by centrifugal experiments. The lowering panel method attached with the reinforcer was applied to this study. The model ground was made by compacted dry toyoura sand. As a result, the reinforcer prevented expansion of the ground loosening zone compared with that in the test case without reinforcer. Additionally, under lowering stage, the vertical pressure acting on the lowering panel attached with reinforcer remained constant until a certain pulling-out displacement of lowering panel although test case without reinforcer exhibited brittle increase of the vertical earth pressure.

    In this study, various experiments were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of treating high water content mud with fine shredded paper and to clarify the changes in the physical and mechanical properties of the treated mud. As a result, it was confirmed that the shear strength of the mud increased and the physical and mechanical properties of the mud changed significantly after the addition of fine shredded paper. Furthermore, when the treated mud was reused as a geomaterial, it was found that the mud showed tenacious deformation performance when the fine shredded paper was used in combination with cement.
