As a sustainable ecosystem, the general firing process for ceramics emits large amounts of CO2 gas; thus in ceramics production, the focus is the nonfiring process; however, the solidification and strengthen mechanism of this nonfiring system, which essentially reacts between surface-activated ceramic particles and a solvent, has not been elucidated to date. The nonfiring process had three steps, i.e., particle surface activate process by grinding process, maintaining the active state until starting nonfiring solidification begins, and nonfiring solidification process. Thus, in this study, the reaction of silica and water was simulated by adapting molecular dynamics based on LAMMPS with ReaxFF potentials. Reproducing the activated silica surface state, three ended models called O model, Si model, and OH model were prepared which indicated ended molecules of each surface. These models and a water molecule as a solvent were bonded in the atomic scale, and the energetic state and mechanical properties were evaluated. A reacted or structured O-H-O bond was reproduced in the nonfiring process in the O-ended model. The bond was a hydrogen bond. A Si-O-Si bond was produced when a Si atom was ended on the interface. The bonded interface was able to tensile. However, the tensile strength was weaker than that of the solid silica model. The nonbonded OH model did not have tensile strength.

The process of nano-sized wiredrawing is investigated by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation in this study. The authors have constructed novel computation models of wiredrawing, in which a single wire of just a several nanometers in diameter is smoothly drawn through a perfectly rigid die together with lubrication mechanism and is forced to be shaped into thinner one. Interatomic potentials used in MD simulation is a conventional pairwise type useable for iron-carbon binary system (for pearlitic steel). For MD model of pearlite steel wire, it is recognized that ferrite-cementite interface effectively offers high-speed diffusion path for carbon atoms from cementite side to ferrite side (elementary mechanism of cementite decomposition). As conclusion, we showed by using atomistic simulation that nano-sized wiredrawing process is theoretically quite possible.

The time-dependent crack initiation from the interface free-edge of adhesively bonded axisymmetric columnar butt joints (epoxy/SUS, edge shape: 90 degrees/90 degrees) was investigated in detail. With the change of applied stress level, sigma(n), the butt joints exhibited crack initiation life, t(C), that varied about four orders of seconds (10(2)-10(6) s). Such a clear time-dependent life property was then studied in terms of the fracture mechanics. The near-edge stress/strain field at the crack initiation was numerically evaluated with the finite element method (FEM) by applying the time-hardening creep law to the epoxy resin. It was found that the critical asymptotic stress field along the interface represented by the combination of two parameters, lambda(cr)(sigma) (creep stress singularity index) and K-sigma(cr) (creep stress intensity factor), satisfies a unique relation irrespective of (sigma(n), t(C)) sets. The same tendency was also confirmed when the near-edge total strain field parameters were employed. These results indicate that the K-lambda criterion, originally developed for static fracture problems, still holds its validity in the time domain. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

<p>The present study describes the tribological properties of penetrated graphite bronze containing dispersed sulfide under dry conditions. The graphite was penetrated using a shot peening and roller burnishing to the friction surface only. Shot peening was applied to obtain a micro-dimples for penetrate the graphite. The tribological properties were evaluated using a face-to-face-type testing apparatus under dry conditions. The counter specimen was three chromium alloy steel balls with a flat surface. The disc specimens were prepared for sulfide bronze and bronze, respectively casting material and sintering material. The results showed that the friction properties improved by penetrated graphite. In particular, sintering sulfide bronze did not occurred seizure at high load. The contact surface of bronze without sulfide observed not only disc-component but also the ball-component by EPMA analysis. Furthermore, it was inferred that the friction properties was improved when sulfide and graphite were each other different area on friction surface by EPMA analysis. Combined effects of sulfide and graphite on the tribological properties of the bronze under dry sliding conditions were confirmed.</p>

Cu alloys such as bronze have long been used as bearing materials because of their good run-in properties for steels used as mating materials. These Cu alloys are also suitable for various applications: High-strength brass castings and phosphorus bronze castings are used for their ability to obtain higher strengths, whereas Pb-bronze castings are used for anti-seizure applications. To prevent scoring and seizure, base materials such as Cu alloys were often combined with a solid lubricant. In this study, the tribological properties of sulfide-dispersed bronze were investigated. Friction tests were conducted under dry conditions for bronze with/without sulfides. It was found that seizure was prevented in sulfide-bronze systems only under certain test conditions. It was estimated that the dispersed sulfide restricted the transfer of the Cu alloy elements to the mating steel surface. Moreover, the addition of Si to a Cu-Fe-S system and to sulfide-dispersed bronze resulted in crystallization of Fe-Si compounds. The hardness and anti-wear properties of the compounds were also improved.

Bronze based alloys have come to be used as bearing materials, and require low frictional properties. The present study describes the effects of surface finish machining history on the tribological properties of sulfide-containing bronze sintered onto a steel disc. The sulfide phase consisted of copper, iron and sulfur, and acted as a solid lubricant. The relative density of the specimen was 90 % and the microstructure showed that the micro-sized sulfide dispersed into the bronze matrix and was accompanied by sintering pores. Various processes, including cutting, burnishing and polishing, were applied to finish the surface. It was found that the area fraction of the sulfide phase depended on the cutting conditions. A further increase in the area fraction was achieved using roller burnishing after the cutting. Tribological properties were evaluated using chromium alloy steel (SUJ2) as the mating surface under dry conditions. The results showed that the friction coefficient depended on the surface finishing process. Therefore, the machining history had an effect on the frictional properties of the sulfide-containing bronze. Optimal cutting conditions for the sulfide containing bronze are also discussed.

Sufides as MoS2 are known as solid lubricants. These materials are also known as thermoelectric materials. However, there is no materials satisfied both functions at the same time. In this study, sulfides powders such Cu2S (chalcocite), SnS, Cu5FeS4 (bornite) were synthesized under vacuum condition. Some specimens were evaluated by friction tester and their lubricity, not only sintered sulfied but also blended and sintered sulfides with bronze powders were compared. Other specimens were evaluated their seebeck coefficients, that is one of the thermoelectric properties. Experiments results of the seebeck coefficients were compared with simulation results. As a result, it was found that SnS and blended SnS with bronze had indicated better friction properties. For thermoelectric properties, seebeck coefficient of Cu2S had matched with experiments and simulation. Totally, Cu2S (chalcocite) has superior properties as both solid lubricant and thermoelectric material.

<p>  Comparative testing for frictional properties of castings between lead-free bronze dispersed with sulfide particles, leaded bronze, and phosphor bronze was carried out. The composition of the lead-free bronze was determined by referring to calculated phase diagrams. A pin-on-disk friction tester was used for the comparative testing of the castings between the lead-free bronze and leaded bronze. A ball-on-disk friction tester was used for the comparative testing of castings between the lead-free bronze and phosphor bronze. Seizure resistance of the bronze castings was evaluated by changing the friction coefficient with sliding time at various load conditions. The influence of sulfide particles dispersion on the lead-free bronze castings was evaluated by microstructure observation before and after the friction tests and results of elemental mapping by EPMA. The seizure resistance of the lead-free bronze castings was better than that of the leaded bronze castings. Sulfide and oxide existed on the friction surface after the friction tests, suggesting that the sulfide and oxide prevent transfer to counterparts.</p>

Copper (Cu) alloys are used as sliding materials. Especially, bronze (Cu-Sn alloy) is popular material for sintered bearings. In the sintering process, the reductive atmosphere is generally adopted on an industrial field to reduce the oxide which exists on the surface of Cu-Sn alloy powders as atomized. However, sintering in the vacuum atmosphere is useful because of disusing any kinds of gases. It was reported that sintering in the vacuum atmosphere gives better properties unless the alloy powder is heavily oxidized. In this report, the radial crushing strengths was investigated for the sintered Cu-Sn alloys which were the bronze and the sulfide dispersed bronze (Sulfide bronze). Especially tin powder and fine tin powder were used as the additives mixed for the Cu-Sn alloys to compare the radial crushing strengths. With increasing compacting pressure and sintering temperature, the pores in the sintered specimen were decreasing, and the sintered specimen which had lower porosity indicated high radial crushing strength. And on the sulfide bronze the feature of the fracture surface depended on tin content. In the specimen with lower tin content the interface between the bronze matrix and sulfide particle became the origin of the fracture, while in the one with higher tin content the Cu-Sn intermetallic compound which was so hard and brittle became the origin of the fracture.

The present study describes the tribological properties of a bronze alloy used as a sliding interface for operation under dry conditions. Many industrial slide bearings are made from bronze alloy. To achieve easy running-in and enhanced anti-seizure, solid lubricants are added to the alloys. However, it is difficult to simultaneously achieve easy running-in and anti-seizure with one solid lubricant. Thus, the combined effects of a solid lubricant and a dispersed sulfide layer on reducing and stabilizing the friction coefficient were also examined. The tribological properties of the resulting alloy were evaluated with a 3-ball on disc type testing apparatus under dry conditions and in air atmosphere. The surface state of the solid lubricant and dispersed sulfide layer was evaluated by observation of the morphology and phase states via atomic force microscopy. Distinctive features of a phase comprising mixed stiff and soft regular regions on the micrometer scale were observed. These two regular regions are considered to be formed from graphite and sulfide by burnishing. The effect of the dual phase state leads to achievement of both easy running-in and anti-seizure.

<p>Recently, the fuel consumption improvement by weight saving is required in transportation machine. Therefore, Mg alloy is expected as the alternative material of Al alloy and resin material, because it is the lightest in the practical metals and its specific intensity is high. However, twin crystal deformation occurs easily, and there are the two kinds types (i.e. {10<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>2} and {10<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>1} twin crystal) in that deformation. It has been reported that the {10<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>2} twin crystal has work to relax the stress concentration and the {10<span style="text-decoration: overline;">1</span>1} twin crystal has close relation to fracture. Our aim is to evaluate the kinds and the conditions of those types with AE method. In this study, Mg alloy AZ31 was used, and the AE signals of the alloy were detected in compression, tensile and CT test. After that, the analysis of those signals were done. From the results obtained under this experimental conditions, the following things became clear. (1) The frequency components near 250, 550 and 850 kHz are caused by slip, twin crystal deformation and crack growth respectively. (2) It is possible that the two kinds crystal deformation types are discriminated by the identification standards decided by the AE count and fractal dimension Fd of the detected signals.</p>

In order to clarify the plastic deformation mechanism of silicon carbide in cubic phase (3C-SiC), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed on the nanoindentation using a spherical indenter. Transition from elastic deformation to plastic deformation has been confirmed by the phenomenon called pop-in in the load-displacement curves during nanoindentation. Dislocations on {1 1 1} slip planes are found during indentation. In order to analyze internal defects, common neighbor analysis (CNA) is slightly modified so that it is suitable for the analysis of slips of zinc-blend structure. In our method, the CNA is applied separately to sub-lattice of Si or C in the same SiC. By this method, structural changes are confirmed in a region with the shape of square pyramid when the pop-in behavior occurs. By measuring the atomic distances along the region of misalignment, it was confirmed that there is certainly atomic sliding by crystalline slip. Furthermore, it is found that, with increase of loading, dislocation loops spread along {1 1 1} slip planes.

The strength against fracture nucleation from an interface free-edge of silicon-nitride (SiN)/copper (Cu) micro-components is evaluated. A special technique that combines a nano-indenter specimen holder and an environmental transmission electron microscope (E-TEM) is employed. The critical load at the onset of fracture nucleation from a wedge-shaped free-edge (opening angle: 90 degrees) is measured both in a vacuum and in a hydrogen (H-2) environment, and the critical stress distribution is evaluated by the finite element method (FEM). It is found that the fracture nucleation is dominated by the near-edge elastic singular stress field that extends about a few tens of nanometers from the edge. The fracture nucleation strength expressed in terms of the stress intensity factor (K) is found to be eminently reduced in a H-2 environment. Copyright (C) 2016 The Authors. SMA (Shape Memory Alloy) is utilized in various fields. Especially, Ti-Ni alloy has excellent features than other SMA. And, the alloy has two kinds of the phase transformations of rhombohedral (R) and martensitic (M) phase. Though R-phase transformation is not suitable for large deformation, it has been reported that its function for the cyclic deformation is steady. However, the detailed regulation for evaluating the function deterioration and life of the transformations has not been determined, because each factor affects the complexity to each other. Therefore, the establishment of the technique which evaluates the deterioration by the cyclic deformation is desired. In this study, the features of the AE (Acoustic Emission) signals detected in tensile and cyclic deformation test and the structure analysis results of the simulation with MD (Molecular Dynamics) method were compared. As the results, the following things became clear. The frequency components of the signals detected by R- and M-phase were about 750 and 350 kHz respectively. The properties of the signals in each phase showed the chaoticity, and they changed with the increase in the stress. The occurrence behaviors and features of the signals changed with the transitions of the hysteresis loop of σ-ε diagram by cyclic deformation. The generation condition of the R-phase seldom changed in the deformation until rearrangement of R-phase. On the other hand, the conditions on R- and M-phase decreased in the cyclic deformation until M transformation, because the residual phases disturbed the occurrence of M-phase. By observing the simulation results, it was possible to show the existence of the phase transformations of "Austenite (A) phase→R-phase→M-phase" and "A-phase→M-phase". And the correlations between those generation behaviors and the characteristics changes of the signals were recognized.

A Sintered bronze system is applied to plane bearings with some lubricants. A bronze-based, sulfide-dispersed Cu-alloy was developed via sintering. Sulfides have some functions that reduce friction resistance, thereby preventing scoring and seizures. Effects of the developed sulfide-containing bronze were investigated using a journal-type testing apparatus in wet conditions; results indicate that the developed bronze may have some anti-scoring properties.

Many industries have developed new materials as substitutes for lead in solid lubricants. For example, lead bronze, a Cu-Pb alloy that has been used for slide bearings, has been replaced by a Cu alloy containing sulfide. The development of Pb-free Cu alloys has received considerable attention recently. Pb and sulfide are types of solid lubricants
in particular, MoS 2(molybdenum disulfide) is a popular sulfide lubricant. This study focuses on a material that contains Cu2S. The properties of Cu 2S as a solid lubricant are unknown. First principles (FP) and molecular dynamics (MD) are used to clarify the lubrication mechanism of Cu 2S. The atomic-level stable structure of Cu2S is evaluated by FP under specific sliding conditions. The Cu2S lubrication mechanism is clarified by MD using the FP results for the interatomic potential functions. It is clarified that there is a specific slip system and the Cu-S bonds that exists above and below the layers of the slip system are very strong. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

The present study describes friction properties of sintered copper alloy journal bearing. Sulfide contained copper alloy material studied as the material of the journal bearing. The micro structure of the copper alloy was consisted from micro sized pores and sulfide phase mainly dispersed at the boundary region. For the purpose of friction study, the sliding surface of the journal bearing was in the form of machined texture. A spiral groove was applied to the inner surface of the journal and graphite was occasionally penetrated into the groove. The experiment was carried out using a developed testing apparatus that consists of a spindle driven with an air cooled DC motor and a disc shape bearing holder in air atmosphere without lubricants. The hardened steel shaft having fine ground surface was used as the mating specimen. The results found that the application of spiral groove with graphite penetration was effective to increase the sliding distance up to the occurrence of seizure. In particular, the graphite penetration resulted in significant increase in the sliding distance despite that the decrease in friction coefficient. It was estimated that the application of the groove with graphite penetration restricted the transfer of the journal elements on the mating steel surface. (C) 2013 The Authors. The present study describes tribological properties of copper based porous alloy containing nano-sized sulfide particles. The porous alloy was fabricated with sintering on the steel plate using the developed powders consisted from Cu with dispersed sulfides. The micro structure of the alloys consisted from micro sized open pores and sintered particles. The measurement of tribological properties were carried out with a ring on disc testing apparatus with a steel ring as the mating specimen. First, comparison of friction behavior between the developed material and the lead-bronze alloy used as traditional materials for bearings are evaluated. As results, the friction coefficient of the developed material was stable and lower than that of the lead one and larger adhesion resulted in the higher friction resistance was found on the ring surface. In order to enhance porous structure on the reduction and stabilization of the friction resistance, graphite powder was penetrated into the pores by rubbing with the graphite rod. It was found that the further reduction of friction resistance was obtained.

Tribological properties of copper based porous alloy with penetrated micro size graphite layer were evaluated using a ring on disc testing apparatus in dry condition. A shot peening treatment was applied to ensure the dimple for the graphite penetration. Specimens with various area fraction of the graphite layer were prepared. It was found that the friction coefficient and the wear loss decreased with the increase in the area fraction. However, the decrease of the friction and the wear loss became smaller at excess graphite area fraction.

Ni-Ti thin films for micro actuators is the focus of intense research. Such films have precipitates with a unique micro-structure. By molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) using embedded-atom potentials, we construct nano-sized Ni-Ti model systems including plate shape precipitates. First, the energetics of such plate precipitates is evaluated. The simulations show that there is a lower energy precipitate which is actually observed in experimental studies. Second, uniaxial-tensile loading is conducted for the MDS model which contains the precipitate. For the relaxed state, the precipitate sufficiently matches the Ni-Ti parent phases at the interfaces, whereas during the loading, mismatch as well as nucleation of martensite occurs there. The mechanism of stress-induced amorphization and martensite transformation is analyzed at an atomic level by using molecular dynamics (MD). Calculation model for MD is made of Ni-Ti (B2 structure) alloy which has edge cracking. The framework of modified embedded atom method (MEAM) potential and its approximated expression are attempted to be adopted in order to reproduce amorphous structure. The pentagonal bipyramid which is used as one of noncrystalline models is focused on, and short-range order of amorphous is distinguished by detecting indices of (1551) and (1541) for bond pairs defined in CNA. Martensite phase (B19' structure) is distinguished by the analysis of lattice constants of primitive crystal unit. As a result, it is found that amorphous structure has concentrated on nearby crack. The change of shear component in stress tensor shows very similar trend for change of amorphization ratio defined here. On the other hand, the results show that tensile stress plays an important role in martensite transformation.

Morphology and mechanical properties of atomic-cluster-assembled structures, which are generated from nanosize cluster of metallic atoms, are studied by using molecular dynamics with many-body interatomic potential. Generation of the structures is carried out by configuring copper clusters (made up of 683 atoms) in regular array with initial approaching velocities. It is confirmed that one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional structures can be designed and fabricated from clusters. Shape of the structures is largely dependent on initial velocities, that is, initial kinetic energy attributed to clusters. In two-dimensional model with low approaching velocity, some structures have voids and show large surface ratio. Subsequently, tensile test is conducted on the structures. By chucking two end regions and pulling them in opposite direction, tensile straining of the structures is carried out. Strain energy calculated from stress-strain curve over testing process can be used as an effective evaluation value for distinguishing ductile structures from brittle structures. On the other hand, tensile strength (maximum stress) does not have marked variation as to the shape of structures. It is found that, in two-dimensional structures, existence of voids enhances the brittleness. It is because, when the structure has void inside, stacking faults appear and disappear more easily than when the structure gets rid of void by clusters being packed closely. Strain rate, as another factor which may alter the mechanical properties, is diminished from that of principal result to smaller value, corresponding to tensile velocity from 100 m/s to 5 m/s. Though the tensile strength and strain energy are influenced slightly by strain rate, they are always low for the structure with voids.

Molecular dynamics simulation (MDS), using the embedded atom method for interatomic interactions, is performed to reveal the microscopic mechanism of stress-induced martensitic transformation of Ni - Ti alloys. Stress-induced martensitic transformation was observed for tensile simulation using four different strain rates. The relationship between stress and martensite ratio does not depend on the strain rate. Investigation of the results of MDS for the transformation pathway makes it clear that there are multiple pathways between the parent phase and the martensite phase regardless of the strain rate. Multiple pathways appear owing to differences in the relationship ( angle) between the tensile direction and the specific lattice lengths of the parent or martensite unit cell. Increase and decrease in the martensite ratio during tensile simulation varies according to the pathways, depending on the strain rate.

Microscopic mechanism of martensitic transformation in nickel (Ni)-titanium (Ti) alloy is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation using embedded atom method (EAM) potentials. The computational parallelepiped specimen with nano-size dimension is surrounded by Ti-terminated free surfaces and constrained regions for loading. The detection method of martensite phase is newly exploited. The crystalographic B19' monoclinic crystal form can be identified as martensite phase by checking up atomic lengths and angles of neighborhood and by comparing them with possible values of lattice parameters already proposed. In tensile loading, the specimen shows a kind of stress-induced transformation from parent phase (B2 structure) to martensite phase (B19' structure). Outbreak of martensitic transformation occurs immediately after stress reaches maximum value. In outbreak of martensite, distortion of unit structure is observed as an actual change in atomic coordinates. It is found that there are two major transformation paths both resulting in martensite structure, each of which has contrary sequence of changes in atomic length or angle. There is also the other route of atomic movement for completing martensitic transformation with relatively long-range atomic migration. The EAM potential used in the present study is discussed as to crystalline energies of periodic B2 or B19' unit structures. Dynamic energies in transformation are also obtained from MD results and they show that there are energy barriers in martensitic transforming. Static evaluation of energy, on the assumption of uniform transformation, is carried out and is compared with energy change obtained by MD method.

Ni-Ti alloy, one of well-known shape memory alloys, attracts attention by their functional advantages in thin films or their nanostructures. Stress induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) is recognized as a principal deformation mechanism, while its atomistic view on nucleation or prematensitic transformation is left unrevealed. Therefore, we computationally investigate microscopic mechanism of SIMT in Ni-Ti alloy using molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) with embedded atom metod (EAM) potential function. The Ni-Ti simulation model consisted of 19 404 atoms and surrounded by free surfaces is subjected to loading and unloading with appropriate structural relaxations. To identifying crystalline phase changes from B 2 (parent) to B 19' (martensite) in the alloy under loading, we monitor lattice parameters, ratio of two lattice parameters, and their angles from instantaneous atomic positions. We define the martensite phase by specifying possible combination of the parameters according to literatures. In loading process, with rapid stress descent, the MDS model deforms and shows maximal ratio of martensite phase. We find that there are two major paths of atomic configurational change from B 2 to B 19' in these martensite structures and there is also another kind of long-range atomic migration whose distance is larger than single lattice constant. The separation into these multiple paths is caused by discrepancy in angles between interatomic connecting line in unitcell and the tensile direction. It is also find that each paths have characteristic activation energies during configurational change (i.e. during phase transformation). It is ensured that SIMT is microscopically constructed by various types of structural changes and their energetics.

An SMA (shape memory alloy) is a functional material with a unique property known as the shape memory effect, or superelasticity. Microscopically, the mechanical actuation of this effect is based on reversible transformation between different crystal phases. To clarify the atomistic mechanism in SMA, we perform molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) of phase transformations for a Ni-Ti alloy, a typical alloy used for engineering SMAs. EAM potential, which can produce both B2 and B19' structures (stable crystal phases of Ni-Ti), is adopted to model the interatomic interaction of the nickel and titanium atomic systems. Two different-sized MDS models are constructed with unit cell structures of B2 phase. These structures are surrounded by free surfaces and constrained regions so as to be subjected to uniaxial tensile loading. A series of reversible processes likely to occur in SMA, including loading, unloading, heating, and cooling, is reproduced by corresponding stages of the MDS. Phase transformation is thought to be observable by detecting the local interatomic distances and bonding angles peculiar to B19' structure (martensite). During tensile loading simulations, the martensite crystal structure is always observed, having transformed from the B2 structure. At a large strain, models exhibit a rapid propagation of local lattice distortions accompanied by the formation of martensite. In unloading simulations, the larger model contains relatively less martensite than the smaller model. The discrepancy with regards to model size may depend on a different degree of constraint strength. Reverse transformation (from B19' to B2) occurs mainly in the subsequent heating stage, in which the stress is observed to increase under constant residual strain.

Ni-Ti alloy is used as shape memory alloy. Reversible phase transformation is basic mechanism of shape memory effect(SME). In addition to the mechanism, it is also important that SME begins with a region of inhomogeneity induced by lattice strain. Now we can obsreve on phase transformation from inhomogeneous structure in Ni-Ti alloy by means of molecular dynamics simulation. For interactions in Ni-Ti alloy, we use EAM potential function. In uniaxial tensile test of B2 structured-Ni-Ti monocrystal composed of 2176 atoms, martensite phase is formed around the model surface via stress induced phase transformation. Constrained atoms for giving displacement speed to the specimen prevent deformation from propagating through the model. This is necessary to make martensite phase remain in the model. It shows that inhomogeneity is essential factor for producing martensite phase in this simulation model.
