  • Tribofilm Formation and Friction Reduction Performance on Laser-Textured Surface with Micro-Grooved Structures

    Tribofilms, resulting from tribochemical reactions involving lubricants, additives, and metal surfaces, are pivotal in reducing friction, preventing adhesion, and minimizing wear. This study investigates the tribological characteristics of textured surfaces in boundary lubrication, emphasizing the impact of surface texturing on tribofilm formation. Untextured surfaces manifest high friction coefficients and low wear owing to the development of thick tribofilms. However, debris accumulation impedes further tribochemical reactions, necessitating more energy for sliding and resulting in higher friction coefficients. Additionally, molybdenum dialkyl dithiocarbamate-derived MoS2 oxidation diminishes the expected lubrication effect. Textured surfaces exhibit lower friction coefficients and higher wear because the structure aids debris removal, promoting the formation of thinner tribofilms. Despite increased wear from solid-to-solid contact, textured surfaces facilitate an early fluid lubrication transition and enhance cavitation capacity, leading to reduced friction coefficients. We also consider the impact of sliding direction angles on friction coefficients, revealing that lower angles parallel to the grooves heighten friction, whereas higher angles enhance cavitation capacity. Unexpectedly, a 90° sliding direction angle increases the friction coefficients, attributed to MoS2 distribution in the tribofilms. These results provide crucial insights for optimizing lubrication strategies and enhancing wear resistance in boundary lubrication scenarios.

    In this study, the smear by the lubricant and siloxane pickup at the laser heating in the heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) was evaluated using our developed noncontact pin-on-disk test. The smear area on the glass pin surface was measured on the disks with three types of different lubricant films prepared by changing the ultraviolet exposure condition, rinse condition, and lubrication process. The amount of siloxane adsorbed on disk surface relates with the siloxane wettability obtained from the contact angle of siloxane for disk surface and that increased as the siloxane wettability increases. On the other hand, the lubricant pickup increases as the physical and hydrogen bonding fractions increase. Overall, these data suggest that the sufficiently low surface free energy is needed by the lubricant film with only the chemical bonding fraction to reduce the lubricant and siloxane smear at the laser heating of HAMR, because the lubricant fractions of physical and hydrogen bonding increase the lubricant pickup and the much amount of siloxane adsorbs on disks with the large surface free energy.

    This paper examines the adsorption properties of the perfluoropolyether (PFPE) lubricant SNH2 with an ionic end-group (i.e., amine salt with a diphenylether moiety) for magnetic disk surfaces in heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) drives. For comparison, the well-known lubricant Z-tetraol was used as a reference material. Initially, strong interactions between the ionic end-groups of SNH2 and an applied electric field in the lubricant solution were established. The surface free energy and bonding ratio were also compared before and after ultraviolet (UV) light exposure to diamond-like carbon (DLC) disk surfaces onto, which the lubricants were coated, with their photoelectron currents measured during UV exposure. In addition, the structural characteristics of the SNH2 lubricant on the DLC surface were analyzed using a time-of-flight secondary mass spectroscopy. Furthermore, the thermal stabilities of the lubricant films were compared following laser heating. Overall, SNH2 showed higher adsorption to the DLC surface than Z-tetraol and interacted more strongly with the electric field in the lubricant solution. Furthermore, although SNH2 without UV exposure showed a large polar surface energy, this energy decreased considerably after UV exposure. This decrease is attributed to interactions between photoelectrons emitted from the DLC surface and the ionic bonds of the SNH2 molecules
    the cationic segments of the SNH2 ionic bonds dissociate, whereas the anionic main-chains chemisorb on the DLC surface at the electron holes generated from the ejected photoelectrons. SNH2 after the UV exposure showed high thermal stability because of its strong bonding to the DLC surface. Overall, these results demonstrate that a PFPE lubricant with ionic end-groups may be an effective lubricant for HAMR applications.

    We investigated the laser-heating-temperature dependence of the friction characteristics of magnetic disks coated with boundary lubricant films by using a pin-on-disk tester and discussed the fundamental characteristics observed. In the contact area of the glass pin and disk, we observed the area that showed a buildup and depletion of the lubricant film thickness. The amount of buildup and depletion increased with increasing heating temperature. It was found that the friction coefficient of each lubricant film initially decreased as the temperature increased. Thereafter, the minimum value of the friction coefficient of each test lubricant occurred at a specific temperature, resulting in an increase in the friction coefficient inversely as the temperature further increased. It was suggested that the specific temperature corresponds to the transition temperature at which the test lubricant film evaporates. In addition, it was also suggested that the thermal durability of the lubricant film improved because of ultraviolet treatment.

    Molecular alignment is key to achieving an ultra-low friction coefficient. We prepared associated carboxylic acids using oleic acid and p-pentylbenzoic acid via hydrogen bonding, involving a benzene ring and an eight-membered cyclic carboxylic acid in the molecules. We investigated frictional properties when these were added into a base oil and found that the associated carboxylic acids decreased the traction coefficient in EHL and boundary lubrication, although the viscosity increased. An in situ micro Fourier transform infrared spectroscope showed that both the eight-membered cyclic carboxylic acid and the benzene ring were oriented parallel to the shearing force, leading to the low friction coefficient.

    Viscoelastic (VE) materials are widely used in daily life. For the effective utilization of VE materials, it is necessary to know their viscoelasticity with accuracy over a wide range of frequencies, especially for high frequencies. Currently, the viscoelasticity of solid-state materials is directly measured only in the low-frequency range; for high frequencies, it is estimated based on the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. However, it is generally recognized that the TTS principle is suitable only for estimating the viscoelasticity of rheologically simple materials for temperatures within a limited range that is higher than the glass-transition temperature. In this paper, we propose a device that can directly measure the shear modulus and tan delta values of solid-state VE materials at high frequencies. We also propose a method for compensating for the shear deformation mode resonance of VE materials based on the mass of the moving part, to gain a more accurate understanding of viscoelasticity in the high-frequency range, and discuss the causes of errors in the compensation method. Finally, we report the VE properties of natural rubber (NR 65 IRHD) measured using the developed device and compensation method, and compare the measured results with those obtained using commercial VE measurement equipment.

    The thermal decomposition of a thin film of D-4OH lubricant under heating conditions on air-bearing surfaces, such as those found in magnetic recording devices, was investigated using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The substrates used in this experiment were those of actual magnetic head sliders with diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin-film coatings. Two kinds of surfaces were prepared: an undisturbed DLC thin-film surface and an Al2O3 surface exposed by sputtering of the DLC thin film. Changes in the positive mass spectra as a result of heating confirmed that thermal decomposition of the D-4OH lubricant thin-film occurred, and that it was catalytically accelerated by Al2O3 at heating temperatures below 150 degrees C. This observation contrasts with the fact that the D-4OH lubricant thin film on the undisturbed DLC thin-film surface did not decompose.

    蒸気圧が低い合成炭化水素油(MAC)を用い真空中で潤滑試験し,摩擦面で潤滑油が分解して,水素,低分子量の炭化水素が生成することを見出した。摩擦により生成する金属材料新生面の化学活性に着目し,潤滑油の分解に対する新生面の化学的役割について明らかにした。本研究では,軸受鋼AISI 52100を用いて,合成炭化水素油MACを基油として,そのトライボ化学分解に対する各種化合物(窒素,硫黄,リンを含む化合物およびリンを含むイオン液体)の抑制効果を検討し,効果的な化合物を見出した。窒素化合物は分解反応の誘導期間を延ばした。リン化合物は気体生成速度を抑制するとともに,臨界荷重を高くした。リンを含むイオン液体は最も効果的な添加剤であり,気体生成速度の抑制と臨界荷重を著しく高くできることを見出した。摩擦面をマイクロXPSおよびTOF-SIMSで化学分析することにより,これらの添加剤の分解抑制効果は摩擦面に生成した金属塩によるものと推察した。

    Effect of di-tert-dodecyl disulfide as an additive on decomposition of MAC oil on the nascent surface of bearing steel 52100 was investigated. After the removal of surface contamination layer, active sites were generated, on which tribochemical decomposition of MAC oil occurred. The additive prolonged the induction period of the decomposition. Hydrogen and gaseous hydrocarbons desorbed as tribochemical reaction products. Desorption rate of hydrogen and gaseous hydrocarbons increased proportionally with sliding velocity and linearly with the cube root of load. XPS analysis revealed tribochemical reaction between additive and nascent surface occurred, which induced formation of iron sulfide and decrease of activity of nascent surface. As a result, decomposition of MAC oil decreased correspondingly.

    本研究では、急増している電気自動車分野をバックグラウンドとし、電場における潤滑油のトライボロジー特性の解明を目的とした。2021年度に、電場での潤滑油分子挙動の観察を行った。
    本研究では、電場印加されたボールオンディスク小型摩擦試験機を顕微FT-IR装置に取り込んで、その場観察システムを構築し、電場における分子配向と摩擦特性の関係を検討した。オレイン酸を潤滑油とした時に、摺動面に通電すると、C=Oの伸縮振動が高波数へシフトしたことが見られた。それは潤滑油の平面構造(オレイン酸の二量体)が解離されたことを示唆した。潤滑油分子配向が起因となった低摩擦が維持出来なくなったため、通電時の摩擦係数の上昇をもたらす原因が明らかになった。一方、電場印加時添加剤の分子挙動を観察するために、含硫黄環状化合物をトレーサーとして用いた。摺動速度が速くなるにつれ、添加剤が摺動面に濃縮されやすいことが分かった。
    これまでの実験結果に示すように、電場または電流印加すると摩擦係数が上昇したため、摩擦を低減する方法が求められる。そこで、摺動面に潤滑性のあるグラファイトのその場生成を提案した。潤滑油にシクロプロパンカルボン酸(CpCA)を添加した場合、摺動面に通電すると、摺動面にCpCAの開環反応が発生し、潤滑性のあるグラファイトのその場生成を促進したことが見られた。それによって、通電時の摩擦係数が著しく低下していた。さらに、電流増加に伴う、摩擦係数の低減も顕著になった。
    本研究では、真空中に設置する摩擦試験機に質量分析計を取り込み、摩擦面での反応により発生する気体について、質量分析計で成分ごとの圧力変化をモニターすることができた。また、摩擦試験機に電流印加回路を取り組んで、潤滑油の分解に及ぼす電流の影響を観察した。電流の増加に伴い、潤滑油由来の水素発生が多くなったことが分かった。

    本研究では,鋼への水素侵入防止を目標に,DLCコーティングの効果を検討した.安定同位体を利用し,ToF-SIMSを用いて,潤滑油の分解で生成した水素の鋼への侵入過程を可視化したとともに侵入量を定量化した.軸受軌道盤にDLCをコーティングし,摩擦疲労実験を行った結果,水素の侵入量が大幅に減少したことが分かった.DLCの水素侵入抑制効果の有効性が確認できた.DLCは低摩擦熱による潤滑油の熱分解を抑制できたとともに,トライボ化学分解も大幅に抑制したと考えられる.本研究で得られた成果を用い,産業界で課題とされる水素脆化型の早期転動疲労剥離の問題解決が可能となり,燃費向上や省エネルギーにつながる.

    本研究では、トライボ反応膜の摩擦特性と構造を対比しながら反応膜の低摩擦・耐摩耗性のメカニズムを解明することを目的とした。構築した高感度摩擦試験機を用い、添加剤由来の反応膜の摩擦特性を評価した。反応膜自身の摩擦特性は表面形状に関わらず、膜の化学構造に依存することが分かった。反応膜の成長速度は最初段階で速く、その後徐々に遅くなることが見られた。反応膜の成長に伴い、摩擦係数が減少した傾向が見出された。このような反応膜をスラスト玉軸受の軌道面に形成させ、摩擦係数は反応膜がない場合と比べ、約50%減少したことが分かった。
