Raphaël Lambert has been living in Japan for over twenty years. He resides in Kyoto and teaches African American literature and culture in the Department of American and British Cultural Studies at Kansai University in Osaka. His essays have appeared in the Journal of Modern Literature, Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction, and African American Review. In recent years, he co-authored a chapter titled “Ralph Ellison and African American Literature in Post-World War II Japan: Making Blackness Visible,” which is included in Global Ralph Ellison: Aesthetics and Politics Beyond US Borders (Peter Lang 2021). He also published “Translating Diversity from Ralph Ellison to Kenzaburō Ōe” in CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture (2023) and co-edited The African American Novel in the Early Twenty-First Century (Brill 2024). Additionally, he has written two monographs: Narrating the Slave Trade, Theorizing Community (Brill 2019) and Black Hopes/Black Woes: Early African American Optimism and Twenty-first Century Afro-pessimism (Routledge, 2025). His latest essay, “The Allmuseri God in Charles Johnson’s Middle Passage,” was published in Arizona Quarterly in 2025.
