    Abstract

The following paper highlights the way in which contemporary analytic or Anglo-American aesthetics neglects the topic of aesthetic experience. The paper briefly examines the historical background to this situation. It also looks at how analytic aesthetics’ preoccupation with the topic of art is largely responsible for this neglect. It concludes by arguing that most of the fundamental problems in aesthetics, including those that contemporary analytic aesthetics does concern itself with, must remain intractable without a better understanding of aesthetic experience per se.

In 2023 a collection of a selection of the papers from the conference '(Im)Perfectionist Aesthetics' held at Kansai University in 2020, supplemented by newly commissioned papers on the same topic was published by Routledge with the title 'Imperfectionist Aesthetics in Art and Everyday Life' (ISBN 9781032170091), it was edited by Peter Cheyne. The book contains 27 contributions by different scholars. The book presents interdisciplinary research on the aesthetics of perfection and imperfection. Broadening this growing field, it connects the aesthetics of imperfection with issues in areas including philosophy, music, literature, urban environment, architecture, art theory, and cultural studies. It is intended to appeal to a broad range of scholars and advanced students working in philosophical aesthetics, literature, music, urban environment, architecture, art theory, and cultural studies. Since the publication of the book the team has been preparing a Japanese translation of the work to be published by the University of Tokyo Press.
