    This paper investigates the learnability of an equilibrium with private information. Agents of each type have their own private information about an exogenous variable and conduct adaptive learning with a heterogeneously misspecified perceived laws of motion (PLM) that includes only this variable. The paper shows that the existence of private information has a nonnegative impact on the learnability of the equilibrium; that is, the condition for learnability is unaffected or relaxed by heterogeneity and/or misspecification in PLMs caused by private information. In a New Keynesian model with private information about fundamental shocks, the learnability of the equilibrium is ensured by the Taylor principle of monetary policy. The paper also confirms that these results hold true not only in the presence of private information, but also in a variety of informational structures. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    This paper investigates whether inefficient herd behavior of Japanese financial institutions in the domestic loan market affected the real economy during the period between 1975 and 1999. By using Japanese loan data, arranged by geographical area, we show that loans stemming from inefficient herd behavior of Japanese financial institutions tended to have destabilizing effects on the GDP and land prices in the following years, while ordinary loans of those financial institutions had a more positive impact. Our results indicate that the deterioration of the real economy in the 1990s may have been attributable partly to the inefficient herd behavior in the Japanese loan market during the period of the economic bubble in the late 1980s.     This paper investigates whether Japanese banks followed herd behaviour during the 1980s and 1990s. The results indicate the existence of herding during the sample period, while the inefficiency of herding is concentrated in the early to mid 1980s, the period immediately after financial deregulation began. Evidence for the inefficient herding is observed in the behaviour of banks that made loans to new borrowers, and in the behaviour of banks that followed the type of banks that were more informed on lending to new borrowers. On the other hand, inefficient herd behaviour is rarely observed in the 1990s.

    This paper examines whether or not herd behavior exists between different types of Japanese banks. Using data of loans outstanding by bank type from 1980 to 2000, we investigate statistical causality between loans from different types of banks in Japan. The results manifest significant causality from city banks to regional banks, from long-term credit banks to city banks, and from trust banks to city banks. Consistent with historical events in Japan, these relationships have been particularly strong for loans to emerging industries and for loans in the 1980s. We also conducted analysis to clarify possible causes of the detected herding. Among different stories behind herd behavior, the results are most consistent with the behavior based on reference from another type of bank. The results between long-term credit banks and city banks are also consistent with the "Cowbell"-like effect.

    This paper investigates whether Japanese banks had been following herd behavior in the domestic loan market from 1975 through 2000. Applying the technique developed by Lakonishok, Shleifer, and Vishny [Lakonishok, J., Shleifer, A., Vishny, R.V., 1992. The impact of institutional trading on stock prices, J. Finan. Econ. 32, 23-43] to the data from loans outstanding to different types of borrowers, we obtain evidence indicative of the existence of herding. City banks in Japan had been following a cyclical pattern of herding with one of the peaks around the bubble period in the late 1980s. Adjusting further for herding resulting from rational behavior, evidence indicative of the existence of irrational herding was observed only in the bubble period. Our estimate indicates that a total of some 5 trillion yen of loan increase by city banks during the period of 1987-1989 can be attributed to irrational herd behavior. The results imply that irrational bank behavior in the late 1980s might have contributed to the problems Japanese banks had with non-performing loans. We also obtained evidence for herding among regional banks and among geographically proximate banks. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

    生命保険、損害保険会社は、日本の貸出市場において長期資金の重要な資金供給者として存在している。本研究は、1970年代から1990年代の『有価証券報告書』の各企業の金融機関別借入金データを用いて、生命保険、損害保険会社の貸出業務において横並び行動が存在したかどうかを実証的に明らかにしている。その結果、２つの特徴が明らかになった。第１に、経済規模の大きい地域では、1980年代半ばから1990年代半ばにかけて生保と銀行部門との間に横並び行動が観察された。これは、金融機関の横並び行動が1980年代後半以降のバブル経済の生成・崩壊を増幅させた可能性を示唆している。第2に、経済規模の小さい地域では、生保のみならず損保と銀行部門の間に恒常的に横並び行動が観察された。

Devising educational methods

  • 　大学生の教育では、学生の自発的な研究意欲および物事に対する論理的な理解カを引き上げることを目標としている。また、大学生活およびその後の社会生活において必要な「読み、書き、表現」という技術的な能力を引き上げることを心がけている。 　具体的な方法として、講義・ゼミでは、経済理論に重点を置いたテキストを選択し、学生に勉強させている。その中で、物事を客観的に理解することの重要性を説いている。しかし、現代の大学生はとかく理論的・数学的理解を嫌う。そこで、講義内容を平易に理解できる資料をインターネット上で公開し、予習・復習をおこないやすい環境を整えている。また各講義・ゼミでは、成績優秀者を表彰し、受講生の学習意欲を高めている。 　学生の意見交換能力を鍛える方法としては、たとえばゼミでは、先輩・後輩ゼミ生の合間ゼミをおこない、上下関係の中で互いに議論を戦わせている。また、身につけた知識を実践する機会として、学内の経商合同ゼミナール大会、学生懸賞論文の執筆・投稿、日本学生経済ゼミナール、「日経ストックリーグ」(日本経済新開社主催)などに挑戦している。

Teaching materials

  • 　大学生向けのテキストとしては、内田滋・西脇廣治編『金融』勁草書房、2002年がある。その他、講義用の教材として、インターネット上に講義資料を公開している。

Teaching method presentations

  • 　現在のところ、教育方法等ついて発表・講演を行っていない。しかし、今後、積極的におこなっていきたいと考えている。

Special notes on other educational activities

  • 　中川ゼミナールの活動実績として、日本学生経済ゼミナール関西ブロック大会において、2008年に優勝、2010年に3位入賞した。学内の経商合同ゼミナール大会において、2009年に4位入賞した。また、2009年度以降、財団法人石井記念証券研究振興財団より研究助成を受けている。
