A single-degree-of-freedom bilinear system has a simple similarity relation between the input and output motion; a simultaneous amplification of the input motion, the elastic limit, and the yield force by a certain factor induces an amplification of the response by just the same factor. The purpose of this study is to estimate the energy response characteristics of a bilinear system efficiently by utilizing this similarity relation. The input ground motion is given by a stationary random process with a power spectral density function corresponding to a "pseudo-acceleration" spectral density of an adapted single-degree-of-freedom system under a white noise excitation, The energy response problem for the bilinear system under the stochastic excitation is formulated and simplified by use of the similarity relation. Numerical results clarify the relations between the characteristics of the input ground motion and the non-linear energy response.

In this paper, a simple method is proposed to estimate amplification characteristics of anti-plane shear waves in two-dimensional alluvial valleys. The eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes of two-dimensional alluvial valleys are estimated by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. In order to make a quantitative analysis of the amplification characteristics, the modal analysis method is employed with the equivalent modal damping parameters representing the energy dissipation to the surrounding bedrock. The results of some numerical examinations show the efficiency and applicability of the presented method to approximately estimate the amplification characteristics of various shaped alluvial valleys.

A new analytical method is presented to compute the seismic response of three-dimensional alluvial valleys. In generalized coordinates along the boundary shape of a three-dimensional alluvial valley, wave field equations and boundary conditions are formulated as a two-point boundary value problem for linear first-order ordinary differential equations. The Riccati method is applied to solve the problem. The numerical results show the validity of the presented method. Complicated amplification patterns in a frequency-space domain induced in alluvial valleys are simply explained by interference phenomena among the direct wave and the surface waves generated on valley edges.

The linear and non-linear responses of surface soil layers have been predicted through the simultaneous simulation test against the observed ground motions at the six sites in Kobe City during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake. The total stress analysis method and the effective stress analysis method have been applied for the rough and detailed verification of the predicted non-linear dynamic behavior at the PIS and RKI sites including the liquefaction phenomenon. The shear strain distribution along depth, the ratio of excess pore water pressure to initial effective stress, the liquefaction strength parameters to initial effective stress, and the stress-strain curve during the earthquake at the PIS site have been investigated when the predicted ground motion could simulate successfully the observed acceleration time histories and response spectra in the non-linear range. This paper develops an analytical approach to estimating an overall seismic reliability or hazardness of structures based on earthquake excitation model predicted for Osaka city area. Nonwhite random process is used for reliability analysis, while bi-linear and peak-oriented hysteretic characteristics are used for steel and reinforced concrete building structures. These characteristics are replaced with equivalent linear models for the estimation convenience. Numerical examples are given to an overall seismic reliability or hazardness of building structures in Osaka city area.

The purpose of this article is to further investigate the influence of local site conditions of surface soil layers on seismic ground motion by studying the response of a semi-spherical alluvial deposit model under the more realistic type incident wave field. The incident wave field is a spherical wave radiated from a point source that is situated at the near focal distance and the far focal distance. A plane SH wavelet is also considered for comparison. A least-squares technique is applied to solve the boundary problem. The surface displacements on the alluvial deposit and in the elastic half-space are evaluated for various focal distances and source incidence angles. The numerical results indicate that there are significant differences concerning scattering and diffraction of wave motions between the two horizontal components when the semi-spherical alluvial deposit is subjected to incident wave motions from a point source. In the near field and for the component involving predominantly P and SV waves, the coupling of these waves induces a great variation in the spatial distributions, the amplitudes, and the time histories of the surface displacements compared to the tangential component, which involves mostly SH waves. The wave propagation characteristics of this component are very similar to those for a plane SH wavelet. In the far field and for the tangential component, there is not such strong coupling among waves. It is also shown that the first reflected waves at the curved boundary are deeply related to scattering and to diffraction of wave motion in a surface soil layer with irregularities and play an important role in the development of later arrivals.

The purpose of this study is to develop a new regression model for the power spectral density function(PSDF) and the effective duration of input ground motions. The PSDF is expressed as that of the pseudo-acceleration response of a single-degree-freedom system under a white noise excitation. The regression analysis for the model parameters of the PSDF and the duration are carried out by using the genetic algorithm and the maximum likelihood method. Then, the effectiveness of the obtained regression model are investigated and demonstrated in various applications.

The summaries of this title of project are as follows :
    (1) A database has been build from the strong ground motion seismograms recorded at Kansai University. The database is used to investigate the structural response characteristics of several types of real buildings such as a steel building, a reinforced concrete building, and a base-isolated building. For reasonable response estimation of base-isolated buildings under excitation of long-period ground motion with long duration but small amplitude, it is shown to be necessary to consider the hysteretic characteristics in small deformations of the base isolation system.
    (2) A new simple model for power spectral density function (PSDF) of ground acceleration is proposed to improve the conventional models in the ability of expressing their low-frequency spectral components. The attenuation relation for the new PSDF model is derived through regression analysis. Based on the attenuation model, earthquake input energy for building structures is estimated as a function with respect to magnitude, hypocentral distance, and Vs30 of surface soil layers.
    (3) It is clarified that the relationship between the stiffness calculated from the wall quantity and the total stiffness of 2D wooden framed houses, Nagaya. Based on the maximum velocity values of earthquake motions and damage levels, it is concluded that the stiffness of the houses must be 4 to 6 times greater than the stiffness calculated by the wall quantity based on certain criteria ; i.e. the stiffness factor λ=4-6.
(4)The effect of wall quantity variation of the orthogonal direction on the vibration control is examined. It is found that the displacement and the acceleration responses of the Nagaya single model are larger than that of the quadric one, therefore pulling down of Nagaya consisted of several houses leads to the bad amenity during earthquake. When the wall quantity of the models has one and half times as much as the other eccentric direction one, torsional vibration would be rarely caused.

    (1) Structural responses of base isolated buildings and high-rise buildings were predicted on the basis of the ground motion models for the next four great events in Japan: the Minami Kanto Earthquake, the Tokai Earthquake, the Nobi Earthquake and the Yamasaki Earthquake. The prediction results indicate that the ground motion and building structural response are mainly described by the focal distance, geometric relation between site and source, site geological structure, asperity strength and distribution on the fault plane, and source directivity effect.
    (2) The ground motions in various shapes of alluvial valleys were computed by using a new hybrid method of Riccati equation approach for the wave field inside the basin and the direct BEM for the rest. And we introduced and defined an equivalent flat layer model. The thickness of the surface flat layer was determined so that the theoretical dispersion curve of the surface wave in the flat layer fitted best the one in the alluvial valley. An examination of various cases indicates that complicated amplification patterns induced in alluvial valleys are simply and essentially explained by interference phenomena among the direct wave and the surface waves generated on the valley edges with phase velocities evaluated from the equivalent flat layer model.
    (3) We developed an analytical approach to estimating an overall seismic reliability or hazardness of structures based on the earthquake excitation model predicted for Osaka city area. And some numerical examples were given to am overall seismic reliability or hazardness of steel and reinforced concrete building structures in Osaka city area. Furthermore, in order to examine the applicability or validity of the developed seismic reliability analysis, a comparison was made between the analytical reliability and the damage magnitude for the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake.

The research results of this project title are summarized as follows:
    1. Strong ground motion and ground condition characteristics were estimated based on the recorded accelerograms on the rock site of the Osaka northern area
    2. Strong ground motions on the surface were generated for SH waves using the stochastic amplification technique
    3. Ground motions for SH wave were estimated introducing the Riccati method to the seismic response analysis of alluvial valley with irregular boundaries
    4. The random input ground motion models were shown using the parameters, which prescribe the non-stationary processes on the basis of the recorded ground motions
    5. The reiationship between the restoring force models and earthquake damage modes of wooden houses was examined using the typicai recorded strong ground motions.
    6. Earthquake response characteristics were shown of wooden-framed houses with the restoring force characteristics having both hysteretic and slip types and with the non-linear rotational springs at the top and the bottom of the columns
    7. The relationship between the horizontal stiffiless on the basis of the wall-ratio of the wooden house and the stifihess of the non-structural factor was made clear, and the total stiffiless ofthe house couid be estimated
    8. Optimum seismic response control of structural systems was, estimated in case of the Maxwell-type non-linear viscous damper. It have been recognized that this system will be able to be applied to wooden houses
    9. The wall arrangement affects the torsional oscillation of wooden houses. The fundamental data couid be gotten on the good wall arrange and the design to control the tosional oscillation
    10. It is shown that the earthquake damage will be able to be predicted from the earthquake response analysis results of wooden houses for the various levels ofthe input ground motions

(1)Seismic source parameters reflecting the regional seismic activity were extracted from the regression analysis of seismograms recorded at Kansai University campus. Using these parameters, ground motions of hypothetical strong earthquakes in Kansai area were estimated by the weighted superposition of shorter period ground motion models generated by the stochastic method.
(2)Seismic ground motions were synthesized from source functions expressed as the stochastic process reflecting local inhomogeneity on the fault plane and the Green's functions. For validation, the simulation tests were carried out against the Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake.
(3)The relationship between the rupture propagation on the fault plane and the directivity effect was investigated through the analysis of the isochron. The non-stationary spectrum of ground motion model was expressed as the product of two kinds of spectra : one is a wave function given by the integral of the slip along the isochron and the other is a slip time function expressed by the stochastic process.
(4)Damage probability of wooden houses in the Nagata-ku during the Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake was estimated based on the yielding seismic coefficients and the engineering seismic coefficients calculated on the dynamic response analysis. For validation, the estimation was compared with the damage ratio given by the field survey.
(5)From two viewpoints of preservation of seismic safety and improvement of comfortability, the optimum parameters of the damper attached to the structural system were determined based on the random response analysis. The efficiency of the optimum damper was examined through the simulation analysis using the recorded seismograms.
(6)The dynamic stability of base-isolated structures excited by horizontal plus vertical ground motions was examined based on the axial force response of the base isolation story.
