    This paper discusses the effect of pre-grouping on vector classification based on the self-organizing map (SOM). The SOM is an unsupervised learning neural network, and is used to form clusters of vectors using its topology preserving nature. The use of SOMs for practical applications, however, may pose difficulties in achieving high recognition accuracy. For example, in image recognition, the accuracy is degraded due to the variation of lighting conditions. This paper considers the effect of pre-grouping of feature vectors on such types of applications. The proposed pre-grouping functionality is also based on the SOM and introduced into a new parallel configuration of the previously proposed SOM-Hebb classifers. The overall system is implemented and applied to position identification from images obtained in indoor and outdoor settings. The system first performs the grouping of images according to the rough representation of the brightness profile of images, and then assigns each SOM-Hebb classifier in the parallel configuration to one of the groups. Recognition parameters of each classifier are tuned for the vectors belonging to its group. Comparison between the recognition systems with and without the grouping shows that the grouping can improve recognition accuracy.

    An FPGA-based hardware hand sign recognition system was proposed in our previous work. The hand sign recognition system consisted of a preprocessing and a self-organizing map (SOM)-Hebb clas- sifier. The training of the SOM-Hebb classifier was carried out by an off-chip computer using training vectors given by the system. The recog- nition performance was reportedly improved by adding perturbation to the training data. The perturbation was added manually during the process of image capture. This paper proposes a new off-chip training method with automatic performance improvement. To improve the system's recognition performance, the off-chip training system adds artificially generated pertur- bation to the training feature vectors. Advantage of the proposed method compared to additive scale perturbation to image is its low computational cost because the number of feature vector elements is much less than that of pixels contained in image. The feasibility of the proposed off-chip training was tested in simulations and experiments using American sign language (ASL). Simulation results showed that the proposed perturbation compu- tation alters the feature vector so that it is same as the one obtained by a scaled image. Experimental results revealed that the proposed off-chip training improved the recognition accuracy from 78.9% to 94.3%.

    This paper discusses effect of grouping on vector classifiers that are based on self-organising map (SOM).     A real-time dynamic hand gesture recognition system with gesture spotting is discussed in this paper. The gesture spotting detects the start and the end of the gesture frames. The system consists of preprocessing, posture sequence generation, and SOM-Hebb network. Feature vectors are computed by the preprocessing from video frames taken by a USB camera in real time, and these feature vectors are fed to the posture sequence generation and a vector that represents the sequence of postures, called a posture sequence vector, is generated. Then, gesture classification and the gesture spotting are performed in the SOM-Hebb network. Our gesture spotting function detects the end of the gesture by using vector distance between the posture sequence vector and the winner neuron's weight vector. The gesture recognition algorithm is implemented on a PC. A USB camera was used to acquire live images. The real time experimental results show that the system recognizes nine gestures with the accuracy of 96.22%.

    Spatiotemporal chaos in a multidomain regime in a Gunn-effect device is numerically investigated as an example of collective domain oscillations under global constraints. The dynamics of carrier densities are computed using a set of model partial differential equations. Numerical results reveal some distinctive and chaotic clustering features caused by the global coupling and boundary effects. The chaotic regime is then characterized in terms of a Lyapunov spectrum and Lyapunov dimension, the latter increasing with the size of the system.

    In this paper, we propose a new method of information retrieval which combines adaptive and incremental query expansion with cluster-based browsing. The proposed method attempts to accurately learn users' interests from their relevance judgments on clustered search results instead of individual documents, reducing users' loads for the judgments. The use of adaptive relevance feedback leads to the capability for tracking vague or dynamically shifting goals of users. Incrementally expanded and refined queries can be used in re-searching to improve the retrieval effectiveness. We apply the proposed method to the information retrieval on the World Wide Web and demonstrate its effectiveness through basic experiments.

    A numerical method is proposed for efficiently locating fold bifurcation points of periodic orbits of high-dimensional differential-equation systems. This method is an extension of the subspace shooting method (or the Newton-Picard shooting method) that locates periodic orbits by combining the conventional shooting method and the brute-force method. Fold bifurcation points are located by combining a variant of the subspace shooting method with a fixed parameter value and the secant method for searching the parameter value of the bifurcation point. The target in the subspace-shooting part is an (not necessarily periodic) orbit represented by a Poincare mapping point which is close to the center manifold and satisfies the eigenvalue condition for the bifurcation. The secant-search part finds the parameter value where this orbit becomes periodic. Avoiding the need for differentiating the Poincare map with respect to the bifurcation parameter and exploiting several properties of the center manifold, the proposed method is both robust and easy to implement.

    This paper describes a method of increasing the effectiveness of browsing by clustering large numbers of information retrieval results, and discusses the implementation of adaptive document clustering. In the proposed method, query information is successively expanded and refined in the course of browsing, and it is utilized as a clustering viewpoint that expresses the interests of the user. The proposed method is experimentally evaluated in an application to WWW information retrieval and its effectiveness is demonstrated. © 2001 Scripta Technica.

Devising educational methods

  • ・「回路システム理論」などの担当講義科目で取り上げる様々な技術的手法について、それらの発想や歴史的事情の検討も含めた教材研究を十分に行った上で、内容をできるだけ現代的かつシステマティックに再構成するとともに、その過程(なぜそのように再構成したか)も説明しながら講義している。 ・講義中の問題演習や実験科目においては、学生間の議論を奨励するとともに、その流れの中で適切な助言を行うよう努めている。 ・過去の試験問題を略解、評価基準および成績結果とともに公表しながら、年度ごとに適切に変化させた出題を心がけることで、講義内容の深い理解につながる自主演習を誘導している。 ・当該科目のカリキュラム上の位置付け,関連科目や上位・下位年次科目の授業内容、資格試験の問題や高等学校の学習指導要領および教科書の記述などに留意して、授業内容に反映させるとともに、何に留意したかをその都度説明している。 ・研究室で独自の観点に基づいて開発した学習支援Webシステムを、担当講義の一部において実験的に使用しながら、学習意欲の刺激を試みるとともに、学習行動の分析を行っている。
